petzl climbing harness? I'm normal leasure gym climber (can climb with some pain 5.11b in the gym). I'm still on my first harness I bought when I started climbing 4 years ago .... I'm thinking to get new harness only for gym climbing and I really don't think I need to spend $80 on Black Diamond super awesome harness simpy because I won't be sitting on the wall for 4 hours, I really want to use it in the gym only. Maybe I don't get it, but why this harness would not do better job in the gym than any other pro harness? This is really simple comfortable easy to pack harness, what else do you need in the gym? When I look in the gym, everybody has expensive harness, almost nobody uses something simple like this. http://en.petzl.com/petzl/SportProduits?Produit=553# thanks jiri Dave, every single harness out there from good brand is "gym" secure, this question is really not about security in the gym... did you see the harness you can rent in the gym? Why would they rent it to you if it would not be secured... You are right, the difference in price is due to padding, extra gear loops, and sometimes the name. If you only plan on doing gym climbing you can get a pretty inexpensive one, if you climb a variety of venues you might climb in the gym with a really expensvie harness just so you don't have to own two of them.
Petzl-Grigri after how much time and after how many climbs should one not use it? I was going to buy a used petzl-grigri, and the user says they have had it for 10 years and climbed with it for one full trad season and a dozen times indoor. Is this still good for some heavy sport climbing, or should I just suck it up and buy a new one? And more generally, how old and worn is too old and worn when it comes to a grigri?
In with my 7 years of experience working at a boyscout climbing wall I have been told hundreds of times to never never ever buy used climbing gear because you never know how or if the seller has damaged it in any way. Also ten years is a long time no matter how many times it has been used.
Bottom line I say buy a new one.
Which belay device should i get : the ATC Guide or the Petzl Reverso? I need a good belay device and i dont know which one to get It depends on what you use it for. I have both and I really prefer the ATC Guide. It feeds more smoothly, has more control, and works better with skinny (8mm) ropes. The Reverso is a little lighter and is easier for some people to unlock if you need to lower your second. If you plan to do a lot of alpine climbing where ounces count then go with the Reverso, otherwise stick to the ATC Guide. Two other benefits of the Guide - it's more solid and will wear out more slowly, and because it still looks like a standard tube style belay device it's easier for other people to use - it seems to be more intuitive.
