FAQ about Wind Up Flashlights

If they can make wind-up flashlights why dont they make wind-up cars? i saw this humancar.com and it seems like wind-up technology? Ill get one if you come to my garage and wind it up every morning

Which type of LED flashlight is better? Shaking, Crank, Wind-Up, or Traditional battery ones? I just tried to turn on my traditional flashlight and it doesn't work. I know it must be that the battery died. It's the big batteries and those are expensive. So, I'm looking to get a new flashlight, an LED one. My friend has those Wind-up ones where you can pull out a lever and just turn for like a minute and it'll work for 30 minutes. My other friend has those Crank ones where there's a piece that budges out on the side and you just press it a couple of times. Then when I looked on google, there are shaking ones. I'd like to know from your experience which one works the best, and most efficient. I looked on eBay and there are all about $6 a piece, and well, if I have to buy new batteries for a similar price, might as well get a new one. Thanks in advance for your input! I have never had good luck with the kind you shake. They work for a bit and then stop. I prefer the wind-up kind. They're much more reliable.
I mostly use the battery kind, but the wind-up ones are great. You just store them and they're there when you need them. No worry about batteries going dead or leaking.

How can i make a wind up torch/flashlight? i need to make an electricity efficient torchlight so i decided im going to make one that is wind up please tell how i can make it and if possible suggest a store from which i could buy it i live in south africa and i have tried calling most big name stores to en quire about it but all of them have said that they do not stock it I don't know where you can buy one where you live, but I can tell you a little about how they work, and maybe you can make one.
The generator in a wind-up handheld flashlight is like a small motor with a lot of gears attached to it. The crank lets you turn the gears, which spins the motor at high speed. Sometimes a small battery or capacitor is added to the output of the motor so that there is light for a little longer than just when you're cranking it.
You could use a cheap cordless drill as a source for the motor and gears- they're already attached to each other, and in the "low" speed mode, there should be quite a large gear ratio.
Another version I once had included a small flywheel on the motor, and a method to let the motor and flywheel keep spinning after you stopped with your hand power. It would only go for a second, but it was enough to make the light more even while you were using it.
If you make your own, the hard part will be figuring out what your output voltage is, and finding a type of light bulb that will both be bright enough and won't burn out all the time.

What kind of stuff should go into a survival/emergency kit? A wind-up flashlight. Wind-up radio. What else? The contents of any kit will depend on where you are and where you plan on going. Also the time of year can affect the items you may want to have with you.
If you want food in the kit then don't waste space with stuff like Bouillon cubes. They have 0 calories and will do nothing for you at all. Energy bars are far better and can provide enough calories to keep you going all day.
Wind up stuff is nice but even they can go bad. I have a wind up flashlight that I've had for four years. I wound it up the other day for five minutes and the light lasted ten or fifteen seconds. Plan on replacing them every year or two. It does little good to have something that won't work when you need it.
Most little multi-tools are junk. Spend the money and get a good one. If your life may depend on it then don't skimp.
Water is more important than food but it weighs a ton. I suggest getting at least one of those filter straws now on the market.
The most important thing to take is not in your kit. It's in your head. Use your brains.

How do these flashlights work? No batteries, just wind up.? What do they have inside that winding them up charges? I would take mine apart to find out, but it was kind of expensive. I believe it uses an electromagnet which through a circuit charges a big capacitor. Shaking the flashlight makes the magnet go in and out of the coil creating a voltage. The charge on the capacitor is large enough to power an LED flashlight for a given time. That's my guess.

Super LED Wind Up Micro Dynamo LED Torch Flashlight? Do you know someone who sells this product in Australia? "http://astore.amazon.co.uk/cuteseller-21/detail/B000ON50EO" I really want this! However, they are British company and don't send it to Australia. Acutally it's seen at "http://www.amazon.co.uk/SuperLED-Micro-Dynamo-Torch-Flashlight/dp/B000ON50EO/ref=sr_1_14/203-6015753-4101563?ie=UTF8&s=diytools&qid=1183701967&sr=1-14". It must be this product! sorry I am stunborn. I am not sur if you can get this particular product but I do know you can get wind up LED torches from Kmart and big W.
I know because I have one in my power out emergency kit, Bought it only 3 months ago.
They work real well.

