Why would a gun fire off on it's own? My dad passed away last year because when he went to take his gun out and clean it, the fire arm just fired off and shot him in the head. This makes me very sad a lot. August 25 2009 this happened. I miss him. So why would a gun just fire off without a person pulling the trigger? It was a silver ruger. The particular gun doesn't have a safety. I'm not sure of the exact model. It wasn't a suicide, he was eating dinner with my mother when it happend. Those damn assholes, and forensics wouldn't even let us see him. Told us he was still being worked on while they were shipping him to another facility for an autopsy. The result was that it was an "accidental self inflicted wound". For all I care, they (forensics, and that damn detective) can blow each other. I think I will familiarize myself with firearms now. Is there some sort of firearm permit you must first obtain? I live in Virginia. ... Maybe I should correct that part about dinner. He had just finished eating dinner with my mother. They were together when it happened. He usually was pretty careful. The gun was new, he had it for a few days. And as far as I know, he was very familiar with firearms. He served the country for fourteen years, may not be much to some. And, he was into hunting. My condolences.
I have never heard of anyone eating dinner while cleaning a firearm.
Your attention should be on the firearm, NOT on anything else!
They do NOT just "fire off".
Mechanical failure COULD cause one to fire "accidentally", but even then it requires SOME outside action to cause it; BUT this is FIRST a failure on the part of the owner to be aware of the condition of the firearm.
You can NOT "clean" a loaded firearm. It must FIRST be unloaded.
He obviously failed to observe proper safe handling procedures such as:
1. a firearm is to be considered loaded until PERSONALLY checked and/or unloaded.
2. NEVER point a firearm at anything you do NOT intend to kill.
3. do NOT put your finger IN THE TRIGGER GUARD, OR ON THE TRIGGER, until you are ready to fire the weapon.

How much is my Ruger pistol worth? I was just given my grandfather's pistol he bought after leaving the armed forces and I'm wondering how much it's worth. From what I can tell, it is a Ruger .22 caliber Standard Mark I semi-auto (although the barrel reads "automatic pistol") made in 1964. It has been fired but is in reasonably good condition for its age. Only smart, useful answers please From the looks of current market conditions and gunbroker.com(an ebay for guns) id say your guns is about $300-$400. But yours could be a special edition and be worth more . but that's as specific as i can get from the information you've provided. Hope this helps.

Ruger MkII, or Ruger MkIII? I want to purchase a Ruger MK II or MkIII, for practicing handgun marksmanship. I am a passable rifle shot, but I haven't done much in the way of pistols. First off let me say: I HAVE STRIPPED AND REASSEMBLED A RUGER MK II BEFORE! It wasn't that hard to figure out. Don't anyone say "Oh that thing is a pain in the butt to strip down." Etc, . . . I will probably also include it in my backpack when hiking for survival situations. Don't say "Oh the 22/45 will be lighter" The 22/45 is top heavy, which reduces accuracy. I'd rather have a MkII or MkIII. I want it blued, with a 5.5 in. bull barrel, and I want target sights. What I'm asking is: Should I spend $300-350 on a brand new MkIII and start at ground zero, or should I spend $200-250 on a used MkII and risk ending up with something that is at the end of its life, or has other issues? I have shot a MkII before, and I didn't like where the mag release was. I kept hitting behind the trigger guard where EVERY mag release SHOULD be and reloads took longer then they should've. I don't want to learn a different battery of arms when I get a center fire. That being said, does the loaded chamber indicator on the MkIII cause any issues? Do any of the features of the MkIII cause it to be less reliable? So, which should I chose? Is it worth at least $100 both to start new, and to use the battery of arms I am used to? Thank you! Oh yeah, one more thing. I'd like a holster. A synthetic one that will completely close around the pistol so it won't get really scratched when riding around in the backpack. It needs to be able to hold a 5.5 in. bull barrel, and it'd be nice if it could hold a couple spare mags. Thanks again. Jeff, I said "battery of arms" not "manual of arms" A "manual of arms" was an instruction book for handling and using weapons in formation, whether in the field or on parade. And I'm not looking for a super-fast ninja-five pistol, if I were I'd get something synthetic like a Walther P22. I'm not a new guy, and I KNOW I don't know as much as you. I'm just asking your opinion, please don't deride me. And Fatefinger, the mag release is different. I hate the mk111's, I wont buy one. I do have several Mk1's, Mk11's, and even an old "pre-mark" standard. The reason I don't like the Mk111s is all the added BS that Ruger added to them in order to make them more "idiot proof". They have already had problems with the loaded chamber indicator, and the magazine disconnect I find to be horrible. Losing your mag, or accidentally dropping your mag means you no longer have a pistol, just an expensive hammer. Not good in a survival situation.
As far as finding a Mk11 that is "at the end of its life", I haven't seen one yet. Don't buy a beat up one, and you should be fine. Even the one I have that is practically silver because all the finish is gone works like a champ.
I think your concerns about "battery of arms" are unfounded. I have never been confused, or made a mistake in any of my weapons I have used. If I go duck hunting, I have a pump shotgun. If I am hunting deer on the river bottoms, I have a lever action rifle. Hunting on the plains? I have a bolt action rifle. Skeet shooting? I have an over/under. I have never forgot to pump, missed a safety, etc. because I was used to doing it a different way. If you familiarize yourself with your weapon, you wont have any problems.

