Excerpt: A backpack helicopter is a helicopter motor and rotor and controls assembly that can be strapped to a person's back, so that he can walk about on the ground wearing it, and can use it to fly. Its harness , like a parachute harness, should have a strap between the legs, so that the pilot does not fall out of the harness during flight.Typically a backpack helicopter differs from a conventional helicopter in two ways. Firstly there is no tail rotor, and the main rotors are contra-rotating . Yaw is controlled by fine adjustment of a differential gear in the rotor drive transmission. When one rotor is adjusted to spin slightly faster than the other it induces yaw, or turning motion. Secondly, the rotors are fixed pitch, which assists with simplicity, however this means that in the event of engine failure autorotation is impossible. Usually a Ballistic parachute would be incorporated for safety.Some designs may use ducted fan design to increase upward thrust .Related are devices like a backpack helicopter which also include a seat and leg supports and are actually very small open-topped ordinary helicopters.Several inventors have tried to make backpack helicopters, with mixed results.In theory, a helicopter would be more efficient than a rocket/jet pack , possessing a greater specific impulse , and being more suited to hovering due to the smaller velocities of the propelled gases.Examples A possible design for a helibackpack with counter-rotating twin rotorsPure backpacks With a seat In popular c...$19.91

Trigonometry word problem? Ben flies his ultra-light airplane due east for 100 km. He turns right through an angle of 130 degrees and flies a second leg. Then, he turns right 110 degrees and returns to his starting point.
If you were to draw the airplane's motion (relating to traiangles & trig), how would you do it?
Can you please as best as possible describe how the triangle on a cartesian plane would look like?
Would it look like this http://www.caribbeanedu.com/images/icons/obtuse.gif or like this http://www.nga.gov/education/classroom/new_angles/img/glossary/obtuse_triangle.gif???
Also how do you determine the total length of the flight to the nearest km?
Thank you!!
No, it would not look like an obtuse triangle. It would come close to an equilateral triangle.
The total length can be calculated by first drawing the flight path and figuring out the interior angles of the triangle. After that you have can calculate the 2 unknown legs of the flight path by using the law of sines. You know all the interior angles and the length of one side.
Trig word problem I'm stuck on? Ben flies his ultra-light airplane due east for 100 km. He turns right through an angle of 130 degrees and flies a second leg. Then, he turns right 110 degrees and returns to his starting point.

Also how do you determine the total length of the flight to the nearest km?
Thank you!!
you use the law that the total angles are equal to 180 so the remaining angle is 40
then you use the law
sin(a)/A = sin(b)/B = sin(c)/C
answer: 100 + 68.4 + 81.5 = 249.9 or approx 250km
Trigonometry word problem HELP!? Ben flies his ultra-light airplane due east for 100 km. He turns right through an angle of 130 degrees and flies a second leg. Then, he turns right 110 degrees and returns to his starting point.

Also how do you determine the total length of the flight to the nearest km?
Actually it would not look like either of those. It's an acute triangle.
Think of it this way. If Ben turned 90 degreesyou know what that would look like. If he turns more than 90 degrees (like say, 130) the angle that is formed in his flightpath (triangle) is not 130 degrees. It's 50 degrees. 130 degrees is the angle between the line if he continued going straight and the line of his new path. It's the angle outside that corner. The supplementary angle to the angle INSIDE the triangle. Same thing when he turns 110 degrees. The interior angle is 70 degrees.
So if he starts at A, make the first turn at B and the second turn at C we have a triangle where
B=50 degrees
C=70 degrees
A= 80-70-50 = 60 degrees
We also know that AB=100km
We can use the sine law to get the length of the other sides
AB/sin(C)=BC/sin(A) --> BC=ABsin(A)/sin(C) = 92.16km
and
AB/sin(C)=AC/sin(B) --> AC=ABsin(B)/sin(C) = 81.52km
So total length of the flight is 100+92.16+81.52=273.68 = 274km
Trignometry word problem? Ben flies his ultra-light airplane due east for 100 km. He turns right through an angle of 130 degrees and flies a second leg. Then, he turns right 110 degrees and returns to his starting point.

1. Draw a coordinate system labelling y axis as N-S and x axis as E-W.
2. Then, mark off what you think would be a suitable length on the x axis East to represent 100km.
3. Then at that point draw another coordinate system exactly like what you did in 1 but use the point at 100 km as your origin.
