how do you fix battery acid from a ray o vac lantern/flashlight? the ray o vac had batteries that stayed in there for five years and they leaked out a nightmare:Battery Acid! I'll describe it:

See if you can read the warranty on the battery. If it says that they will fix or replace any device that is damaged as a result of leakage, then I would contact them and send it back to them. I have done this for flashlights and other electronic devices, i.e. mailed it back to them (the batteries and the damaged device) with a letter of explaination or decription. They have always sent me back the replacement device or a credit for the purchase of another.

How do you fix an old 'Ray-o-vac' flashlight? How do you fix an old flashlight that, as far as I can tell, has nothing wrong with it? As far as I know, the light-bulb is new, the batteries are new, there are no dents or abrasions. It's an old Ray-o-Vac 2 cell stainless steel with a rivet logo on barrel, saying 'ray-O-vac stainless steel'. Does anyone have experiences with an old flashlight?
Four possible problems:
1 The bulb is bad. Even if you just bought it new yesterday, it could be defective. Take out the bulb, hold it up to a light. You'll be able to see the filament, a VERY thin (sometimes curly) wire inside the glass. If there is a break in it anywhere, even a small one, it's bad.
2 The batteries could be bad, even if they're new. Get a volt meter, and test them. 1.4 to 1.6 is good for AA, AAA, C, and D cells. ANything lower is bad. Also, make sure the flashlight doesn't take a special kind of battery that you don't have.
3 If the old batteries leaked, the contacts will be corroded, and that will stop it from working. Take another flashlight and shine it into the battery chamber. If there is any corrosion (bluish-grey splotches), you'll have to clean it out of there with vinegar and Q-tips.
4 There might be a problem with the wiring inside the flashlight. Check this as a last resort, 'cause it involves taking the whole thing about and checking the contacts.
