Life at the United States Military Academy? What kind of haircuts are you allowed to have? How long can you grow out your hair? How do you study at night? Do you have to go to sleep or can you stay up and study, w/ a flashlight at least? Can you bring personal items? Do they go through your things when you get there? How often do you get breaks to do what you want to do? Do you share showers/ bathrooms or do you get some privacy? I'm sure you can find most of that at the West Point website. But, I've had two friends who went there, and I'll tell you this: You will hate your first year with a burning passion you can't imagine. It slowly gets better, until you love your senior year with vigor.
They break you down, and build you back up the way they want.
Just wait for the first day, and the lines.

What are the uses for the colored lenses in a military anglehead flashlight? I just bought one and I don't know what the different colors symbolize. The red light is used to prevent you from losing you natural night vision. Using White light to read a map or something would ruin that and you couldn't see anything after you look away. Also unless your looking directly at the light source, red light is invisible to night vision goggles, so if the enemy is using them they cannot see the light. As for the blue light, most of the time its used to lay out a landing zone for tactical drop or MEDIVAC. And white of course is used when you need to see good in an un-tactical environment.

How are the different colored lenses on military flashlights used? I've seen blue,red,green,amber and clear lenses on the flashlights but I don't know why you would use the other ones some of them are used for signaling specific messages to your team but we rarely ever do that anymore. For the most part you will only ever use 3 of those lenses. I use the red one for map reading at night time. The white one deminished light. The blue one for tracking.

Military angle flashlights, why the angle? Does anybody know why military flashlights have an angle and are not straight like civilian flashlights. The design goes back many, many years, They must have had some reason why they made them with an angle. Becuase they are made to hang off of the H harness that conects to your combat belt. With the angle you can turn the flashlight on and have it shine straight ahead and allows you the use of both of your hands still.

were can i buy a US MX-991/U military Flashlight 1986? surefire also makes several different types, but they use batteries really fast. they are extremely bright though. i have a handheld one and the beam is effective about 50 yards away and farther.
but again if ur just going nostalgic, then any surplus store will have them.

On a military flashlight, what do the different lens covers mean? I know red is for night operations and blue is for medical emergency. The "rippled" cover (just a guess) is to disperse the light. What is the solid white one for? In night ops or flight ops the use of light and what colors is usually spelled out or specified. Along with this the use of various colors of lenses allow you to see and detect certain things when looking at something without disrupting your natural ability to see at night as well as when night vision goggles are being used in that area. Green light for instance is good for medical and medics as it allows you to distinguish blood from other fluids and treat a wounded or injured person more easily than other colors. Blue light is used for detecting solvents and certain chemicals and distinguishing those from fuel or gasoline that is leaking or spilled. Along with these types of uses a blinking or solid color light can signal someone down the line or some distance away a certain pre agreed on message when you do not want to use voice communication or it is to noisy to.

Can you put a LED bulb in a military angle head flashlight? my flashlight is not that bright

Red Flashlights & The Military.............?? Why is it that when you're in the field...you have to have a red flashlight(red light)? Is it so the enemy can't see you? I mean someone is gonna see a red light just like they see a white light regardless. Why don't they just have green flashlights(green lights) in the military when you go to the field? It seems better since you & your uniform is green(Marines or Army)..so the light can blend in alittle...rather then the red flashlight. Take a red covered lens flashlight and a regular flash light. Turn them both on at night and set them on the ground. Walk away until you cannot see one of the flashlights. I bet it's the red lens one that you can't see first. It puts out less light to the naked eye.

Keeping gear after retiring from the military? Hey i was wanting to join the 75th ranger regiment and i was thinking, when my military career is over, what all am i allowed to keep? Some of my buddies said that i can keep my helmet. the only thing I know that i can't keep is my gun. But could i keep my vest if i take out the Kevlar plates, or can i keep all the attachments on my gun like scopes, flashlights,laster, and foregrips? The real answer is whatever you buy you keep, whatever Uncle Sam gives you he wants back. You will get a few little things along the way but nothing major. If you make a career of the service or at least serve a couple of enlistments you inadvertently end up with a few goodies more by accident than anything.
Edit: You DO have to turn your helmet back in. They issue you a sweat band that goes inside it and that is yours to keep. Everytime you change posts you have to turn in your helmet but you keep your sweatband to put in the helmet you get issued at your next unit. If it gets to worn out YOU have to buy a new one. They do give you an anual allowance to pay for that kind of stuff and uniforms, boots, etc.

Why is the Military flashlight an upside down L-shape? What was the reasoning behind this design? In addition to the other answers - you can set it on its base and have it illuminate whatever you are doing without anybody having to hold it.
