Long lasting, Rechargeable Bedroom Light? I was wondering if its possible to make a rechargeable light that has the strength of or close to that of a plugin lamp. I wanted the charge to last a good while and be able to light up my bedroom. I have no experience making lights so....if you guys could recommend a light type and a rechargeble battery type that'd be great.
What I am aiming for is a paper lantern type light. I will have 3 of them in my bedroom in 3 out of the 4 corners. It will be cylindrical in shape and above it i was hoping to make a small housing unit for the batteries and what not, while keeping it decorative so it doesn't look bad.
Well Judging from my current lamp. It isn't too bright but it's bright enough to fill the entire room. So i figure 3 lamps that can keep me from tripping over stuff will be perfect.
Also, dimmable would be a nice feature, so that'd probably require more powerful lights, but its not a necessity
Thanks for your help
Well, LEDs will work, but you have a couple issues: FIrst, how bright do you want the room to be? Bright enough to read? Bright enough so you can just walk through it without busting your knee on a table? Next, you have to decide your cost. What are you willing to pay? There are some very bright LEDs but are still fairly expensive. Next, look at the batteries. AA, C, Ds? Or a rechargable pak like a little notebook battery?
My thought is this...There are existing lights (I just bought a couple at Harbor Freight for 3.99) that could be fitted with NiMH batteries, so when they needed charges, you could just put them in the wall-wart charger. You could do that for 20 bucks, easy. The decoration on the lamps and the "paper lamp" look, you do on your own.
Rechargeable Lanterns or Torches? I am looking for a reliable - long lasting through the night either Torch or lantern thats powered by a Lithium ION battery with dimmer controls. Have tried Amazon, and they have a few, but not with dimmers or remotes. Can anyone suggest anything? Must be cheap, reliable, long lasting, dimmer control, and NOT fluorescent.
I dont think you'll find that sort of spec. certainly not 'cheap'! What about an LED type??
Try GloBug, they're US based but will send to UK.

Is it better to recharge batteries in series or in parallel? I have 2 6-volt rechargeable lantern batteries, and 1 6-volt solar panel.
Would it be better to recharge then in series or in parallel?
I asked this 3 times in the environmental groups and never got a single answer, so maybe one of these "scientifically enlightened" evolutionist can answer. I will just have to make sure I do the opposite of what they say so that I will have it right.
You can charge batteries in either series or parallel - the issue is not just the method of connection but also the voltage you can apply.
Two 6-volt batteries connected in parallel requires 6 volts of charge because each battery "sees" the charger individually. In series, they need 12 volts to charge because the charging current passes through both batteries before completing the circuit.
So you need to recharge from your solar panel either one at a time, or both in parallel.

Can a 12VDC/1amp output charger safely replace a 12VDC/400mA output charger? I have a hand-held lantern that uses a lead acid rechargeable battery and a 12VDC/400mA charger that came with the lantern. I think the charger may be bad because the lantern will not recharge. I have a 120VAC-to-12VDC/1A adapter that plugs into 120VAC wall socket and accepts a standard auto cigarette lighter adapter which also came with the lantern. If I plug the cigarette lighter adapter into the 12VDC/1amp adapter and connect that to the lantern, the charging indicator light on the lamp comes on. Will the difference in output harm the lead acid battery in the lantern?
Your replacement is actually better than the faulty one.
12Vdc made them to have the same output. 1A means the maximum current the adapter can support. If the lantern needs one 100mA, the adapter will give only 100mA NOT 1000mA.
Question About making lamp? Ok for art I am making a lamp. I am using this diagram....
http://www.hometips.com/how-it-works/wiring-light-switch.html
My question is.... For my power source I will be using a lantern battery or a drill battery because it is rechargeable. How big should the light bulb (in watts or volts) be so the lamp can be on for a couple of hours?
Also, for creativity I am going to add little shelves to put like pens in. What shape should I make it? I was originally going to make it a pencil shape but decided to add the drawer.
I'm mostly need the first question about volts/watts. Thanks!
