what is the best alternative to a gas camping lantern? I am going camping soon with my two boys who are 4 and 18 months old. I have been shopping around for a decent camping lantern....I have come to the conclusion that a gas lantern would probably give off the brightest light but I am abit concerned about the safety aspects of using it will two young children charging around. At the moment I am thinking of a rechargeable LED lantern (15 or 30 LEDS), does anyone have any experience or recommendations??? Mr. Cains is right on, Coleman products cannot be beat. what a lot of folks forget is that gas or propane lanterns although extremely efficient are not safe to use in a tent. The fire danger is one specially with little ones about and second is carbon-monoxide poisoning. Getting the new LED technology lights from Coleman is the best thing to do.

What's the best high-power rechargeable workshop torch/lantern? I've had three, and they either don't hold their charge, or are unreliable (bulbs, switches, etc). If you've got some advice, I'd be grateful, Thanks good evening, About 15 years ago, I bought a rechargeable made by a company called NITECH in Hastings Sussex. It is a serious lighting machine. In actual fact I stumbled across it by exploring "What did the emergency services use" thinking this was a good place to start for a reliable and enduring torch. I have just looked up the NITECH site and under products you will see a yellow one. Thats it.
Incidentally, last year I had to replace the battery, but, no gripes after 14 years of continuous service. If summary, if lost, I would definately replace with same one. The yellow one will charge from mains or from cigar ligther - couldn't be handier could it? fully charged lighting cycle is around 6 hours or so. Can a 12v "lantern" battery be used to power the ASD air compressor model 9815?(see details? Ok now this may sound a littile idiotic to you smart people out there, but is it possible to use a 12v lantern battery with the above mentioned 12v air compressor? The air compressor is supposed to be plugged into a cigarette port in a vehicle, but I was wondering whether the the lantern battery would be an adequate substitute. If so, please include a website or store at which I could purchase a rechargeable lantern battery, or even if one exists. If not, please tell me of a battery under $15 that would be an adequate substitute. If possible, I need a rechargeable one. I will be using this for a science far project the following school year, so any ideas would be appreciated. Also if you need more information, leave a comment saying so. But please, constructive comments... Let me just explain my project a little bit. This is still on the sketchy side, so please correct me if i'm wrong somewhere. What I plan to do is basically build a small-scale "air powered" car. Since I will only be using this air compressor to fill up an "air hogs" airplane, I was wondering whether or not I really needed the full 10A or so to fill up this 15-psi airplane. I happent o have a nebulizer at home, so would a 12v lantern battery be able to power an inverter which in turn could power the nebulizer? And also, would the nebulizer be powerful enough? it will take 12 vDC at 10A (which is a LOT!). 10 amps may be a maximum, with a smaller amount actually used most of the time, but this article about 12-volt compressors:

says his compressor takes about 4 amps, which he will either provide with a deep-cycle marine battery (a regular car battery is only designed to provide a burst of charge for starting, not a continuous effort), or from a 6 amp battery charger.
By the way, the ASD site says to only operate this thing for 15 minutes or less at a time.
If this thing you're making absolutely HAS to be powered by a battery, then bearing in mind the 10A load it may use, then you will need at least a 10 A/hr battery. Also, bear in mind that batteries have a maximum safe current that they can supply for a given amount of time, so just stringing 8 D-cells together will not only discharge very quickly, but they may also destroy themselves (catch fire). It will last less than an hour under continuous use at 10 amps, but if it's just 4 amps, it will last maybe 2.5 hours. One of the things about the amp/hours of a battery is that, the more current is needed, the smaller the A/h number is - this is a 12 A/h battery, but at high currents it's more like 8 (or about 6 for 10A). At any rate, the current price for this battery is over $50 (not including shipping, and it's heavy), so you're pretty much sunk on the $15 amount, at least from Mouser. That compressor is simply a high-draw appliance, so you will either need a big battery, or (like that other guy) run it with a 12-volt battery charger.
Another thing you can do is convert a PC ATX power supply into a lab power supply (so that you can use the power supply to power other things besides PCs). If you have an old power supply lying around, you can do this for dirt cheap. There are several articles on how to do this:

Even a 300-watt supply will give you at least 15 amps at 12 volts, but it will get a bit hot...

