Where can I get a red lens for my mini Maglite? I'm trying to get a few things together for a basic astronomy setup, and I need a red light that doesn't ruin my night vision. I've found a lot of red lenses for mini Maglites on the internet, and they're really cheap ($0.75), but I don't want to pay $5 in shipping for a 1-inch circle of plastic. Is there a major hardware or electronics chain that would sell them? I would try a local theater supply store - the stage lights that they use have replaceable colored plastic (I believe these are called "gels" in the industry). You should be able to buy a red one for next to nothing and cut hundreds of those little red lenses out of it. Or keep the rest in case you ever break a tail light!

Do police officers that use MagLites usually use 4 cell or 6 cell MagLites?
The D 6 cells were way too heavy for regular use. D 4 were OK. C cells were always easier to use 4 or 6 cell.
The Mag Star which is rechargeable and very bright was the size of a 4 D cell. OK to handle but a pain after a while, especially when on foot patrol.
We have went over to small lights that are more powerful and ca be carried easily, so you always have a light. We also went to collapsible batons so you did not need a 6 cell. The batons work better than the 6 cells anyway, better balance.
The original heavy duty aluminum police light was not Mag but K-Lite. (same designer)

How many lumens for a camping/survival torch? I need a bright torch for going into the forests at night etc.
I have seen a few maglites and other brands that are considered good but I'm not sure about the lumens rating. I need something that has a wide beam and a focus mode.
A Mini Mag-Lite is about 8 to 10 lumens with fresh batteries. The other size Mag-Lites aren't well suited for use in the woods.
You can do far better than Mag-Lites today. When I'm traveling the forest at night I wear a Petzl Tikka Plus LED headlamp (13/53 lumens for 150/120 hours, $35), which gives a nice spread and range for just walking around (I usually keep it on low), and also carry a Fenix PD30 R5 LED flashlight (11/75/140/265 lumens for 65/9/4/1.5 hrs, $65) for spot work.
If those prices are out of reach, you can find a decent LED headlamp at Walmart for around $20 and an LED flashlight for around $30. LED's are the key for high brightness and long runtimes.
For best performance, use only Lithium batteries (Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA or AAA).
What is a good type of flashlight? I'm looking for a really good flashlight under $30.00. I dont care about the different color lights or anything but if it has it thats fine. Do u think maglites are just heavy, overpriced flashlights? They are worth every penny you pay for them.I currently own two of them one is 8 years old and in my husbands work truck and he has put lots of abuse of it.I was using it as a house flashlight but after going through a camping lantern style flask light every 6 months I bought a new one for the house and he took it to work.We have replace the bulbs and lens beside the batteries(witch is normal).I have had my other one for 3 years.I am planning on buying two more in the next couple of weeks.One 4 d LED for myself(The more batteries the bigger/brighter the light is) and either a regular 4 D for my husbands truck or a 2 d for my 7 year old daughter for the woods.My friends brother has had the same one for 25 years and they recently bought their first two and plan on buying at least one more.