You CAN'T use that diagram! It is for AC (alternating current) connection and a battery is DC (direct current). Also, If you are using a battery you can't use regular light bulbs because they only work on 120 volt power. You would have to use bulbs matched to the battery voltage, like those in flashlights. If it is a 9 volt battery you would have to use a 9 volt bulb, or a 12 volt bulb with a 12 volt battery. The only way you could really do this is to buy a flashlight or camping lantern and take it apart to get the right bulb, bulb socket and matching battery. These bulbs are very low wattage so it will only be as bright as the maximum output of the battery and it will only last as long as the rated discharge capacity of the battery.
Based on the other question you asked, you really don't know enough about electricity to safely attempt this project. You either need to get a shop teacher to help you with this or choose a different project. You could electrocute yourself or blow up a battery and burn yourself.
Why are rechargeable batteries only rated at 1.25 volts? The manufacturer of my rechargebles claim they will work in any device that accepts aa aaa c d etc. I came to an impasse with my Accu-Rite remote rain guage. It requires 1.5 volt alkaline and rechargeables will not reach its threshold for performance. Every other device: Flash lights, lanterns, remote temp and humidity guages, have accepted and worked well with rechargeables. Thanks. The chemical reaction in recharagle batteries produces 1.25 volts. Most devices can handle the lower voltage and the benifit is that the batteries are recharable. In your case, the 1.5 volts per cell is needed for the water sensor to work properly.
Charge sealed lead acid gel battery - in one go vs in several time intervals? I have a rechargeable lantern. The battery in it is a VRLA sealed lead acid battery rated at 6V 4.5Ah The recommended charging time for the lantern is 16 hours to fully charge the battery after full discharge. What I want to know is, instead of charging continuously for 16 hours, what if I charge the battery for say 10 hours and then say charge for another 6 hours the next day, giving a total charge time of 16 hours, but not done continuously ? Will it be the same as charging continuously for 16 hours ? Will charging this way in two instances fully charge the battery? I will not be using the lantern between the two charging sessions. And the time duration between the two charging sessions would most probably be less than one day. To make my self clear, let me tell you why I may have to do this. Normally when the lantern is discharged, I would plug it in to the mains and leave it for 16 hours for the battery to charge fully and then unplug it (unfortunately there is no charge full indicator in this lantern). But say I had started charging and after 10 hours there was a mains power outage. then say after 2 hours, the mains power was restored. Now for how long should I charge? Is it 6 hours because initially I charged 10 hours and only 6 hours deficit of the total 16 hours, or should I charge it again for a total of 16 hours which may over charge the battery as it had already charged for 10 hours? If you can monitor the current into the battery during charge you will know when it is fully charged. Most likely it will be almost fully charged at 10 hours. Sealed Lead Acid Batteries like a constant voltage charger so the current will vary, or decrease as they charge. Once you see the current drop to just a few ma you will know it is charged. 10 hours plus 6 hours should fully charge it and it will not harm the battery to leave it on the charger longer than that.
Does my Coleman twin tube lantern just have burned-out bulbs? I have a Coleman twin-tube rechargeable lantern that was given to me years ago as a gift. It's gotten sporadic use on the occasional camping trip or power outage, and I've always been pleased with the results. Here's a link to the model/parts list. http://www.coleman.com/coleman/parts/ProductImage2.asp?product_id=5348-700 We had an outage yesterday and got the lantern out, and it had been accidentally switched on when we put it back in the box last time. It didn't light, and I assumed that the battery was drained so I charged it overnight and tried again this morning. Still nothing. I opened it up to make sure that the bulbs were in properly, and they are. The "charging" indicator light does light up when I plug the lantern in. Is it possible that the bulbs are just burned out? There were no problems with it last time we used it. A new lantern is maybe $40; new bulbs would be maybe $8. So not a huge amount of money either way, but I don't want to spend the time and money buying replacement bulbs if the lantern is somehow shot. Maybe something is wrong with the battery or the connections? Has anyone else had a similar problem? The charging system may not be working. Leave it plugged in for a day and see if it works. If not, I'd look at getting another one.