Is it better to recharge batteries in series or in parallel? I have 2 6-volt rechargeable lantern batteries, and 1 6-volt solar panel. Would it be better to recharge then in series or in parallel? I asked this 3 times in the environmental groups and never got a single answer, so maybe one of these "scientifically enlightened" evolutionist can answer. I will just have to make sure I do the opposite of what they say so that I will have it right. You can charge batteries in either series or parallel - the issue is not just the method of connection but also the voltage you can apply.
Two 6-volt batteries connected in parallel requires 6 volts of charge because each battery "sees" the charger individually. In series, they need 12 volts to charge because the charging current passes through both batteries before completing the circuit.
So you need to recharge from your solar panel either one at a time, or both in parallel.

On the other hand, if you are taking this camping.... you'll probably be taking fuel for a stove too. I'd almost look into a gas lantern. If you are going to have fuel available anyway. They are much, much brighter. I'd bring one of these guys for campsite light and keep a headlamp for in-tent lighting and trips to the latrine.

Rechargeable Lanterns or Torches? I am looking for a reliable - long lasting through the night either Torch or lantern thats powered by a Lithium ION battery with dimmer controls. Have tried Amazon, and they have a few, but not with dimmers or remotes. Can anyone suggest anything? Must be cheap, reliable, long lasting, dimmer control, and NOT fluorescent. I dont think you'll find that sort of spec. certainly not 'cheap'! What about an LED type??

12volt Rechargeable Lantern? Looking for a lantern that I can plug into a cigar lighter on the boat, All the ones I've seen do not work when the lantern is being recharged. I need one that will work when connected to the 12 volt supply. Any ideas please?

Crank rechargeable lanterns? I'm looking at a camping lantern and notice they have crank ones now. What I cant seem to find is how long they last on say i minute of cranking? Has anyone got some experience with these? I got one for Christmas. I get about 2 hours light for 1 minute of cranking. Looks like the medium-priced ones are as good as the expensive ones. The extra-cheap ones I've checked out were rather flimsy.

Does my Coleman twin tube lantern just have burned-out bulbs? I have a Coleman twin-tube rechargeable lantern that was given to me years ago as a gift. It's gotten sporadic use on the occasional camping trip or power outage, and I've always been pleased with the results. It didn't light, and I assumed that the battery was drained so I charged it overnight and tried again this morning. Still nothing. I opened it up to make sure that the bulbs were in properly, and they are. The "charging" indicator light does light up when I plug the lantern in. Is it possible that the bulbs are just burned out? There were no problems with it last time we used it. A new lantern is maybe $40; new bulbs would be maybe $8. So not a huge amount of money either way, but I don't want to spend the time and money buying replacement bulbs if the lantern is somehow shot. Maybe something is wrong with the battery or the connections? Has anyone else had a similar problem? The charging system may not be working. Leave it plugged in for a day and see if it works. If not, I'd look at getting another one.

How long does an Energizer rechargeable Lantern RCE4AA2 bulb last for? I've just bought a new Energizer Rechargeable Lantern RCE4AA2 for Bunnings Warehouse and I wonder how long the Krypton light bulb will last for? Not really shure, but I would think that said lamp should
have a life of about 3K hours, depending on the frequency
of being turned on and off and the time being on when the
unit is at full charge. This may vary, because of different
manufacturing processes and materials used to produce
the lamp in question. When replacing the lamp, never
touch it with your bare hands. The oil in your skin will
cause the lamp to fail as soon as it warms up. If you do
happen to touch the glass, use rubbing alcohol to clean
the glass envelope as best you can. This will save you
down time. Always have at least 2 (two) replacement
lamps on hand in case of an emergency inside the unit.