Do it your self fire arm refinishing. I hope to get a response from a real man, not some idiot just answering ? I had a semi-auto handgun that started chipping at the slide, so I removed all the original black powder paint from only the slide to see what the steel under-neath looked like. When completely whipped down with steel wool, it actually looks good. Now, if I could just keep it looking that good. After touching it a while, it starts to look not so good. How, if at all, could I keep that color (steel) or could I somehow paint it, or lacquer it, or something with out sending to an espensive gunsmith. I want it to go from black to steel (silver, nickel, chrome, or whatever that looks similar). I'm too worried about mistakes, cause the gun in question is cheap, I don't use it for CCW, got G26, Sig 226, and Ruger P95 for that. Just would rather refinish it in-stead of throwing it away, cause I wounldn't get $50 for if tried to sell. Helpful response's please. Best answer is have it plated, - but that's expensive,

Which semi- automatic handgun (pistols) name brands are the best H&K, Sig Arms, Spring field Armory, Glock, or? Ruger? My main concern is which name brand fire arm doesn't Jam or misfire very much and is it normal for a semi auto to jam or misfire? Which one of these name brands would you pick or prefer for yourself? Keep in mind I am looking for one that doesn't jam or misfire very much. Any advice is dually appreciated. none of those are going to jam more than the next there al solid firearms but i always prefered the springfield or glock becuase there cheap and im know to do some damage to my guns and they can take it

Ruger P95 or Ruger SR9 ?? ((Pistols))? Hello, I am planning on buying a pistol but wanted some other opinions on the Ruger P95 - 9mm. and SR9 - 9mm. models. I have looked at multiple reviews of the models from other people on youtube. But I guess that just isn't good enough for me. -- Of course I know not every one prefers the same things in a gun, but I still would like to ask. Now I have not heard any bad things (so far) about the P95, performance wise. Yes, I have heard complaints with it being to bulky and to this and to that.. But i'm just looking for a good shooting, good handling, just an all out good on performance handgun. And not so much something for concealment, because all i'm buying one for is for target practice and such. -- Now as for the SR9, I have heard about Ruger recalling that model to make a few adjustments and such.. Other then that (Up until just recently) I have heard it was a very good fire-arm, much like the P95 minus the build. -BUT, I saw a video on youtube where the SR9 was having very big problems with going into battery. (i.e. Malfunctions). So saying that. Would you guys care to leave you opinions on the models? Perhaps some personal pro's and con's that you have had with them. -- Much appreciated. In addition to the faulty of the SR9, the video I saw it from said it was a brand new, right out of the box, from the factory pistol. I owned a p95 up until very recently and i got to say it was a very nice purchase. the gun is inexpensive fun to shoot easy to use and a great fit in my hand ( and no I don't have big hands). All of this fluff about it being such a large gun is likely coming from some idiot that wants a gun to hide in his purse lol. this gun can holster well and be carried all day without holster pain and is an all around great gun. Also the p;95 comes with a built in accessory rail that is great for either a flashlight laser aim or pepper spray (but the pepper spray is law enforcement only in many areas). I would definatly advice you to get the p95 and if you get the stainless steal just make sure you clean it often because even though they are stainless they will rust if they are neglected.
Dont take my word for it though go to a range and ask about renting or borrowing a gun to see if you like it. they will let you shoot it at thier range and then you will know if you like it.
be careful asking gun advice online there are a lot of idiots that think price = better and a lot of people that are fanboys of one specific gun and ignor flaws because they see it as more of a sports team lol

Gun Refinishing (ruger p85 MKII)? This gun was given to me by my uncle. I do not know what has been done to it, but it looks like some cheap form of duracoat or even paint was on it at one time. I have stripped and cleaned it as good as I can. I only aim to refinish the frame. Its aluminum I think. What is the simplest way of refinishing this fire arm. Yeah your pretty much limited to DuraCoat. Check out the link below for these guys out of Wisconsin. I'm not sure if you could ship it to them or if you'd rather do it yourself but they have alot of pictures up to at least give you an idea of the possibilities.
