FLYING FROM MY MIND: Innovative and Record-breaking Microlight and Aircraft...This fascinating story begins in 1973 when David Cook built a glider in an attempt to win the Selsey Birdman Rally - an annual event where all types of creations are launched from the end of Bognor Pier. Between 1975 and 1977 he won every National and International hang gliding competition entered and then in 1977 he designed and built a power unit for his glider. In 1978 he became the first and lowest-powered microlight to cross the English Channel. His successes in this venture led to sponsorship from Duckhams Oil and there followed a period of demonstration flights at major air shows. In 1982 he designed a microlight called Shadow and in 1983 it took the FIA world speed and distance records for the class. In 1992 he took the aircraft to 23600ft to claim the world altitude record for the class, beaten later by himself in a newly designed Streak to 27150 ft. David started a company to build the Shadow in 1984 and has demonstrated its remarkable flying abilities around the world, during which time he had many amusing and some exciting experiences. In 1987 the Shadow won the British Design Award. Promise Angels is dedicated to bringing you great books at great prices. Home built ultra(or micro) light aircraft i want to know what some of the most simple-as ultralight aircraft around some thing like the "weedhopper" basically a seat and wings. also where can i get plans Contact EAA.org, and join the EAA. Their magazines list the current crop of Light Sport Aircraft. If you are American, constrain your search for homegrown planes. We are at a disadvantage buying planes from abroad. Give the Cessna China-built plane a pass.
I am living in the UK (Northern Ireland) and I would like to do my Private Pilot license.? What is the best way for me to go about getting my license? I don't mind traveling abroad but it would have to be quite cheap. It needs to be under about £5000 and I have access to helicopters (R22/R44) and a light aircraft (Piper Tripacer) but I would also consider doing my National License in a micro light, any tips??
I'm 13 and learning to fly in Hawarden NE wales. I would suggest going to a local airfield and asking for a quote to do within 1 yr if you come to Hawarden and were doing it in 1 yr it would cost £5542.50 this includes 45 Hours Flight Training, 12 Months Membership, ID Card, Pre and Post Flight Briefings, 1st Attempt at the 6 Main Ground Exams and the Skills Test Fee (JAR PPL). Their website is www.nwcas.co.uk.
But you can get good deals by going to Florida US and get the JAR PPL there.
Where can I learn to build my own aircraft? I've recently attended the Farnborough Air show. I heard on their radio that there was some sort of initiative to interest school kids in engineering by getting them to build an airplane, which will undergo checks and then- all of the kids will get to fly it. I though this was just grand! Does anyone know if there's something like this for adults (i'm just out of uni)?
I wouldn't mind if I had to pay to get involved- I know air plane parts don't grow on trees. If I could get involved in building a small propeller aircraft like a micro light it'd be amazing!
I agree with WarBird Pilot -- EAA -- The Experimental Aircraft Association - www.EAA.org
But I will expand on that with some more info -- including some specific to the UK (I'm guess that you're from there attending the Farnborough - but this also applies if elsewhere):
There are about 170,000 EAA members world-wide and while I don't see any EAA chapters (search at: http://www.eaa.org/chapters/locator/ ) in the UK (if that's where you're from), I'll bet you can connect up with others building homebuilt/custom/kit-built aircraft in your area. Offer to lend someone a hand with their building -- learn not only what's involved in building your own aircraft, but you'll be able to find out if you like it before spending lots of money on a kit.
It's a little late for this year, but you should DEFINTELY go to AirVenture !! www.AirVenture.org -- EAA's annual event (which starts tomorrow, 26 July, 2010 and runs through 1 August, 2010). It's the Mecca of aviation -- with almost every homebuilt known -- plus warbirds, ultralights, classic aircraft and more ... From their media advertising rates PDF:
The World ’s Greatest Aviation Celebration
> 540,000 people attended AirVenture 2009
> 750 Exhibitors
> 907 Members of the Press
> 10,000+ Aircraft
> 41,000 Campers
> 5,500 Volunteers
There is even a place where international visitors gather...
http://www.airventure.org/attractions/international.html
In 2009, the AirVenture website say there were 2,182 registered visitors from 75 countries (outside the USA), including 58 from England.
You should ALSO check out the info at: www.Oshkosh365.org -- a website set up by EAA where you can ask even more detailed aviation questions than this Yahoo answers provides. For instance, I looked up: EAA UK and found this info for you to pursue:
http://www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk/ Website of the Light Aircraft Association in the UK.
You should consider reaching out to others where you live via Oshkosh365.
