Anyone worked in Saudi Arabia? I have a job offer with Al Alasam Aircraft Company in Riyadh and was wondering what it was like in Saudi. ie schools, safety, recreation, and shopping. Also has anyone lived in the Jadawel Compound?? I lived in Saudi Arabia for 13 years. My dad worked there. We didn't live in a compound.
Life in compound is very dull and you will feel very isolated and confined to a small area.
Over all, the country is very racist, narrow minded, and boring.
In terms of safety: Outstanding
Shopping: Excellent
Recreation: Sure if you are into family outings.
Schools: Oh please, poor countries like Pakistan do better.

Someone tell me whats going on? Today, at aproximately 10:35 am EST a low flying aircraft passed overhead near the area I was in at the time. But this was not the kind of plane people fly for recreation, this looked something along the lines of a Boeing 747, it was very large. It was at the very most 800 feet above ground. This occurced in south eastern Ontario, very near to the Canada US border, 30 miles south of Ottawa. The plane flew low, and very fast, then pulled some crazy loopy spiral and flew off in another direction with a bit of black smoke trailing from the right wing. We are coming up on 9/11, and I'm curious..did anybody see this? It definately wasn't some kinda of airshow, it was the only plane I saw all day. Does anybody know what it might be? It scared me. Your description could match a number of military cargo planes, and even a couple of bombers. You did not mention what color it was or whether it had a high wing or a low wing.
The maneuver you describe could be a military training maneuver or part of an equipment test. On the other hand, there is always the remote possibility that it was an unauthorized flight of some kind.
To set your mind at rest, you can contact your local law enforcement center. They can either give you an explanation or tell you what agency to call.

Recreation Aviation? Does work in the newly developing "recreational aviation" area - including aircraft such as Tecnams, Jabirus, etc - count for much in terms of building commercial pilot experience? I've been offered work in these aircraft but not sure how much value it has - does it have much? Sorry, should be more clear - recreational aviation as I called it, I more meant in reference to smaller aircraft such as Tecnams or Jabirus - as compared to the standard Cessnas or Pipers. You can log flight hours in a Light Sport aircraft for total flight time in your logbook, just as you would in any other private airplane, but you cannot use them for commercial experience, because Light Sport aircraft are not authorized for commercial use. Even the Light Sport instructor's certificate is different than a standard Private Pilot Instructor. The EAA web site has lots of info on the new Light Sport certifications...
The type of commercial pilot experience an employer wants to see is multi-engine and turbine-engine time.

Electric Aircraft. Are there any available to the general public? I know there have been huge advances in Alternative fueled vehicles and will probbably be getting an Electric Boat, but what about small aircraft for recreation? Like an ultralight or a Powered Parachute or even a glider? I'm not looking for 8 hour flights, just a simple 2 hour putting around flight, that is eco friendly. I know electrics have a long way to go to make the same power and run time of fossil fuels, but has this gap been bridged with recreational aircraft? Well Kasey should have done a simple Yahoo search before shooting off his mouth.

I knew there were electric powered planes. The ones I have seen are more like a glider with a small engine. They only use the engine while in flight to extend their time aloft.
But the above link shows a nice private aircraft that is all electric and there are several more links with other aircraft.
So they are on the way. Problem is the price.

