What would you do in the following situation? You are crossing the street for some reason. To be specific, the street your crossing is an intersection of three different streets; Streets A, B, and C. Just before you are about to cross the road, you hear a scream. You turn around and the first thing that catches your eye is the balcony of some apartment building. A man is standing on that building, dangling a little baby over the rim. Deep inside, you know that the man on the balcony is gonna let go of the child, and lo and behold, he does. But before this happens, another noise diverts your attention again. Crossing Street B is your mother, and driving down Street B is a drunk driver who's lost control of the vehicle. Common sense tells you that, if nothing is done soon, that drunk driver is going to run over and kill your mother. However, before you can even react to the situation at hand, more screams divert your attention to the final street, Street C. Above that street is an arching bridge, and on that bridge is the most beautiful woman (or man) that you've ever laid your eyes on. This woman just stands on the brink of the bridge, ready to jump off and give her life to the roaring traffic below. So, in this situation, what exactly would you do? Before you answer, you should know that in this situation, you can call upon any three objects/beings/things/places in the universe. You can also call upon things that are not real (superman, a wand, etc.) Superpowers are not included in person/place/thing. You cannot call upon x-ray vision or the ability to manipulate time. Only objects (anything that has mass) Try to save...anyone.

Anyone else witnessed this kind of thing? Is this why women drivers get such negativity? Driving to work this morning as I was slowing down to approach the roundabout/traffic lights at the end of the motorway I noticed the car in front of me kept stopping and starting abruptly. When I pulled up behind it I saw the woman driver applying a face full of make-up! She was literally wielding a mascara wand in one hand and a powder brush in the other and steering with the flats of her palms. When I honked my horn and shook my head at her she flipped me the finger! Anyone else seen crazy examples of multi-tasking whilst driving? The slightly balding, slightly overweight geezer in a flash BMW (every town has one) with a mobile phone glued to his ear - that's about as multi-tasking as it gets for blokes. What did these idiots do before mobile phones? Chew straw?

What happened in Kingstowne off the Fairfax County Parkway October 31st, 2007? So there was a lot of police in Kingstowne last night October 31st, 2007 and my friend her her boyfriend tried to turn around and the cop got pissed and threw his lil wand thing to direct traffic on my friends boyfriends car and made a dent, and the officer was really pissed. Something was going on and they didn't want anyone to go anywhere, and had traffic stopped and tons of police cars...was it a serious shooting or something? Anyone have any idea what happened? Mother vigilante kills sexual predator. Truth or urban legend? OK so yesterday I answer this question-- A woman shot & killed a sexual predator who hurt her son & other kids. Was she wrong or right, and why? I'm not sure what state this happened in, I heard it on the morning radio show. In St. Louis, I was called twice for jury duty and both times had to walk thru a metal detector. One time they took away knitting needles from a lady. I had a fingernail clipper in my purse and felt like a real desperada. Then I had to go to traffic court once and they had that metal detector set so sensitive, the steel shanks in my shoes set it off. I had to have a female guard wand me and walk thru the metal detector several times before we figured it was the shoes. My purse was emptied in the course of this and I had to surrender the fingernail clipper. I have it on good authority that security in other places is just as tight. the search engines will rank you higher and the visitors will come to you. Its important not to solely try the newest internet fad to gain traffic. For a long lasting business add alot of web page content that visitors want to read. Make them come to your site because it offers the resources they are looking for, not because they got tricked into clicking your link. They wont appreciate this and wont stick around long

Is it okay to make jokes about popular culture in your novel? Here's a scene from my novel, where a woman is teaching the kids about magic. When Dame Abhila had finished drawing on the ground she dusted her hands and stood up. ‘First of all, I’d like to say that magic probably is and isn’t what you picture it to be. There is no trafficking with demons, no sacrificing of children… at least, not in our kind of magic. Go join a cult if that’s what you’re looking for. You don’t wave a wand and say things in foreign languages, or smack your staff on the ground and tell beasts they cannot pass. That will get you mauled.’ Do you think that would be offensive to the author(s) in question? (I'm sure you can guess who they are) or do you think it's alright? The story's set *right now*(ish) in 2010/11 so I'm trying to tie it to present culture. I was more worried about it being offensive, and Redstar's aggressive and over-the-top reaction means it is. She's obviously a disrespectful person with a very short temper and little self control, not to mention low moral fibre*. I figured I'd use two very iconic fantasy books but I didn't mean to hit any nerves. I'll avoid culture references and only use place names and memorable events. *Btw I'm just joking Redstar. That was revenge for suggesting my stuff was derivative based on a few lines. Nobody likes that, and it's like a criticism of my imagination. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, maybe I'm just in a bad mood and reading too deep, but I take stuff like that personally... Choose your words more carefully? Perfectly fine. I don't think either author (or, as one is deceased, the descendants) will be offended. Making references to popular culture is common and if done properly can be quite effective. If the pieces of pop culture exist in the world you are creating and the reference makes a point, keep it. You haven't stolen any intellectual property or violated copyrights by doing so.
One word of caution about pop culture references. One or two references is cute. Multiple references is annoying and often comes off as a vehicle for the author to show disdain for a particular piece of pop culture or popular culture in general or makes it seem the author has no original thoughts. Also, more often than not, the references are fleeting (your references obviously are not) and will date your writing, making it irrelevant within a decade.
As an example, these things were my biggest complaint about Marked by PC and Kristen Cast. The pop culture references often overwhelmed the story and were almost always "flash in the pan" references. I read the book in 2010, the book was published in 2007. Within 3 years nearly all of the references were outdated. It got better as the books went on but it was almost too much for me to continue reading the series. Obviously there are some exceptions but on the whole such references should be used sparingly.
EDIT: Anyone who has real knowledge of copyrights would know neither of these references violate US copyright laws. And I disagree that you can't use pop culture as a reference in a fiction book, it is done all the time. Yes, they can date material but let's be frank, the number of books that are widely read 100 years or more after publication is extremely small. If an author sets out with the intention of writing "a book for the ages" they often come off as a pompous, self important windbag. And cultural references do not always mean a book will be obsolete. Nearly everything Jane Austin wrote was a commentary on the popular culture of the day. The customs and traditions that she was commenting on are all outdated now but I wouldn't consider her work obsolete.
That being said, Red Star has a point, these references do basically slap the reader in the face, and almost certainly would be cut by an editor.