Can a 12v "lantern" battery be used to power the ASD air compressor model 9815?(see details? Ok now this may sound a littile idiotic to you smart people out there, but is it possible to use a 12v lantern battery with the above mentioned 12v air compressor? The air compressor is supposed to be plugged into a cigarette port in a vehicle, but I was wondering whether the the lantern battery would be an adequate substitute. If so, please include a website or store at which I could purchase a rechargeable lantern battery, or even if one exists. If not, please tell me of a battery under $15 that would be an adequate substitute. If possible, I need a rechargeable one. I will be using this for a science far project the following school year, so any ideas would be appreciated. Also if you need more information, leave a comment saying so. But please, constructive comments...
Let me just explain my project a little bit. This is still on the sketchy side, so please correct me if i'm wrong somewhere. What I plan to do is basically build a small-scale "air powered" car. Since I will only be using this air compressor to fill up an "air hogs" airplane, I was wondering whether or not I really needed the full 10A or so to fill up this 15-psi airplane. If you need more details about this project, you can email me at anandtech1532@yahoo.com. BTW thanks for the help electro fogey.
Also, let's say I scrap this certain compressor. I happent o have a nebulizer at home, so would a 12v lantern battery be able to power an inverter which in turn could power the nebulizer? And also, would the nebulizer be powerful enough? It's a DevilBiss model.
I looked on the ASD site, and according to this:
http://www.safety-devices.com/pump_9815.htm
it will take 12 vDC at 10A (which is a LOT!). 10 amps may be a maximum, with a smaller amount actually used most of the time, but this article about 12-volt compressors:
http://www.instructables.com/id/convert-a-tire-inflator-type-air-compressor-into-a/
says his compressor takes about 4 amps, which he will either provide with a deep-cycle marine battery (a regular car battery is only designed to provide a burst of charge for starting, not a continuous effort), or from a 6 amp battery charger.
By the way, the ASD site says to only operate this thing for 15 minutes or less at a time.
If this thing you're making absolutely HAS to be powered by a battery, then bearing in mind the 10A load it may use, then you will need at least a 10 A/hr battery. Also, bear in mind that batteries have a maximum safe current that they can supply for a given amount of time, so just stringing 8 D-cells together will not only discharge very quickly, but they may also destroy themselves (catch fire). Here is an example of a battery you might use (if a marine battery isn't available):
http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?qs=BG8onI7C4yocTQZoII3Tbw%3d%3d
It will last less than an hour under continuous use at 10 amps, but if it's just 4 amps, it will last maybe 2.5 hours. One of the things about the amp/hours of a battery is that, the more current is needed, the smaller the A/h number is - this is a 12 A/h battery, but at high currents it's more like 8 (or about 6 for 10A). At any rate, the current price for this battery is over $50 (not including shipping, and it's heavy), so you're pretty much sunk on the $15 amount, at least from Mouser. That compressor is simply a high-draw appliance, so you will either need a big battery, or (like that other guy) run it with a 12-volt battery charger.
Another thing you can do is convert a PC ATX power supply into a lab power supply (so that you can use the power supply to power other things besides PCs). If you have an old power supply lying around, you can do this for dirt cheap. There are several articles on how to do this:
http://www.instructables.com/tag/?q=atx+power+supply&limit%3Atype%3Aid=on&type%3Aid=on&type%3Auser=on&type%3Acomment=on&type%3Agroup=on&type%3AforumTopic=on&type%3AforumTopic=on&sort=none
Even a 300-watt supply will give you at least 15 amps at 12 volts, but it will get a bit hot...
Can I charge a 12V, 8 amp battery with a 12V, 2 or 10 amp charger? I've got a small 12V, 8 amp lantern type rechargeable battery that I've lost the charger for. I was wondering if I could use my car battery charger to charge it? The charger can be set for 12V, but only 2 or 10 amps. I don't care about the length of time it takes to charge it, only charging it safely so I can see if the battery and the device it's supposed to power still work.
Thanks.
It depends what the chemistry is.
If it is a lead-acid type, you can with 2A mode on your charger, but should watch it to prevent over charging.
If is is a "Nickle" or "lithium" based rechargeable pack, you need to use a special charger for it.