Pilot as a career? Or just for recreation? Hi I'm a sophomore in high school and I need some counseling. I really want to be a pilot. I have loved airplanes since I was like 5, and I still LOVE IT. Last year, I went to Egypt during vacation. on the way back from Cairo to JFK, the Egypt Air B777-300 had a problem. Fuel leak. Plane descended like free fall to land in Greece, which was the closest airport. Descending REALLY FAST at 35000 + ft was terrible. I mean, passengers felt uncomfortable. We landed at Athens airport safely. you know how like when people have a frightening experience in something they get sick of it?? I still want to be a pilot. Even though the emergency landing was a bit scary, I felt like I wanted to fly again. But many people say pilot these days make lousy income and work their butt off to pay house rent. They say the life of a pilot isn't as glamorous as it seems. In fact, it's very repetitive and boring. I haven't flown an aircraft by myself. I havent worked in an airline company so I don't understand them. I don't want to be like one of those people who was a pilot and quit because of lousy pay and work condition, you know? either I go for a pilot, or an engineer. engineer is my backup job. however, im not enthusiastic in engineering than I am in aviation. sorry for my poor sentences.. I wrote this in like 3 minutes... any advice?? experience from current/former pilot would be appreciated thank you! Go to a flight school and talk to them. Go for a fam flight and see what you think. You will see, up close and personal, what's involved. You will sit in the left seat and fly the plane yourself a bit.
Be a pilot because you like flying planes. There is no other reason to do so. Be warned: it's addictive!
Later: Just wait until you learn how to lose lots of altitude quickly and safely yourself. Sideslips are the usual way. Flying an airplane sideways is definitely interesting. You can lose height even faster in a spin. Whee!

Where to: fly, take off, and land ultralight aircraft.? We live on Egypt Lane in Clinton, CT across route 81 there is a recreation area called Indian River, games are often played there and there are plenty if large fields, down the road there is a horse riding place, do any of you think we could get them to let us fly there? Meaning the owners of the horse riding place, or the town hall for the Recreation area. Also the High school isn't too far, do you think we could go from there? There are fields there without fences or anything. Of course on all of this I mean legally, not physically, they all have enough space for take off and landings. At the Rex place people have gotten permission to shoot paintball, and fly rc planes. Again ultralight not actual planes. I live in Clinton and the Indian River fields, the horse farms, and the school are all too small to fly ultralights, even if you could get permission (which you can't). Furthermore the surrounding areas would be considered congested areas by the FAA, and you can't fly ultralights over any congested area.

Hi. I am looking for tips, books, websites, groups,etc. about full-scale aircraft model making. ie 1:1 scale. I want to make static replicas up to a museum-quality level, but I don't really have any commerical aspirations. This is really just something for my own personal recreation - albeit on a very large scale. I only want to make WWII aircraft replicas. I guess this isn't really an answer, but I think that is probably the most awesome pasttime that any body could come up with! Question on aircraft control sticks? Ok so later on in life im planning on getting an aerobatic plane just for recreation. I noticed that most cessnas and airbuses have the "steering wheel" for controlling the aircraft. In jets such as the f-16 and f/a-18 (along with hundreds more), they have a joystick like stick for controlling the aircraft. This is so that they can have full control over the plane. If you want to roll left, push it left. Its that simple. Are there any cheap, beginner aerobatic planes out there with a joystick like stick that are for sale to the general public? If its a jet even better. I may end up joining the airforce, not sure though since i understand the very very low odds of making it to be a fighter pilot. The "joy stick" as it is aptly names is a very natural way to control a plane. Once you have flown a stick you'll understand. The "yoke" (or steering wheel as you call it) has become commonplace in most aircraft because you can easily grip it with both hands and apply a lot of force to the controls if needed. In large aircraft there are times where you want both hands on the yoke. The down side is that students tend to over-control more with a yoke than a stick. Another reason for yokes is that you can mount more toggle switches and push buttons on them than a single stick will comfortably hold.
A great affordable plane with a stick that is a dandy trainer is the old Aeronca 7AC Champ. I've taught lots of people to fly in them. A good Champ that is freshly restored costs no more than $30k USD. http://www.airbum.com/pireps/ClassicCompChamp.html
A step up from that is the Bellanca Citabria (more modern version of same aircraft) that is certified for aerobatics. Citabria is "airbatic" spelled backward. The top end of that line of aircraft is the Bellanca Decathalon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Champion_Citabria
There are many, many other aircraft that use a stick instead of a yoke but the Champ is about the best "beginner plane" out there in my opinion.

Small aircraft for recreation...? What types are there? I don't know how to google about his matter... If you know about the prices of them, please tell me or give me the link... Thanks! one of them Robinson helicopter (the dual seat or the four seat could do) or the Schweizer glider would be great.
