Led Zeppelin - Who is the old man with the lantern that's associated with Stairway to Heaven? I see many posters and t-shirts of the old man in the cloak standing on top of a mountain holding a lantern and a staff. What does he represent and who is he? I loved Zeppelin, and was thinking about getting this image as a tattoo, but i want to know what it means first.. can anyone help? sources would be appreciated as well

Can I use 6 volt lead acid battery on an LED lantern that says 4.5 Volts supply? I tried plugging a 6 volt power supply adapter in it and it works fine. I also tried using 3 Volts and got the same amount of brightness. The main point actually is does it affect the useful life of LED under those circumstances? I am actually considering putting another lantern in series to dilute the the voltage but I just want to know whether LED can still work best on higher or lower voltage. A simple LED circuit consists of a power source (battery), the LED and some type of current-limiting device (like resistor or internal resistance of the battery).
A single red LED generally drops between 1.7-2.2V at 20mA current. A single white LED generally drops between 3.1-3.8V at 20mA current.
The datasheet shows that the intensity of the LED varies nearly linearly with the current going through the device. So, as the battery voltage changes with a "SIMPLE" LED circuit, the intensity will definitely change. Some flashlights use multiple LEDs in series with a common resistor and a higher battery voltage. These are still "Simple" circuits. The resistor controls the amount of current which flows through the LEDs. A lot of power is lost in the current limiting resistor, reducing the efficiency and battery life.
More expensive, higher tech flashlights use electronic switching-type regulators. These devices are much more efficient and can apply the same output current over a wide range of input voltages; what you would find with the batteries the light specifies... even as the battery gets weak and the voltage drops. That is why the light is the same brightness over a wide input voltage range.
These switching regulators work great when the battery voltage is low. But these circuits are only rated up to a maximum input voltage. Exceed that voltage and you can permanently destroy the circuit.. and the light.
I would avoid exceeding the recommended battery or AC adapter voltage by more than 15%. Doing so would increase your chances of destroying the light.

what is the best alternative to a gas camping lantern? I am going camping soon with my two boys who are 4 and 18 months old. I have been shopping around for a decent camping lantern....I have come to the conclusion that a gas lantern would probably give off the brightest light but I am abit concerned about the safety aspects of using it will two young children charging around. At the moment I am thinking of a rechargeable LED lantern (15 or 30 LEDS), does anyone have any experience or recommendations??? Mr. Cains is right on, Coleman products cannot be beat. what a lot of folks forget is that gas or propane lanterns although extremely efficient are not safe to use in a tent. The fire danger is one specially with little ones about and second is carbon-monoxide poisoning. Getting the new LED technology lights from Coleman is the best thing to do.

How bright are LED wind-up lanterns? I've seen LED wind-up lanterns for sale. Can anyone give me a description of the level of brightness that they emit? Is there any way to compare their brightness with a xx Watt bulb (for example, do they have the brightness of a 40 Watt bulb, 20 Watt bulb )? Can these lanterns light up a room? Are they good enough for reading as a stand-alone light? Thanks in advance. ive used a few and the brightness differs by model. in my opinion, they provide a very minimal amount of light unless rigorously charged. I would equate one to probably a 15-watt bulb at best. don't expect it to light up a room or even be visible more than 6 feet away unless your in the pitch black dark.

Who did the art work to the Led zeppelin picture of the old man with a lantern on a mountain.? ive seen a big picture with a town and all but i cant find the entire painting or drawing if u know who is the artist let me know. thank u Tarot card, he hermit
The actual painting used for the album was attributed to Barrington Colby Mom, a friend of Page. (page's favorite tarot card was the hermit)

I should mention the image is to common and to old to be traced to a single person. The tarot card set has always had a hermit in the structured set. Some variations possible in very early years and other sets but this is what you see on standard decks for quite a few years.

It originally was on the album Led Zeppelin IV. The album had no text at all on the LP record cover, just a picture of an old British-looking guy with whiskers and a bunch of sticks on his back.
The inside sleeve of the record had the image you're talking about. It showed a hooded, Druid-like figure holding a lantern, standing on rocks. The picture is a charcoal drawing by lead guitarist Jimmy Page's friend Barrington Colby. Colby evidently drew it at Page's request. The man with the lantern is sometimes said to be The Hermit, Number IX in the tarot card deck, who is usually represented as a bearded monk holding a lamp to light the way. Of the image, Page was quoted: "The idea represents the ascension to the beacon and the light of truth."
Keep in mind this was the 70s and Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings were huge. There were many references to LOTR in Zeppelin songs, including "Over the Hills and Far Away," "Misty Mountain Hop," "The Battle of Evermore," "Ramble On," and others. Some say that the old man is Gandalf, but that Page wouldn't admit it for fear of incurring copyright problems from lawyers.
Zeppelin's record executives went bananas when they heard the band insisted on no text at all on the album cover. But L.Z. IV is often regarded as their greatest album, and it has at various times been the best-selling. Page was (and is) very eccentric, but you can't argue with success. The old man with the lantern image is now on countless t-shirts, mugs, et cetera.

Brightest LED Lantern??? Recently I purchased a SIX watt LED Flashlight at Target. It was the highest wattage so far I have sen for a flashlight ( LED). and for the small slim 5 inch light it cost close to $50

How do you put 4 AA batteries in a Ozark Trail Mini LED Camp Lantern? Hi, i bought a mini lantern (Ozark Trail-Mini LED Camp Lantern) at Walmart the other day...for out at the lake.....it takes 4 AA batteries but some how i can figure out how to put the batteries in?!...in the bottom of the lantern it unscrews but it looks like it takes 1 big D battery, and there isn't even like slots for each individual battery?!...can any one help? Maybe the batteries have to be in a pack together, and that pack plugs into one point.
