If you want a decent head lamp, go to Target. They have one by Energizer that is very bright, uses AA batteries. 3w LED. Don't remember the name of it but the package is black, blue and silver. Good light but no waterproof.
If you want a hand held light, go to Costco. They have a 2 light pack, 3 or 5w LED, 210 lumes, uses AAA batteries, for $20. Ive had a few for about 4 months no, use them every day, and no problems!
If you want water proof stuff look at Petzl, Princeton Tec, or get on a caving gear web site.

What's a good flashlight to keep in the car? I'm looking for a bright flashlight that I can keep in my car should I ever have something come up like something with the car so I can see underneath and look under the hood and see if anything is wrong. It could potentially be used at some distance as well but the use of the light would be based solely on how well it does it (So if it works great only at doing what I originally said that's fine, but something that will work long distances too would be nice).
I've seen those little rechargable ones you shake - they're not very bright. I don't care if it's LED or a traditional bulb, but I know the LEDs are better on battery life and I would like whatever flashlight I get to have the best battery life considering it will sit in the car for a long time and be exposed to hot and cold temperatures (Inside a center console compartment). I currently have a 2 D cell Maglite and I'm very pleased with the brightness but it's far too large to store in the center console and even if I could fit it I imagine the batteries would die too quickly.
A key point also, the cheaper the better. I know Surefire makes a very nice Defender LED light that's rated at 120 lumens but it's $150. The ideal price range would be $20 or less but I could possibly go a little more. I had considered one of those mini-Maglites with the 3 Watt Luxeon LED that take 3 AA batteries (Which is $20) but I would like to know if there are any other options that are good or better than that since most of what I know about flashlights is about Maglites.
Your best bet is a headlamp, no need to hold the flashlight in your hands. They`re just as bright as maglites, they`re waterproof, and can even be less expensive. They`re great for working on cars because you dont need to balance a flashlight on your engine or under your car, where you look is where the light will shine and both hands are free to do anywork needed on your car. They`re also small enough to keep in the center console or glove box and are just as bright as the large maglites.
Check out Blackdiamond Headlamps, Petzl, Princeton Tec all are brand names and have head lamps ranging from $15 to $100.

what is the Lumens on a maglite mini 2 AA? I need to know how many lumens the bulb is.
The spec sheet for the mini maglite 2 AA says up to 2,952 candlepower. See the first web site below.
According to the second web site below, one candlepower equivalent equals 12.57 lumens.
So 2,952 candlepower would be about 36,100 lumens.
Lumens of light output? I have a AA 3W Mini Maglite. Looking at more flashlights now and I see a 60 lumen light output and 120... etc...
just wondering if anybody knew what the "lumen light output" was for this flashlight, looked on the website with no such luck of finding out.

It is about ~50 lumens.
It's not the brightest flashlight by any means, but it is enough for most people. Plus it is made in the USA, and there are not very many AA lights that are.
