I need a new bike? But which type of bike do I need for to use it everyday? Hi here is my story. I have 2 black Schwinn Phantom beach cruisers & the reason I love them is because they look cool but, I have too many problem's with it like flat back tire,chain comes out,replace new chain,LOW speed,grip handle bars gets loose,replace new light battery, & last it gets too much attention when I leave it lock up in street public. I do not know anything about bikes & I need one for a temporary transportation. So my question is which type of bicycle should I buy that I could use it for everyday,has higher speed,could carry stuff, & would give me less problems? Thank you. My budget would be $240 & I'm only going to add a rack just to carry school books only. You should look at either a road bike or a hybrid.
Get a bike with 700c wheels, and, depending on how much stuff you need to carry, fittings for a rack.
If you go to your local cycle store they will be able to help you, and they'll sort you out with a bike that fits your needs.

Should I replace my bicycle? I have a Sekai 1000 from the late 1970s. It's going to cost $125 to get it tuned up and get the tubes replaced. I don't have any special preferences for a bike, and I only do light commuting - no steep hills, no off-road, and I use it less than 5 miles a month. I only wonder if a new one for, say, $300 would cost less to maintain, thereby saving me money in the long run. I'm told the Schwinn Midmoor ($230) is made with cheap parts, and wouldn't be a good replacement for the Sekai. Is there any reason to think my Sekai would cost more to maintain than a new bike? BTW: One tube has a bad valve, the other loses air too quickly for even one trip. $125 for a tune up & new tubes? What bike shop are you using? And why do you need new tubes? Tubes are always out of direct sunlight - the leading cause for rubber rotting away. I would simply try inflating them first. See if they hold air for a few days. If so - you're good to go. Tires & tubes naturally lose air in a week or possibly less. I check the air in my tires before every single ride. (3 bikes)
And you don't need to be a mechanical wizard to do every day maintenance - like oil the chain. Many bikes from the late '70's are better than today's discount store bikes. So, if you only ride a mere 5 miles a month - why spend any more $$$? In order to get a quality bike today, even $300 won't cover the cost. If it rides nice & you still like it - hang onto it. And browse around the links below. You might be amazed at how easy bicycle maintenance is.

I'd be checking out local craigslist ads vs. eBay myself. This way you are buying locally & can test ride before you buy. Look for a nice hybrid or comfort bike with 21 to 24 speeds. Better ones are made by companies such as Raleigh, Trek, Giant, Specialized, etc. The link below may be helpful in picking out a bike.

Good bicycle for light exercise? I am planning to buy a bicycle(hybrid) I don't want to spend more than 250.00. I have been reading about different brands, but I can make my mind. I almost decided for a Schwinn, but have read some controversials reviews. Any suggestion? For light exercise I personally would not recommend a fully suspended moutain bike.
I purchased a Specialized Crossroads for my partner and she loves it. It has a light duty front shock that's not heavy and a suspended seat post with a nice cushy seat. If you are looking to pedal around the park with your family or run errands around town, I would recommend a bike like this. I'm sure other brands have something comparable. I believe this model is also in your price range.
As someone else said, go to your local bike shop. Most of the time they are very helpful. If you are as specific with them as you were here, they will show exactly what you need and explain the pros and cons of different brands and let you make up your mind.

Schwinn hybrid link bike? I just bought the schwinn link comfort bike from wal-mart as a christmas present for a friend who needs a bicycle with versatility. She wants to do trails and also take it through the neighborhood on liesurely rides. Was this a good purchase? I know nothing about bicycles and certainly didn't have a professional bike shop budget. will this bicycle be able to hold up with light trail work? Was it a good purchase at $180.00? Since its wal-mart we could always return it for a better quality bike or one that better suits her needs, if so which brand? TAKE IT BACK ---- NOW! Terrible bike with super cheap components. I'd much rather have a used "shop quality" bike from craigslist than anything new from any discount store.
Brand? Tons of 'em - all sold through REAL bicycle shops - not discount or big box stores. Raleigh, Trek, Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Marin, Felt Kona, Scott, etc. etc. Get on craigslist & start looking. Again - stay away from anything that originally sold through a discount store.

Going to work and close places basically (bout 5 mile trips) I assume the bike will probably get to 100 at least (50 for each bike) Is this bike for me or even worth the price? This is a bike (a very nice on at that) for someone who really knows how to ride. It's a "English Racer." More often than not I see people riding bikes on the road and they have no clue, knees sticking out, heels on the pedals, laboring along in too high a gear or pedaling furiously in too low a gear, the seat adjusted way too low. I'd suggest one of the retro, balloon tire single gear bikes that have become popular for you.

I have a schwinn le tour 3 bicycle that I want to fix up, because I like the frame. But is it worth it? The thing is that I like the frame, and I could make it lighter by converting it to a track bike, but I don't know if the frame would be strong enough to last me a good time. I don't want to race with it. I'd just use it to ride around LA. I'm hoping someone could give me some insight whether it would be strong enough not to break down on me. It is a 1978 Schwinn le tour 3 made in Japan. Alright so the thing is its already been converted. Its been converted since last summer. It rides nice. It weighs about 23 pounds, which is not that bad in my point of view. I could make it lighter if I get a new wheel set. And I'm currently riding a Pake. I just want to know if you guys by any chance know whether the material is strong. I don't want to do tricks. I'm just into biking for going the distance, and some racing if I ever do it. And to William who said it won't last long. Why wouldn't it? If you want to spend the time & $$$ doing it for your own enjoyment or riding pleasure, it might be worth it. If you expect to make a profit by fixing up an old bike & re-selling it - not worth it. You won't make a dime in profit. I know - I've tried it.

Upgrading bicycles for commute? I started out riding a hybrid trek bicycle in late-august to get me started on commuting on a bicycle to school/work. I live one mile from a DART light rail so I can ride when it rains, but on other days I ride 10 miles one way. I would say my current bike is falling apart and has done it's duty as a beginner bicycle but I think I need something new/faster. I was thinking of buying a schwinn road bike for my commute, if that is what I need. I am not really sure. I found a safe route with little traffic and am not forced to ride on the sidewalk/grass. I carry about 25-50 pounds on my book (which I can carry on a rear rack). Now that I have laid down some information, let me get to the question. I know I am physically fit to try out commuting on a road bike, but will I need a road bike? Sure I want to make my commutes faster but are road bikes appropriate for daily 20 mile commutes? Also, are road bikes suited to carry loads like my school books and work clothes? Last but not least, should I just stick with a hybrid bike but just another one? I want to get one from my local neighborhood bike shop. It is a Scwinn Prelude road bike. Pretty low quality, only 14 speeds, most likely a cheap freewheel hub vs. a better cassette hub, etc. I could list more. Plus, I see no way to properly mount a rear rack on that bike. Plus, only one frame size - a 55cm. Is that the correct frame size for you?

How expensive would it be to part together a decent trail/mountain bike? I have a head 810 bicycle. I don't know what this bikes frame was designed for. It does not have a suspension it is super light though, when I got it It had trail tires, so I'm guessing it's a trail bike. Anyways Its old, I too all the brakes and shifters off and replaced them with shimano stuff of a Schwinn, Its basically a frankenbike , It brakes and rides just no shifting. Im wondering what is the cheapest way to get this thing 100%. the crank is fine, the braking is flawless. How much would it be for parts and labor to get it shifting right. Im just using this for riding around on road and off but nothing extream. You need a shifter that has the same number of speeds as the cassette. The cost will depend on the quality of the parts. You can get derailleurs for $12 and shifters for $20. Cables are cheap and if do the work it may run you $40.
