Isnt tungsten radio active? I just saw an add for tungsten wedding bands. I am a welder and I remember learning that the tungsten in tig welding is slightly radio active, is it the tungsten or was it the additive to the tungsten that was radio active? Wouldnt a tungsten wedding band be a sure fire way to have defective kids? One isotope of tungsten is radioactive with a half life of 1.8 trillion years (Wikipedia). So the radiation you would ever get from tungsten would be the most minute fraction of what you get from 14C and 40K in your body all the time.

I have to make some assumptions here...the biggest is that you are using scratch start. I would sharpen the tungsten down to a needle point with the lines running down to the tip, then slightly dull the tip making it flat on the end (like 1/32") this will give you a stronger tip for scratching. Next would be to use a 3/32" 2% thoriated tungsten with a #5 or #6 nozzle. Finally use a T-joint so that you can rest the nozzle on the steel while you get used to the process, once you get used to T-joints, switch to a Lap then a Butt...Good Luck, any questions email me.

Is there any way known? Are you talking about "Tungsten" as in the METAL or "Tungsten Carbide" which is a super-hard ceramic? They're often confused, though they are completely different. Tungsten metal is used in lightbulb filaments and for TIG electrodes........ Tungsten carbide (WC) on the other hand is used for sawblades, concrete drills, and machine tools.
In regards to metallic tungsten you might be able to do so if the part was really thin, or really small. I think you'd be kind of limited by the realistic amount of heat input you can get with TIG without the heat simply being dissipated by conduction. The hotter the temp required the more quickly heat is lost by conduction. You might compare this to trying to weld 1/2" plate with an oxyacetylene torch. The heat is simply not intense enough.
As you know tungsten metal has the second highest melting point of any material, after carbon. (graphite evaporates like dry ice instead of melting.)
Electron beam welding might work. Solid state friction welding might work too, but you'd still have to get it insanely hot.
Technically, tungsten carbide, is a metal-matrix composite. It's made up of carbide powder bonded with pure cobalt or nickel. This makes it easy to fabricate into odd shapes. You attach it to a saw blade, for example, by silver brazing. I've done it before. The stuff is still too brittle to be directly welded.

My stainless welds look like very flat, well penetrated mig welds, and are dark grey in color and appear to be oxidized? They do not have the roll of nickle look.