4. Then measure 130 degrees clockwise from the East x axis to see where your next leg would end up.
5. Now, once you've identified a point on this direction,let it be your origin and draw the NSEW axes at that point and start your 110 degree turn from the West x axis to bring you back to the original starting point.
The angle between the starting leg and the returning leg is an obtuse angle and the side opposite it will be the longest leg of the flight.
What material do ultra lights use in there engine mounts? I am trying to mount a rotax 618 on a non airplane aplication. What meterial should i use and should i use round tubbing? Thanks. Titanium... Wow. If it is a non flying application try chrome moly tubing. It will provide the strength without excess weight added. Think go cart construction.
This winters project; I wish to build a full size flying flea aeroplane? Every winter I set myself a project. Build a boat, learn a language etc. This year I have the urge to build an ultra-light plane.
Viewing the Flying Flea web-sites I have discovered that the Flea has become of age and developed into a super cool design.
I`m wanting to meet someone who really has built from the basics and also learn what variety of engines are most suitable.
I don't know much about this design, but building an aircraft will take more than a winter for an inexperienced builder if it is a 'from scratch' build. There are kit ultralights availabel that can be built in a fraction of the time.
Wood and fabric building takes patience and money. You have to use all kinds of delightful chemicals and not cut any corners. Like painting, prep is very important and time consuming. An inspector usually has to see parts of the aircraft before they are covered with fabric (like the wings) and give the aircraft a final inspection before flight.
I have built a few aircraft and it is very rewarding to see them fly at last.
For engines, probably one of the two stroke Rotax engines, they seem to be very popular for ultralight and homebuilt aircraft.
http://www.rotax-aircraft-engines.com/
Is trying to open a homebuilt aircraft business a bad idea? I should be starting college in the next few months and I am still trying to figure out what to major in. I have it narrowed down to Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace engineering. My ultimate goal would be to own my own shop building either motorcycles or airplanes. If I go with airplanes I would probably just start out with ultra lights and light sport airplanes and work up to 4 or 6 person planes. Has anyone ever though of doing this? Would it be at all possible? I know it won't be cheap or easy. I am more worried about being able to efficiently follow all of the FAA rules as far production built aircraft, and liabilities, and everything else that goes along with owning an aircraft business.
Thanks for any comments
Opening a homebuilt aircraft business could be a good idea. Make sure you do good research before jumping in. First, the FAA is currently reviewing the 51% rule and the shops that assist builders someone mentioned above. They are specifically reviewing what assistance a builder can receive and still certify their airplane as experimental-amateur built.
Ultralights would be a good start. But you need to get a copy of the FAR (CFR) part 103 so you understand what the FAA defines as an ultralight. You should join an ultralight organization so you get an understanding of what ultralight pilots need/want. The link below (Hart Aero) is an ultralight manufacturer that is doing things right. You should check them out.
If you start building light sport airplanes you need a copy of the applicable ASTMs so you know the regulations. Check our sportpilot.org to see what LSAs are currently offered.
If you go the homebuilt route, you need to join the EAA. You can't build airplanes (for sale, personal use ok), but can sell kits/parts/plans. I have listed some of my favorite homebuilt kit/plans suppliers (Zenith, Vans). Get a copy of Kit Planes annual kit guide. It has almost every kit offered for sale so you get an idea of what is currently available.
I wouldn't even consider manufacturing a type certified airplane. Aside from the liability, it cost's between 1 and 10 million dollars to complete type certification. If you change so much as one bolt, you have to retest all affected parts. What a PITA! That's the reason there has been only a few (less than 5) new light GA airplanes certified in the last 20-30 years.
Good Luck. Hope this helps.
An ultra-light airplane has a compass heading of 120 km/h east....? An ultra-light airplane has a compass heading of 120 km/h east. A wind is blowing from south to north at 20 km/h. What is the direction the plane is traveling? Use trig to determine the answer in degrees and include the compass direction (ex: south of east). Show a vector drawing as well.
Hi
Its hard to draw a diagram here but basically;
draw a vector pointing east with 120 km/h on it
draw a vector pointing north just below the previous vector so that its head touches the tail of the 120km/h vector. this should be labeled 20km/h
now match these to vectors by drawing a vector from the tail of the 20 km/h vector to the head of the 120 km/h vector. it should be pointing at around NE direction
To find this angle use trig:
let the angle be m
tan m = 120/20
m= 80.54 degrees (2.d.p)
therefore it is travelling north 80.54 degrees east or 084 T
Good luck
Is it legal to create ones own ultra-light aircraft ~ then fly it? With no training at all? I've half a mind to build a flying boat based loosely on the BF Goodrich inflatable airplanes of the Viet Nam War.