What is the technology behind wind-up flashlights? How do they work? How does the winding action charge the battery or mechanism inside to allow the light to illuminate? The winding spins a small generator that recharges a tiny battery.
Nothing outlandish here...

Are Wind-up Flashlights Dangerous? I have a wind-up flashlight with 3 led's, and saw a video on youtube that showed how you can make it so that it charges a iPod. I have everything necessary, and all i have to do is solder on two little wires to the generator, but my dad insists that this is too dangerous. He says that the little capacitors are too much of a risk to work with, even though i would not be soldering anywhere close to them, besides, they do not store the energy to power a flash or anything. My question is simply, do wind-up flashlights pose any risk? I keep saying that a flashlight is not dangerous at all, and can not kill me, but my dad thinks otherwise. Thank you to all who answer.

PWM? Has anyone developed the technology for a personal windmill to power one's house? If not that, then how about a personal windlass (like the wind up radios and flashlights) to generate enough electricty to power one's house? If so, I want one. Look in the Grizzly tool catalog. There are several wind mills for producing electricity, some pretty powerful.
Contrary to popular belief the power company does NOT "have" to buy the excess power back. In fact, they almost stopped the wind farm going on in the "Thumb" of Northeastern Michigan.
Over four hundred windmills are going in for a savings of 25% to all people here.

What is the official name for electricity cranks? i think they're in those little wind up LED flashlights. If you wind the handle, it will create electricity

Now I m convinced Doovy s photos around Huayna Potosi, Bolivia A TripAdvisor TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Huayna Potosi, Bolivia by TravelPod blogger Doovy titled Now I m convinced . TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor . Doovy s travel blog entry: Like Ecuador, Bolivia features a number of high mountains that are relatively easily climbed. I felt that in contrast to Ecuador, I had aclimatized to the altitude. At this point I have spent nearly 2 months at altitudes of 3000 m or higher, with a number of forays into the 4 5000 m range. More importantly, I haven t experienced the horrible sickness I previously did when up high. So if there was ever a time to give it another shot, this was it. Huayna Potosi is the most popular of these easy mountains as it is easily accessed within in an hour of La Paz. It also exceeds the 6000 m (6088 m) threshold that many people covet. There are lots of agencies in La Paz that offer trips of 2 4 days to reach the summit. After some research I decided on the agency that seemed to be the best safety wise. The man who owns it is a doctor specializing in high altitude medicine and I was asked lots of questions about my aclimitization and experience. Contrasted with others who were staffed with people who only asked your name and the date you wanted to climb. I elected for the 3 day trip which consisted of 1 day of glacier training with a night at a refugio at 4700 m, followed the next day by a short walk to the high camp refugio at 5200 m, and finally a summit attempt on the morning of

1 of 3, Winter Sense Backpacking in the Snow by Nutnfancy Cue the heavy snow. Now cue the wind. More wind, more snow. Now that s perfect. Time to take the scouts out on a backpacking trip in the snow. Welcome to Winter Sense, a short but fairly hardcore snow adventure that gives an inside look on my work with a youth group. I have been doing this for years but this is the first time I ve shown it within TNP. Launching from a beautiful, snow driven location, Allie the Mountain Dog and myself head on up a with the boys and another adult leader to teach winter camping techniques to the boys. Hiking in for several miles towing the TNP gear sled, we bivouac in six feet of powder snow and set up camp. And don t believe the bravado from this group they are total backcountry rookies! But the driving snow and plummeting temperatures are good attention getters when darkness falls. That motivation provides me with an attentive audience as I teach the realities of serious snow camping, fire craft, gear selection, shelter considerations, calorie expenditure, and survival priorities. I don t claim all expertise on survival knowledge but I ve been using my methods for decades and they work and will keep you safe and comfortable. Come on along for another frigid and snow adventure. Oh by the way, I was sick too! //////////////////Music licensed to TNP from Jason Shaw.
