why do safety certified flashlights require vacuum bulbs? i have a bright star 2217 permissible flashlight. it is designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres such as coal mines, grain silos, below deck on a boat. printed on the tube it states that you must only use a PR2 or PR6 bulb. i know that those are vacuum, flange based bulbs designed to run off the current of 2 D sized batteries. my question is what would make a krypton or xenon filled bulbs potentially dangerous? i 've always wondered that so could someone explain it to me. No such thing as a vacuum filed bulb. They are filled with nitrogen or argon or some other inert gas.
krypton or xenon bulbs get a lot hotter on the outside surface than does a normal incandescent bulb.

Xenon Flashlight vs. Halogen Flashlight? I'm currently comparing work flashlights. I need to light up large areas and see long distances. I narrowed it down to a streamlight and now need some more info that I can't find. The UltraStinger has a Xenon bulb with 75,000 candlepower, which is exatcly what I am looking for, but I read that the bulb only lasts 30 hours. I know that the halogen bulbs last much longer, but the highest CP I can find is 40,000 for the halogen. Does anyone know if the Xenon bulbs last longer than I read? Another thing to consider is that the xenon emits a true white light even though the bulb looks blue. This will give you a clearer image when you are useing the light to see with over the halogen.

Average battery life of a xenon bulb incandescent flashlight? Like with Alkaline batteries or something? This will depend (of course) on which xenon bulb it is and what size cells.
The Rayovac Xenon bulb for two D cells draws 0.8 amps.
D cell batteries have a capacity of around 14 amp-hours at a 20 hour rate which coincidentally comes very close to the 0.8 amp discharge rate so I wouldnt worry about correcting for the discharge rate. I'm also not going to worry about the variation in current with varying supply voltage (comment to the purists. Lets keep it simple)
14 amp-hours Divided by 0.8 amps = 17.5 hours.
Alkaline batteries will have a slowly decreasing output voltage as they are discharged. The light will be very bright at first and get dimmer as the batteries wear down. It could easily be that at 12 or 15 hours the light is not bright enough to suit you.

LED, Xenon, HID, Halogen Flashlight bulb COMPARISON? What's the different between LED, Xenon, HID, and Halogen in Lumens, efficiency, power consumption.. Its hard to compare the three since different bulbs and "number" of bulbs differ in their output. LED bulbs -- single -- has the lowest output that's why you usually see 25 of them at a time on a flashlight.
Standard small halogens bulbs produce around 350-400 lumens.
Xenon and HID are the same thing, Xenon is the gas inside of the HID bulb and has the most lumens. If you are looking at 400 lumens you want to stay away from HID. HID produces around 3000 lumens.
First Reference is the output of a HID bulbs, the 2nd reference is only for 55W Halogens but you can see the difference in lumens and candles.

Can someone please explain the difference between Xenon and LED flashlights? I would like to know how much of what color light is emited by each. I would also like to know which is beter to mount as a tactical light. I cant quote you the color temperature of each (degrees Kelvin), But xenon is a traditional style filament ctually lamp), but the atmosphere inside the glass envelope (the bulb) is filled with xenon, an intert noble gas. Electricity passing through the filament makes it glow brightly in the xenon charged atmosphere. They require and consume more current, so the batteries wont last as long, but the light is extremely bright and of a high color temperature. the blinding brightness makes it ideal as a tac light.
LED is a light emitting diode and has no filiament to burn out or break. the LED is very durable, and withstands vibration, dropping etc much better. the technology has improved a lot and LEDs are much brighter than they were even 3 years ago. They consume very little current, so batteries last a very long time (i have an LED head lamp for hunting/camping, and on low i get 50 hours of use from 3 AAA batteries). The color temp will vary by mfg, but hey are generally a cooler color, sometimes almost appearing pale blue. I have found that most LED lamps use some form of magifiying lens to condense the beam, making it appear brighter.
I use LED's in my flashlights, but for overall brightness and intermittent use, the Xenon is a better choice.Check the lumen output, it should be over 200 for either.This isnt your off the walmart shelf light.

Question about xenon flash light bulbs? I purchased a Xenon flashlight bulb, it has ratings of 3.6VDC, 800mA and 3.0 MSCP and 36 hours life. What is the maximum voltage from batteries i can run through without burning out this lamp. I was hoping that i can build something like this: http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/581888/10_police_flashlight_hack.swf I will be surprised if someone actually comes up with an accurate answer for you but even if you simply try different voltages and lose a few bulbs along the way you surely won't come any where near $95.00 but I will tel you that if you try to run 9 volts through the 3.6 volt bulb there is no doubt that it will light very bright but definetly won't last the estimated 36 hours, but why not try to see if it last good enough for you.
but beware of the lens on your flashlight melting like the plastic it is.

Is there any possible way to focus a Mini Maglite 2 Cell flashlight further? I have a Mini Maglite 2 Cell Xenon flashlight and am wondering if I can perhaps focus it further some way. Thanks! it is what it is. buy a bigger lumens light