If you join EAA, you can even watch the webcams (just went live yesterday) at the EAA Members Only section of www.Oshkosh365.org
AND: ------ I'd suggest you go to your local airport -- a SMALLER airport -- NOT a big commercial airport. Find one which gives flight lessons in small planes. ASK someone if they know of anyone who has built or is building their own plane and how you can meet up with them. DON'T let anyone discourage you -- Thousands of people build their own aircraft -- including in the UK. The rules may vary from country to country, but it's doable -- to achieve your dream !
BTW -- I'm an equal builder (with my husband) of a RotorWay helicopter -- which I know are big in the UK. Here is the link to the RotorWay UK website -- check it out -- maybe you'll get hooked on helicopters and build one for yourself !! btw - My only logged time is rotorcraft and I love it!
I hope you achieve your dreams -- and that I'll see you next year at AirVenture (I already have my reservation in the dorm). Mark the date: 25-31 July, 2011 -- Start your planning NOW !!
Aerodynamic lift of blades of a helicopter? There really isn't a category for this but there should be one for R/C aircraft. I have the micro helicopters and am considering making the blades.
It's a simple matter to reproduce the angle and cover it with the vinyl material for this purpose.
They make carbon composite blades for strength and lightness. They also make blades out of balsa because it's light and cheap. I'm considering using a hardwood. Considering how well that terns out as a start, the balsa wood is pretty cheap to buy. Basically, one has to have a table saw and router to create this little blades. I think the extra weight of the hardwood won't keep it from getting off the ground.
I'm wondering about altering the design. What I'm thinking of doing, is making the blades shorter so that they have less lift and the response will be slower and less prone to over-flying, just for learning.
I believe that if I made the blades wider and/or longer, it would be more for the motor to turn.
This little piece of machinery is quite advanced and quite responsive. In learning how to to control it, if it tips over a bit and touches the ground, there goes the blades.
Therefore, wanting to create blades that are less responsive and barely able to give it lift off the ground.
I know they make they things in ratios for a reason, I hadn't considered over reving the main motor.
But, I guess, it'll be an experiment in model technology. BTW, last I heard, someone was working on a R/C model of the Harrier jet with ducted fan little jet engines.
Helicopter blades are just wings flying in a circle. So, the same things that apply to wings apply to helicopter blades.
Long, thin blades will have a higher efficiency (lift-to-drag ratio), but long, thin blades are of course not as sturdy, so it is important to use a strong material.
The responsiveness of the motor will depend on the moment of inertia of the blades, and if you keep the mass of each blade the same while making them shorter, the responsiveness will be increased, due to the smaller moment of inertia.
The question is will the smaller moment of inertia be outweighed by the loss in efficiency? Only experimentation (or computational fluid dynamics) can tell for sure.
Some questions about aviation (PPL)? I'm 15, nearly 16 and I've been interested in planes for a long time. I do not want to be a commercial pilot, just a private pilot or what ever it's called.
I have a few questions that I would like to ask, some that Google cannot answer.
Firstly, I'd like to know what the cheapest sort of light aircraft is priced at. I was thinking micro light fixed wing but I think they cost around 3,000+. Same with Cessna's, what's the cheapest model?
What is everyone elses experiences? When did you start your interest in aviation (age-wise), when and how much your first aircraft was.
I love the way Gyroplanes work but I cannot seem to find any decent information about them or how much they are priced ect...
Also do I have to get a licence? Because people drive around in cars without passing their driving test, but aslong as they have someone in the car with them (permit I think ts called) .. I live in Norfolk, UK in the countryside if that helps.
Thanks
You want to be a PPL in UK - Best advice - join a little aero-club -
Hopefully, with "real" airplanes - DH-82 Tiger Moth or SV4 Stampe -
Most people in USA do not even know what these are -
They should be jealous of your luck to fly these -
The problem, flying in UK is rather expensive -
If you think doing a PPL - your first step will be train to your first solo -
Then later, when you finances are good again, complete the PPL training -
Best place is the club house -
Free ground briefing from old time instructors -
But will cost you a few Harp Lagers -
Give us a plan on a build for an aluminium framed micro light aircraft, as seen in weekend Daily Telegraph new Did not see the daily telegraph but you can contact your local EAA or the head quarters in Oshkosh, WI - they can point you to libraries of plans - happy flying

The fuselage is inspired by the real world famous MD500, you always see this in News or some war zone. The Bravo SX is very well made, you put this on your desk and it becomes a very good piece for display. For those who are not familiar with the Solo Pro platform, it is the best choice after playing a Co Axial Helicopters, it has a Fixed Pitch one piece main rotor, easy to install, hard to break, and most of all, it has the Bell Rotor Head design, the whole Heli body is very light weight, making it very durable in a crash, the simple mechanism also makes it great for beginners. www.helipal.com
