I would suggest checking your internet connection speeds as you might be on a node that is far below what you are paying to receive. I use DSLreports.com/speedtest because it lets you archive a few of your your results, and look at others users results in your zip code. You might test often to verify your speeds when it feels slow, or quick to see if there is a speed variance in the time of day, or week.

U torrent? Is U torrent safe to download? Is it likely to give hackers access to my computer? Torrents are safer than peer to peer in the sense you don't connect to another user in the same way. However it would be quite easy fora user to embed a virus or a Trojan into the file you're downloading so they could get access to your computer. Essentially if you have up to date anti virus software it shouldn't be a problem as anything like this should be quarantined as soon as it is saved on your drive. Essentially it's as safe as you make it.

I'm assuming it ends with .zip or .rar. These are compressed files. you must unzip or uncompress them first. Try downloading 7-zip, a free program. Look for it at download.com. Un zip the file then you will probably have an axecutable setup. Run that.
If it's another file format such as .iso (an image of the original CD) you may have to burn it or mount it using Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/). Also you may have to explore the mounted image for a serial or crack but I will not go into how to do that in this forum.

Why does u torrent show up as a trojan in Yahoo anti-spy? I've installed u torrent on the recommendation of numerous sites that review the various bit torrent clients, and generally I've found it to be a very good program. But when I run Yahoo/CA anti-spy, it shows up as a trojan. None of the other programs (AVG, desktop doctor) I use for detecting malware show this result. Is this simply a false positive?

Avast tells me that uTorrent is malware too when uTorrent updates itself. I think it's because the updater runs out of a temp directory, which Avast finds suspicious. It is absolutely safe though.
