Just Curious as I saw The Academy last year and noticed that they were training with the PR-24 rather than the ASP expandable Batons. Well they all have their pros and cons!
Straight Wood:
PROS= Light, inexpensive, makes a satisfying THWOP sound on a perp, not likely to cause unintentional damage. Easy to clean with bleach. Fun to point at people and say "BACK UP, DIRTBAG..."
CONS = Very large...hard to run, hop fences, sit in a vehicle, or wrestle someone to the ground with one unless you have it in your hand.
2)PR-24 Side Handle:
PROS = Easy to trip, grab and choke with. Also a good defensive piece. Sturdy, not likely to break across someone's temple. Also not likely to be effective in the hands of a non-trained user, so if for god knows what reason you lose control of it, you're likely to have the facility to pump several rounds into the guy's legs and stomach before he lands a worthy hit on you with it.
CONS= Awkward and bulky when holstered.
3) Expandable AKA Tactical or ASP
PROS = Very easy to run with in stowed position. Easy to carry multiple units. (I've seen some officers carry 2)
CONS= After many good hard beatings, telescoping flutes can become bent, making it difficult to collapse/expand...Expensive to replace. Also, about as intimidating looking as brandishing an oversize car radio antennae, so you're likely to have to tap the guy a few times before he understands you're playing for keeps. Also, typically you need to use along with another weapon like pepper spray, because it's relatively heavy and demands a large swing radius.
4) Expandable with Side Handle
PROS = Damn intimidating!!! and can deliver one hell of a skull crushing battle. Choke, drag, crush, pulverize that low life scumbag!!!
CONS = Pretty inadequate for defence, you never know when the little bastard will shorten up on you. Prone to damage and expensive to replace. Also, incriminating blood and brain evidence can reside unseen in the telescoping flutes. Heavy as hell to carry around, it's like having to carry an extra gun that doesn't even shoot!

You can keep it in the front of the car or the back. As a Missouri Police Officer, if I pulled you over and saw one sitting in your seat I wouldn't be worried. For one, I have a metal collapsible baton and for two I've been trained to use both. You may have officers ask you about it though.

Are impact weapons being underutilized by law enforcement today? I have recently seen several situations where officers risked (and received) unnecessary injury to themselves because of a reluctance to use, or lack of a baton. It is uncommon to see a PR 24 being carried anymore, and many of the flashlights are useless for anything but light.The ASP is much carried and little deployed. Is this a nation-wide trend? If so, is it due to political considerations (Rodney King) or the availability of other less-lethal weapons? How is this generation being trained in the use batons? Will they ever bring back the 7-C cell Maglight ( a comfort, night or day)? Well I carried a K lite long before Mag. I carried a Mag star for years because it was the brightest. Not because it was useful as an impact weapon. By the time I retired I was carrying a little Streamlite stinger. Wow I actually had it with me when I needed it and it did not go flying out of the belt ring when I ran after someone like full sized lights did.
Even though I was qualified with and often carried a collapsible I rarely used it.
I liked the wooden baton but not to use as an impact weapon but as a poker and threat.
Bottom line I found impact weapons to be useless most of the time. Despite what everyone is taught about the sympathetic nervous system in a real dynamic situation with adrenaline pulsing and drugs changing physical perceptions impact weapons do not work as well as advertised.
They do work in a beat down once a bad guy is down but a beat down is really useless and illegal.

In North Carolina, What are the laws regarding the possession of less than lethal personal protection devices? Devices, such as ASP/collapsible batons, fixed length batons (pr-24), OC/mace pepper spray, and even handcuffs? And yes I know that possessing them on government property is illegal for my wife, the pr-24 is just because I have one and was trained with it, loved using it way back when and prefer it to asps I am glad to be of help to someone wishing to protect themselves.
North Carolina weapon law (§ 14‑269, see link)
hinges more strongly on your INTENT than simply possessing something.
First off, note possession on your own property is not illegal for anything.
Pepper Spray is legal. No mention of it anywhere in the law, and it is widely accepted as legal for citizens because it is not designed to kill or cause lasting injury.
There is no prohibition against tasers or contact stun guns, though I do not recommend them for civilians because their pretty useless in self-defense.
Nothing that even vaguely resembles ASPs and PR-24s (or similar) are mentioned in the law. While it does say "other deadly weapon of like kind," that might be a hard-sell to a judge. Furthermore, the statute allows you the defense that you had a legitimate purpose (self-defense) and that you did not use the weapon to commit a crime. Behave yourself, don't be an aggressive jerk and you'll be fine. Though I'd argue that a PR-24 is huge and rather hard to conceal, and if you carrying openly, you could be accused of menacing, causing alarm, or impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Handcuffs technically aren't weapons, so they're legal to possess. Store security carry them all the time. When I worked as a store detective, I was forbidden from having any weapons, or even knives, but I had cuffs.
However, a caveat: Do not carry handcuffs unless you are a guard. While legal, if your not using them for work, you will raise loads of suspicion that you are either a vigilante, a cop-impersonator, or a robber plotting a home-invasion. Possession of handcuffs alongside a baton and pepper spray is going to really raise eyebrows on any cop, and may even get you arrested depending on the circumstances. Further, it's pretty stupid to try and arrest a person who just attacked you. Better to get the hell out of there once he's been subdued and call the cops.
