Frank, my trail guide and friend, alerts me with the sound of a mitten against the side of my tent. “Jambo rafiki!” It is eleven o’clock at night, and I’ve been anxiously staring into the dark and listening to the occasional “nevermore” of a white-necked raven. The ravens were always at the next camp, always hovering above, as if they followed my journey. Would they climb with me tonight? I fumble around outside of my sleeping bag, searching for my headlamp. Finally finding the elastic strap underneath my camelback, I illuminate my rented tent—thin walls of weathered nylon sheltering me from the harsh climate of Mt. Kilimanjaro. I put on two extra pairs of wool socks, three heavy t-shirts, my fleece jacket, windbreaker, and the pair of khaki hiker pants I’ve worn for the past three days. Finally, I slip my balaclava over my numb cheeks and patiently drink a cup of peppermint tea, eagerly awaiting the new challenge. It’s my fifth day on the mountain, the first without my dad. He and I have been on the Machame route, a path famous for it’s difficulty and scenery: first rainforest, next heather, then brushland, and now the lunar surface of the alpine desert. By the time we had reached Baranco Wall, my dad’s mountain sickness had become a serious issue. When we reached Karanga Camp that night, despite my insistence that he continue with me, he had already decided to start down in the morning. I remember the air feeling thinner with each step I took—whether it was mountain sickness or my dad’s absence, I cannot say. This mountain had been his idea. Frank and I left the camp, packs in tow and headlights on. Even if my ravens had followed me, I could never have seen them during that lightless night. Instead I saw silhouettes of abandoned stretchers ominously scattered along the path and came to a chilling conclusion—I was alone, carrying a dream of my Father’s. I began, randomly, even humbly, shouting at the ridges and glaciers—just to hear the echo. My feet and I would climb. Kili and the night would remain indifferent. Like life, mountains don’t care whether you live, die, succeed, or fail—they just provide the challenge. I longed to blend into the African sky, to reach Uhuru peak. Uhuru means freedom in Swahili, a quaint irony I thought, as I hiked on without my dad, without the comforts and concerns of my past. I was in the present on that mountain and chose to embrace this loneliness—this freedom. Frank and I wound back and forth, up and…up. After persistently asking Frank what fraction we had shaved off the monstrous climb, he told me we had reached Stella Point—and had an hour more to go. Exasperated and winded, I turned to look down at what had been and saw a blanket of clouds mere feet below. It was as if Kilimanjaro had casually erased my past; but what did that matter? Isn’t it just as beautiful that we can forget as we can remember? I was above the clouds and I intended to tread above them as long as possible. I intended to tread to the top. At 6:12 AM I turned the corner of what must have been the 1,000th boulder that night. Illuminated by the rising sun, a large wooden sign sporadically stamped with stickers and emblems from all over the world came into my view. The uppermost words were “Congratulations, you are now at Uhuru Peak, Tanzania, 5895 M. AMSL” Laughing at how absurdly beautiful the sunrise, the crystalline glaciers, that sign, and the entire view of Tanzania were, I ran. I ran to that signpost and slapped the word Uhuru like it was the bottom of a newborn child. I had found freedom. you definitely need to add more descriptive words, try not to make it so story-ish...
