What are the best LED flashlights out there? A friend of mine let me borrow his surefire led flashlight to take camping. It was awesome. Small, light, tough, very bright and waterproof. I know that surefires are expensive. But are they the best? Are there any other companies that make similar or better LED flashlights? Cheaper? The main thing I want them to have is to be tough, reliable, bright and waterproof. A lifetime warranty or better would be awesome as well as it seems that most if not all of surefire's flashlights come with one. I'm a big fan of the surefire flashlights!
I also have a 3 watt Maglite AA. It puts out great light but, it's tempermental at times - batteries, contacts, some days it just doesn't like me. Other than that it's a good size, with a good reflector, and good light out put. My complaint is that you need two hands to turn it on and you can't get the accessory push button switch.
Pelican head lamps are very good too - unconditional lifetime warranty, very durable, go with the LED as the others can drain batteries quickly.

A Light Emitting Diode is more efficient at producing photons than an old fashioned filament bulb. More efficient means less energy needed to produce the same amount of photons (light).

Why do LED flashlights need a solid state chip board to operate? In regular flashlights it is just a contact from the bulb to the bateries. what dose the solid state do to the light to make the bulb brighter? They don't "need it" need it. But it makes battery life much better than a power wasting passive current regulation scheme with resistors. And that you "need" need because LEDs operate on constant current, not constant voltage like the battery.

Can someone please explain the difference between Xenon and LED flashlights? I would like to know how much of what color light is emited by each. I would also like to know which is beter to mount as a tactical light. I cant quote you the color temperature of each (degrees Kelvin), But xenon is a traditional style filament ctually lamp), but the atmosphere inside the glass envelope (the bulb) is filled with xenon, an intert noble gas. Electricity passing through the filament makes it glow brightly in the xenon charged atmosphere. They require and consume more current, so the batteries wont last as long, but the light is extremely bright and of a high color temperature. the blinding brightness makes it ideal as a tac light.
LED is a light emitting diode and has no filiament to burn out or break. the LED is very durable, and withstands vibration, dropping etc much better. the technology has improved a lot and LEDs are much brighter than they were even 3 years ago. They consume very little current, so batteries last a very long time (i have an LED head lamp for hunting/camping, and on low i get 50 hours of use from 3 AAA batteries). The color temp will vary by mfg, but hey are generally a cooler color, sometimes almost appearing pale blue. I have found that most LED lamps use some form of magifiying lens to condense the beam, making it appear brighter.
I use LED's in my flashlights, but for overall brightness and intermittent use, the Xenon is a better choice.Check the lumen output, it should be over 200 for either.This isnt your off the walmart shelf light.

What does the number in LED Flashlights stand for? I was looking online at LED flashlights and some say 9 LED, some say 32 LED, and some say 100 LED. What does the number stand for? Output intensity? About how many lumens are the cheap 9 LED mini flashlights? I bought this performance tool 9 led flashlight for like 2 bucks at advance auto. Its handy but i am thinking about spending ~30 to get a better flashlight that is around 100 lumens. I am just curious to find out about how many lumens this flashlight is to know if it would be that big of an improvement but i cant seem to find information on how many lumens it has anywhere I honestly do not remember very well any more, but this was brought up on CPF. I would say about 35 lumens +5 or -5 lumens. I am not positive since I never use them. I mainly use higher end lights.
Keep in mind that if you buy a flashlight that is LED, and it says it can put out 100 lumens, it will likely not put out 100 lumens. Many China made lights will say 100 lumens, but that is technically incorrect, since that is what the LED is capable of putting out, not what is truly coming out the front. Therefore it could be far less than 100 lumens. Typically if you buy an American made light from companies like Surefire, Muyshondt, Inova, etc. they will have the actual output listed. However, they are not cheap, and I paid a very high cost for my Muyshondt Aeon, which can put out 115 lumens on high, 10 lumens on low, and has amazing battery life for a CR2 battery. It is not the brightest, but it is definitely a very high quality light.
I am not saying that all China made lights are this way, but many of them are. This can go for many lights made in the USA as well as other countries.
