Is it lawful to have strobe lights as hazard lights on a vehicle? I'm curious to know if It would be legal to install hideaway strobe lights in the tail lights of my truck. The standard amber hazard lights don't seem to catch enough attention. I feel that it would be safer to have strobes, rather than the dull flashing hazards. No not in the UK

I read that they make something in motion appear as if it's stationary during that flash of light, is that true? If someone was in a bar dancing and there are strobe lights producing regular flashes, although the person is in constant movement, would that person seem to pause in a certain move for a longer period of time thanks to the flash? Strobe lights are light sources that produce an extremely brief flash of light - around 1/1000 second or less. The flash might be one-time (as in a camera flash), repeating based on a timer, triggered by peaks in sound, or triggered by other things, but the common feature is the very brief flash.
As for "freezing motion" - it depends on what the strobe is doing and on what the motion is.
If you have a relatively dark room with someone dancing, and you fire a strobe ONCE, you will see the person's position at the instant the strobe fires - just like a still photograph.
If the person is just randomly dancing and you start a repeating strobe, you will see a series of "still frames" of the person in various positions. The motion does not actually stop, of course, but since it is only lit during brief instants you don't see the movement "in between" the flashes. Persistence of vision allows you to see these very brief "frames" for longer than the strobe's actual duration.
If a person is making a repeating movement -- always coming back to the same position in a fixed amount of time, as in, for example, calisthenics - and you set the strobe to fire at those moments, then to your vision it will seem that the person is not moving, not changing position, at all.
A related effect is the "wagon wheel effect" seen in movies.

Each time I have heard that strobe lights/disco balls affect pregnant women. First by a friend while at a party that had disco balls. The second time while attending a live theatrical play where a warning consent I had to sign about pregnant women and people with heart conditions to use extreme caution because strobe lights were being used. How can you get strobe lights turned off in clubs? My friend has epilepsy and is trying to campaign to get the strobe lights turned off just one night a week. She has been dismissed a lot and I was wondering if anything could be done. (This is in the city we are studying in, not the world.) What is with the rudeness? Strobe lights? Is it legal to put strobe lights like the ones on cop cars (like the ones found on undercover cop cars, hidden behind the grill I am fully aware that putting a lightbar on my car is completely illegal) into my car, as long as I don't display police anywhere so as making my car up to look I am police? I am aware of what will happen if I do put police stickers and strobe lights on my car, but I'm just interested in the hidden lights. Strobe lights can be used on civilian cars but only in particular applications.
As turn signals. However all the turn signals must be stroboscopic as well as the hazard flashers. They must all be the correct D.O.T. approved color. Amber for the front and red or amber for the rear. Strobe lights cannot be white in color and in direct sight. I have used strobe lights under my car for a nice effect with blue neon. As for hidden strobe lights under your grill, they cannot be red or blue in color. Only emergency vehicles are allowed to display red and blue flashing lights.
These laws vary slightly from state to state, but as a whole... you might want to rethink your idea of hidden strobes under your grill.

Strobe lights work on high voltage. If you are not technical, I would not fool around with that, since you can get a nasty shock. You make flash lights flicker by sliding the switch from on to off repeatedly.

How come NHL arenas will flash strobe lights from the rafters during the game? I've frequently been to the Shark's arena, but also visited Joe Louis, Honda Center, Staples Center, and United Airlines Center. And during the game they will flash strobe lights, not for a long time, just 2-3 times every couple of minutes. It seems to happen only when the puck is in play though. You are even able to see this by watching games on tv. Although it's easier to see in HD. But it gets real annoying after a while, and was just wondering if anyone else noticed this.
