An Introduction to Methods and Models in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (Paperback)This unique textbook introduces undergraduate students to quantitative models and methods in ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation. It explores the core concepts shared by these related fields using tools and practical skills such as experimental design, generating phylogenies, basic statistical inference, and persuasive grant writing. And contributors use examples from their own cutting-edge research, providing diverse views to engage students and broaden their understanding. This is the only textbook on the subject featuring a collaborative "active learning" approach that emphasizes hands-on learning. Every chapter has exercises that enable students to work directly with the material at their own pace and in small groups. Each problem includes data presented in a rich array of formats, which students use to answer questions that illustrate patterns, principles, and methods. Topics range from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and population effective size to optimal foraging and indices of biodiversity. The book also includes a comprehensive glossary. In addition to the editors, the contributors are James Beck, Cawas Behram Engineer, John Gaskin, Luke Harmon, Jon Hess, Jason Kolbe, Kenneth H. Kozak, Robert J. Robertson, Emily Silverman, Beth Sparks-Jackson, and Anton Weisstein.Provides experience with hypothesis testing, experimental design, and scientific reasoning Covers core quantitative models and methods in ecology, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation Turns "discussion sections" into "thinking labs" Restricted instructor`s manual also available$29.35

Ski Mountains In New Jersey? Where can I find a Ski Mountain within 100 miles (preferably less) of Princeton, New Jersey? It doesn't have to be an awesome mountain, because we are intermediate skiers, but it cannot be a crappy mountain. Thanks for all the help, fellow skiing comrades. The poconos in PA or Mountain Creek (that used to be a water park). I have attached a link to NJ's website on skiing
Princeton, how can I get in? I know this is posted all the time, but I really need to know. I am a Sophomore from Northern Michigan, and I would like to attend Princeton University. Problem is, I have a 3.67. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to boost my chances.
My EC's
will have 4 years of model UN 3 years as a co-captain (have won a lot of awards)
will have 4 years debate 1-2 years cocaptain (awards)
4 years Spanish
taking hebrew at the temple
4 years Spanish club 1-2 years as a president
4 years nordic skiing, 3 years varsity 1 year co-captain
2 years varsity football
I have worked on many political campaigns, as well.
I forgot to put, I took one AP class this year (sophomores can only take world history) and am taking 2-3 next year and 2-3 senior year
I got to a public high school, but we have a fairly good academic reputation, but it is northern Michigan. I took one AP class this year (sophomores can only take world history) and am taking 2-3 next year and 2-3 senior year
Well, you need to raise your GPA to 3.8 and above.
Get 2200+ on the SAT
Take a plethora of APs and honors (the most rigorous classes available to you). You need to take more than 3 per year. I'm a freshman and even I already took an AP class (AP Human Geography). I'll be taking 2 as a sophomore. Get on my level ;)
Your extracurricular activities are in order
Volunteering never hurt anyone. Have over 100 community service hours
You don't need to go to a private school to make it into the Ivy League. If you check their websites, you'd see that most of their students (freshman class) came from public high schools.
http://www.princeton.edu/admission/applyingforadmission/admission_statistics/
May the force be with you.
