About bike police bikes.....? is it illegal for someone to have the lights and sirens on a bike patrol bicycle? I know it's legal to own a police bike, with the logo of 'police' on the bike and the bike bag, but what about the lights and siren? You would be crossing over in to that area of impersonating a police officer with a red and blue light set up. Needless to say police officers usually treat people crossing that line personally.

Oceanside Police Motorcycle Cop pulled me over on my Bike, took my keys and threw them and LOST THEM. Legal? Yes no San Fransisco Police Department markings on the person or bike just curvilain clothes with a 30 ltr pack. He had Niterider Digital police system lights flashing blue and red, siren screaming and a very bright tail light. He was heading towards Golden gate brigde in a hurry. Do police bike patrol do undercover work, its very unusal to see them without hi viz markings, looked very strange indeed. Bike Patrols must be properly marked and the users must be in proper uniforms and only undercover agents are authorized not to have signs and civilian clothes.

I live in CA and have a Kawasaki Police motorcycle with working yellow and white strobes installed. The bike also has working electronic air horn and siren system. There are no police badging and I do not dress or act like a cop, never turn the lights or sirens on, wear a normal harley helmet...etc. Can I be pulled over just or riding normally? Can I be cited for riding this bike? I know yellow and white strobes are legal for civilian use, but what about having a siren installed? Any insight would be appreciated...

Okay Im hearing that the bike is legit but the siren is a problem. The siren also has a electronic air horn which is the bikes only available horn. If i disable the siren completely I will not have use of any horn. Will this excuse fly when being pulled over? I literally "never" turn on the police siren part but use the electronic horn as the normal bike horn.

Bikes have several advantages...
They are a good community policing tool, as you can interact easier with the public.
The are also quieter, you can sneak up on a potential lawbreaker, especially at night.
Just knowing the bike patrol is out is a deterrent for a lot of people.
They can go many places squads can not, such as bike trails, walking paths, parks, etc.
They are very effective in chasing an offender on a bike, a squad is limited if they cut through yards. They are also very effective chasing someone who flees on foot.
The two big disadvantages are you are not a mobile so it takes you longer to get somewhere, and you can not carry a lot of supplies with you. If they are used to supplement road patrol, a squad is never far away.
They do sell lights and sirens for bike patrol, but I haven't seen many with them. The link shows a combination light/siren.

I too will use the NightRider Digital Patrol Light System but with no Blue or red Reflectors. Re-guarding a Siren not a good Idea. You can use the Horn portion but the Wail and Yelp might bring you a noise pollution ticket. Blue lights are a Big no!!! No!!! in California! If you are in NY or any other State I am not sure. BACKGROUND ON THE DAVID BISARD CASE: At 11:20 am on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police cruiser driven by Officer David Bisard plowed into a group of four riders on three motorcycles stopped at a red light. One rider was killed, and two others critically injured. A blood test indicated Bisard was drunk and he was initially charged with seven DUI related felonies. But those chargers were later dropped because the blood test had been mishandled and no other evidence supported the DUI charge. ABOUT THE VICTIMS: Indianapolis resident Eric Wells, 30, (left) was fatally injured when the police cruiser driven by Bisard struck his motorcycle from behind, hurling him forward against other vehicles stopped at the light. Wells worked at the US Defense Finance center in Lawrence, as did Mary Mills, 47, and Kurt Weekly, 44, both of Indianapolis, and George Burt, 52, Fishers. And this AM, from my house, I can hear the clanks and thuds of the scaffolders and builders carrying on with the work they ve been doing at a house on my road for the last month, as if nothing has happened.
