What happened to the tiki torches along Waikiki's strand? Perhaps it is a winter thing but on a recently holiday trip to Waikiki in December, I noticed that all the gas tiki torches that are normally lit each night were not only not lit...but were not even there! Has the economy rid Waikiki of the tikis or do they break them down each winter? one thing, there is no such thing as winter in hawaii. no seasons here. just warm all year round. those tiki torches are only lit on special occasions. we don't break them out just because you're on vacation here. the world doesn't revolve around you.

What is the best/affordable stuff to buy for tiki-torches to keep the bugs away? I wanted to take my boyfriend out into the woods near by for a date and even though i haven't seen anything but ants back there i would hate for some pesky bug to ruin our date. So what would be the best thing to use for tiki-torches, and do you think it is safe to light them in the woods? Not much better than a date in the woods with a pretty girl, so here's some ideas to keep the happiness level high.
The items can be found at your local retail/convenience store in the camping supplies and/or home/gardening section.
1) Citronella (sp?) candles are really handy for keeping flying insects at bay, and also provides a nice source of flickering light when it gets dark.
The Off! brand has a nice candle that looks like a translucent plastic lantern, and they also have a large-ish tin bucket. There are other brands with similar products that works equally as well, but citronella (sp?) is the key.
2) Consider getting a collapsible/folding table (preferably one in its own carrying case sporting a sling that you can use to carry it over your shoulder/on your back.) This would be handy to keep the food off the ground and make the ants work a lot harder to find it.
Also, ant killer sprayed on the legs of the table works as an effective deterrent and is better for the environment than spraying it on the ground.
3) If you're bringing several dishes of food (rather than sandwiches, sushi or individual plates of food) keep the food in reclosable plastic containers (rather than plastic bags or plastic wrap).
In addition to keeping the bugs out of the rest of your food while you enjoy your current plate, it helps limit the aroma of the food, which is what will be attracting some of the bugs (like wasps) to your campsite.

Where can I find tiki torches? My boyfriend and I are having a BBQ on Friday and we wanted to get some tiki torches. Does anyone know where we could find decent ones? I live in NJ so we have stores like Target, Walmart, Kmart, etc. Any input is great! I would rather have to make 1 stop instead of going to a few places. Thanks! What are those giant torches gas drillers build? So I live in Texas and I've seen a few of those giant torches around. They're about 20-30 feet high and somehow related to drilling for oil or natural gas- I believe the company involved is Barnett Shale. Just curious how they work. They're called flares. They bleed off excess or residual gas that can be contained in the rock or in small pockets as they drill.