Could I get into an Ivy League? I'm thinking of applying to Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton (along with many other non-Ivies), here are my credentials:
I am 16, a junior in high school in Oregon. I currently have a 4.00 cumulative GPA and am taking one AP class (the most a junior is allowed). I am way ahead on credits and I am taking Pre-Calculus (as an online class because I didn't have room for it in my schedule, but it is still a full year and gives me 1 full credit). I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet (doing those in May and April respectively) but I have taken several SAT practice tests that have been graded by my SAT tutor and my scores are consistently around 2100-2300. I am also taking an English SAT Subject Test in June, and a Math one next fall. I am very musically inclined and am first trombone in both the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble at my school. I am in my local community college jazz band as well, and I am principal trombone (first trombone) in the local Youth Symphony. I am not very athletic, but I am involved in two sports: tennis and ski team. I have been on the ski team since freshman year, but sadly, this was my last year on the team as it is far too expensive and time consuming and I will be very busy next year. As for tennis, this is my first year on the team and I am on Varsity; I will be doing tennis next year. At my school I am involved in a leadership program that aids and mentors freshman, and I am on the leadership team for my Small Learning Community. I am going to pack next year with classes, here i my schedule: Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, 4th year French, AP Literature, AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Government, and AP Economics. Unfortunately, my school only allows 7 classes per year so I must take the Economics class at the local community college this summer. I had 66 hours of community service this year and will have even more next year. As for my recommendations, the SAT tutor I mentioned was a professor at Columbia (my first college choice) for 15 years, then we was on the college board where he wrote questions for the SAT's; he really likes me and will give me a killer recommendation. I also am well liked by all of my previous teachers and will able to get good recommendation from any of them. Finally, (and I'm not sure how relevant this is) my mom just lost her job as an executive Vice President at Harry and David (a large food company), she was my family's primary source of income and now we are in a very bad financial situation. My mom will probably end up getting a job out of state and living where she works while my dad and I (I am an only child) live at my current home. Well, that's all I can think of now. I probably forget something so I will add something if I think of it. Let me know what you think and what advice you have. Be honest. Thanks
@Adrian, I actually forgot to mention that I'm planning on writing a novella for part of my senior project.
Yes, you have a chance, assuming that your test scores are high and that you continue to take the most challenging courses available. Play up the music (if you''ll forgive the pun), since it's really better to stand out in one area than simply to be a participant in a lot of activities.
Regarding your SAT tutor: I'm going to assume that he's a retired professor, since normally, someone with a tenured appointment at Columbia wouldn't be working as an SAT tutor. (Perhaps he was one of Columbia's non-tenured associate professors who was never considered for tenure?) Whatever the case, don't assume that a recommendation he writes would count for much of anything at Columbia. Your recommendations are really better coming from your teachers at your school, not from an SAT tutor. Sorry, but the teachers for specific courses at your school know you best, and they are the people from whom admissions officers want to hear.
Don't worry too much about sports. It's not absolutely necessary that you play a sport seriously; that's a misconception. Stick with the tennis, but it's not crucial.
Finally, admissions at the schools you mention are need-blind; if you are admitted, the financial aid offices will come up with the funds you need to attend. I bring this up because I don't think you want to make a big deal of your mother's job loss. The Ivies are going to be hearing TONS of stories like that for a couple of years to come (and they probably heard tons this past fall), so any essay in which you tried to include the information would not sound very original. They won't be considering your family financial information while deciding whether to admit you -- that will be an issue only later, if you ARE admitted.
Good luck to you. By the way, I'm quite familiar with Harry & David. My family has been buying fruit from the company for decades, and my mother used to send me boxes of it when I was in college and grad school. I'm sorry to hear that the company and your mother have suffered with the recession.
When does all-night skiing take place on Mt.Wachusett? I hear all night skiing is coming up in Mt.Wachusett in Princeton MA, when does this take place? I think its Feb 27 but im not sure i have always wanted to do that each year but i havent got a chance to i hear its mad fun tho
Ski Patrol at Wachusett Mt, MA? So right now I'm debating winter jobs, and came across ski patrol at Wachusett Mt. in Princeton, MA. I've snowboarded there for at least the last 10 years, and plan on going back this year a lot. I'm debating on buying a college student pass but realized I might get one with ski patrol. I am a Firefighter and EMT-B maybe 20 minutes away from the mountain, so I'm hoping that would help me get a job, however, I'm not sure what qualifies you for ski patrol.
So my question is my EMT going to cover the requirements?
Also, can you snowboard as ski patrol, cause I haven't actually skied in years?
And finally what are the working conditions?
Do you have a set number of times you have to go per month?
and can you go not as ski patrol, cause I usually end up in the terrain parks snowboarding.
Thank for your help. Sorry a ton of questions. Tried calling no one answered today. I'll try again soon.
You usually have to volunteer between 12-20 days a season, of course you have to train first, which usually takes 3/4ths of a season every weekend. I think your EMT might exempt you from the Outdoor Emergency Care training, but you still have to learn sleds and stuff, and then you usually end up shadowing a veteran patroller for the season.
