can an ultralight (the aircraft) run on a weed wacker engine? i am planning on building my first aircraft and i am wondering if a weed wacker engine (running on full power) has enough power to lift an ultra light aircraft off the ground. i'm planning on using mainly wood to construct the aircraft, and sheet plastic to cover the wings, so it should be pretty light. and its only going to carry one person (me) will it take off? if not, how about on an incline? if not, what type of engine would it take?

Al was inroduces in aviation in the 60s it took for some reason that i never understtod 20 years for aircraft manufacturers to figure out that Al-Li alloy works much better. Li increases the stiffness and at the same dime reduces density, hence weight!!
however tooking at possible future trends it looks like composites (Ti composites in paritcular) are going to be very common. Look at the new 787 for instance

If I bought an ultralight trike aircraft, are there rules regarding where I can fly it? For example, could I use a park or normal residential street as a runway? Also, how far do you need to fly above the ground and how far away must you fly from large buildings? Is there a website that displays this information Call the FAA, and ask.
And why do you think you could use a street for a runway? If you have to ask stuff like that, it's unlikely you'll ever get approved to own one of these in the first place.

can you build an ultralight aircraft? i am interested in building an ultralight aircraft with no need for fuel, i will use a bike frame and move the chain to a metal fan behind me, add a metal frame to hold toe fan blades (metal fan blades, the ones in factories or sort of like it, or if it may be possible with a ceiling fan) and some wings above me. is this possible, by the way, for thrust, i will move the chain to make the fan spin, so id like to know if this is possible. or if it would be expensive Nope. They also cost over $100,000 to develop and build and required an olympic athlete to fly them.

Populated suburbs and ultralight aircraft help? Lately I have developed a sort of interest in this type of aircraft ever since I learned that the Martin Jetpack will be classified as one. This got me wondering about just where ultralights are allowed to fly. First hearing that you don't need any type of license to pilot one, I thought that there was very little if any regulation over where and how high these could go (of course assuming they stay out of airspace used by airports and such). However, through another question I recently asked, I discovered that "No person may operate an ultralight vehicle over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons". However, the FAA regulations went on to say "No person may operate an ultralight vehicle in prohibited or restricted areas unless that person has permission from the using or controlling agency, as appropriate." So, since this statement is included in the FAA regulations I can only assume there is someway to get around the 1st clause that I quoted. Does anyone know of a way? Are there specific guidelines that describe what constitutes a "congested area" or are ultralights banned from flying over any populated area? Would one contact the FAA to get special permission of some kind if there is no other possible loophole? If permission was obtained, would one be forced to abide by stricter regulations like always keeping the aircraft in a hanger when not in use and filling out time consuming flight logs? The only way you can operate an ultralight over a densely populated area is if you get a "waiver" from the FAA. Generally speaking, only one-time waivers are available for things like special events. Unless you were involved in law enforcement, wildlife work, or something similar they won't give you a waiver for unlimited flights. The only reasonable way around the restriction it is to get the aircraft certified in the experimental category and get a sport pilot or private pilots certificate to fly it that way. That probably won't happen with a jet pack in your lifetime. Another problem is that except for takeoff and landing,you would have to abide by the 1,500 foot minimum altitude restriction over a densely populated area, which means that in many cities with Class B or C airspace you would be required to have a transponder plus communication and navigation equipment that most ultralights and a jet pack certainly couldn't accommodate. If you're seriously thinking "jet pack", you're dreaming. You won't be able to afford it , the maximum flight duration is only a few minutes at best, and the limited performance wouldn't allow you to get to a minimum legal altitude.

This is the U.S. Ultralight Association's home page, I cannot find anywhere on the site a list of ultralight aircraft, but I'm sure it could be of some help. One company I know of for sure is Rans Aircraft, Inc., out of Kansas. Goodluck with your search!

what is the best material to build a ultralight aircraft? i'm building a single seater ultralight aeroplane and I want to know what type material I should use as the frame for it. Birch wood with good glue joints should do the
trick. Use thin plywood gussets at each joint.
Slow setting epoxy probably would be your best
bet for the glue. Use brass or stainless tacks to secure the gussets while the glue is drying.
I have never used it, but Gorilla Glue is supposed to be very strong. Good luck.