People toss out plastic, fiberglass insulation, wire and the occassional lawn mower engine...and that's pretty much all there is too this type of airplane...and they could it's light enough to qualify as an ultralight...
But as a "anti-communist" I fear that my political veiws against the Ronald Reagan Right Wing Communist Revolution in the USA has resulted in my "loss" of civil rights without meaningful trial before a jury of my peers (given I was d ate r ape drugged into "family" and "divorce" ~ with my conserfative appointed RN ~ after doing my job as a law enforcement official who got shot trying to stop his fools from selling d ope in the USA).
I think it's was wrong to suspend heabius corpus, the right to refuse uncoerced testimony against a wife, etc. as well (gee I think I know where they went...so are my civil rights lost or merely misplaced?)
But what do I "know" ~ after all, I've been told my observations of a communist takeover are merely a conspiracy theory...
Bcause after all, doesn't the Government decide what the communism means, and isn't victory against the REDS a known, because Rush Limburger says so? After All, isn't a RED, someone who believes in Liberal attitudes, rather than a person that believes in assuming guilt and forcing the victim of such assumptions to prove his innocense, or refuses to let others, not in his party or "of his convictions", to participate in the economy by governmental control over EVERY means of PRODUCTION?
Isn't a political / legal theory that would certainly have kept the Wright Brothers GROUNDED, and Henry Ford whittling on his back pourch dreaming of lost business opportunities after the courts shut him down for "attacking vested interests in a totally untoward way","ALL AMERICAN ENOUGH"???
Well, no, not it's not enough American for me to say: a judge, on a totally unbusiness related manner can ruin a man economically, in civil court, if he cannot answer the question yes or no: "Did you stop beating your wife?"
But the Ronald Wilson Reagan Communist Revolution has left winged us by going so far to the Communist Right that we's all the way around to the extreem Left!
So, is it OK to be a Wright Brother today and build a flying airbag?
Or would that threaten the "feedoms" of the Communists that call themselves Conserfative Democrats and Republicans in that this "violates" their communist right to control every means of production?
Cause, I really wouldn't want to be stepping on the toes of such "great Americans".
Who else but they could have gotten us in debt over 10 trillion dollars federal deficit, and over a trillion dollars in foreign trade deficit (something they call and account as "healthy business dealings" or a big part of "our" GDP).
How could we live, without THEM?
And I've no right to a jury trial before confiscation of well over what would certainly be now over a Million Dollars in property...so I'm stuck with an "order" mocking respect for children, that denies me all civil rights to any form of commerce, or License, such as pilot's license or perhaps even a right of Registration ~ if the local Commisar of Reagan's "family court" determines this is "inherantly a form of License"...without appeal or any sort of hope of report in any "form of PRESS media"...because family court "LAW" trumps all right to freedom of the Press as well as well.
So, I restate, because some of the Communists mocking Liberty here on Yahoo might not get it that this above seeming rant is merely a clarification of the problem implying I want Case Law. If availible I'd like more data than the fact that my business', home, family, property, career and etc. were summarily confiscated in "civil court" in a sealed "hearing" where nobody can know by Law what was said, outside of "no fault being found" and a simple divorce was issued on irreconsilable differences grounds, to a man not yet divorced from his first wife, by a later wife, found to be a wife by "common law".
I understand so much of the Communist Agenda has been determined to be a family court secret by current law (rather than to upset the "kiddies" that the government has gone RED they upset the civil right of the Nation to know there has been a fundamental shift in LAW towards a communist court's presumption of guilt before proof of innocense). But, it would be nice to have warnings of any indication that additional travesties might be forthcoming should I try to fly, associated with the 28 year old Ronald Wilson Reagan Right Wing Dictatorial Communist Revolution, because I tried to stop them from de@ling d ope, to finance the revolution and bribe (I suspect) d ope addict voters into voting essentially communist.
I mean, they must have "taken out" others who threaten their revolution...who later tried to fly a rubber plane...so what happens next
Do they sho ot down old bags of wind too; if we fly try to fly one past them?
Cool, and Trevor h, by the rules posted by the FFA as referenced by cherokee ... one seems not to need such a certificate of airworthiness. I guess, by my read.
aside the political rant, to answer your question, you do have the freedon to kill your self. That is most likely to happen if you insist on flying with out any instruction.
Ultra lights are not required to be registered nor is the operator required to have a pilots certificate.
There are a few rules you have to abide by, but other than that, have at it.