It depends on the mountain whether you can board or not, some mountains only allow skiing patrolers.
Of course you can go when you're not on patrol, you even get a free pass, and can usually ski free in a ton of areas around the country. If you patrol you'll probably end up patrolling/training a lot more than skiing though, it's not something you'd do for a free pass.
Also, it's almost always a volunteer position, so if you're looking for it as a JOB, better reconsider
EDIT: the season in MA is very short though, so training might take more than a season or all season, I'm thinking of Colorado October-May season
How much more will it take to get into Princeton, UCLA, USC, or even HARVERD!!!??? I'm a senior waiting if I've been accepted to these colleges. I took a pre ap English course my freshman year...I took AP English all four years...(taking one right now), including AP US History my sophmore year, honors biology...started a club at my highschool - JSA (Junior States of America) - my junior year I took Ap World History, Honors Chemistry, AP Studio Art, AP English, and over the summer attended YALE...My senior year - now, I'm taking Honors Calculus, Honors Physics, AP Comp. & Literature, Ap Spanish IV, and honors government......on top of that I have maintained a 4.3, did 100 hours of community service, am on the varsity ski team...How much more do I have to do? On my SATs I got a 2330...on my ACTs I got a 33....WHAT MORE DO I NEED??? Do you think I'll be accepted to Harverd? Harvard and Princeton are too selective for anyone, even with a stellar record like yours, to be accepted without doubt. However, UCLA and USC are far less competitive, and I'm fairly certain you will get acceptance letters from them.
When are the pre-season ski sales (NYC)? Looking to buy a ski jacket & other apparel. I hear they have big sales in October or November? Princeton Ski Shops? can try here:http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkx9u9vtGi5UACgNXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE5NGluY3ZkBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0gwMjFfMTg4BGwDV1Mx/SIG=11c8djmue/EXP=1191004142/**http%3a//www.ski-blog.com/
UCLA, Princeton, STANFORD, YALE, USC, OR EVEN HARVERD? How much do I have to do to get into stanford or harverd, I scored a 2250 on my SATs! Over my years of highschool I have done AP World History, AP US History, AP Studio Art, AP Spanish IV, and all four years, (including now) AP English....Honors Biology, Honors Calculus, Honors Chemistry.....I have a 4.7, am getting A's in each of my classes. I did 100 hours of volunteer work, and am doing extra curriculum activities; I'm on the varsity ski team, and vasrsity Cross Country running. I attending Yale my Junior year summer; I was accepted because I started a club at my highschool that was not yet there, called JSA (Jouner states of ametica)-a political club. My 8th,9th, and 10 grade year I attending my local college to get credits....I'm am part of the Art Club, CSF(California Scholastic Federation), First Priority, and BLA (Business Leaders of America... WHAT MORE DO I NEED!!??
That sounds pretty good, although you have to realize that a 2250 at Harvard would be just average. One student I know who got into Harvard E.D. a few weeks ago had a 2400 and two 800s on advanced math SATs plus a bunch of other honors
Like other elite schools, Harvard, Stanford, Duke, etc get flooded with apps from kids who have great resumes. But they have to try to understand what a 4.7 means at your school. Some schools everybody takes AP and gets a way high GPA but when they take the AP tests, few of them pass. Other schools there are only a few AP classes and so kids rarely get GPAs over 4, but everyone gets 5 on the exam. So which is better?
I have heard quite a few admissions officers say, they want people who have done a great job in a few activities, not someone who who has had a lot of activities.
What National awards have you done? What have you done to win State honors? Soloist at your local professional symphony? Olympic team alternate? National Math team candidate? Sicence Olympiad National medal? US Amateur Sports national level competitor? Published author of a best seller.
What makes you better than the 10,000 other kids who have 4plus GPAs and their name listed in a lot of clubs in the yearbook?
Can i get into Princeton or UPenn? I am a sophomore
GPA- 3.73 unweighted (idk what it is weighted)
