Was it necessary a Police car stop me just because I did not have a light on my bicycle? This happen @ night? I was getting off at work & it was late night time. I was riding my bicycle on the sidewalk & the police car pull me over. When I get off my bicycle, the 2 police office made a scene & with a big smile on there faces. Once police officer he ask me for my ID? The 2nd police officer he questions who I am & what I do? They both say that I need to have a light for my bicycle? They also wear I was going & I told them I was heading back home.I was also not wearing a helmet either & the police officer he never mention it? My question is, were those cops doing there job or were they dicks? No they didn't give me a ticket & thank God. They treat me like if I was a gangster & I was wearing my restaurant uniform. Sounds like both, doing their job and dicks. You do need a light on your bike at night, even on the sidewalk. You should get one for your own safety. But where you were going was NONE of their business. Cops are getting by with more and more crap these days. I hope you didn't get a ticket.
What are the rules of law concerning bicycle riding in los angeles? Most of the time I get stop'd by the police; on my bicycle they tell me it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk and without a light. They tell me that I have to ride in the bike lane, which there are not many in greater Los Angeles. I think they are profiling me; they always search my knapsack and my pockets and my I.D.! But they never give me a ticket; if I have broken the law? The laws are the bicycle is a vehicle and subject to EXACTLY the same laws as any other vehicle.

Do police enforce trafic laws for bicycle riders? I often see large groups of riders on backroads and most of the time they do not yield to cars and they run red lights instead of breaking up the group. Most do not obey traffic laws by passing cars at stoplights and rolling through intersections when they do not have the right of way. But I've neve seen police officers stop them. They seem to look the other way. Just mostly at night for the riders safety :)

Which is better on a bicycle, flashing lights (front and rear) or steady lights? I live and cycle in London - the funny thing is that the TfL hire bikes use flashing red and white lights, but I have also seen police bicycles and they use steady lights... So I'm curious, which is better?
I hear that a steady light might confuse drivers and other cyclists who might think you're on a motorbike and therefore misjudge your speed - which can be dangerous...
On the other hand, a flashing light might be quite irritating to other road users...

I always use two lights front and rear, and I have one set to flash, and the other set to steady.
A flashing light is probably more noticeable that a steady one, but if you need to use the front light to see where you're going, then obviously solid is better.
As you say, a flashing light can be annoying, but that means that it gets noticed, and that is the whole purpose of having lights when riding around a city.
At times I have to cycle along roads without street lighting, and then I set both front lights to steady, but leave one of the rear lights on flash so that it stands out more.
Does anyone know where i can purchase the spotlights they put on police helicopters? When i search on yahoo i only get the nightsun bicycle lighting company. The one im talking about is a 30 million candlepower remote controlled searchlight. You could always check the police/law enforcement auction for curiosities like that. You also might want to look into companies that distribute spotlights for theatres, they might have one with the specs youre looking for.
