This is more of a rant than a question, but here goes: So, the EU is banning incandescent light bulbs as of, well, last year They are replaced by CFL's and energy saving halogen bulbs CFL's are not dimmable, halogens are, but they are to 'be phased out by 2013' LED's cast a hideously bright spot of dull blue light in one direction CFL's contain mercury, and nobody knows where to recycle them, so when they break, we breath in mercury vapor and throw them in the bin, where they get dumped in landfill. "They last longer" (in buildings where the electrical supply is completely constant, aka nowhere, and still blow with voltage fluctuations as with incandescents CFL's have big white plastic bases which look awful in light fixtures that are designed to be decorative, not light up a room CFL's are too bright, inducing migraines and creating a gloomy, cold light. In California, we have been quite successful with the CFL bulbs. Perhaps 10 years ago, I put all our remaining incandescents in a box on the sidewalk, marked "free". We have a mandatory recycling system that reclaims the CFL's (and the long fluorescent tubes, too). Seems to be working. And there are dimmable CFL's that you can buy, though truthfully, we never dim our lights, anyway. The newer LED lights are much improved. The cost is still exhorbitant, but I would gladly take that quality of light if it were reasonably priced.
I like your idea of compulsory heat recovery systems. Maybe you would make a greater impact by campaining for those, than against low-power lighting.

None of the new brands will have the same "feel" as a Singer that was built pre 1970.

Flourescent Lights! READ THIS!? You probably know that these lights (tube lamps) are very energy efficient, and have mercury vapor in them. Have you ever looked at the ends of one of them? (You see 2 prongs on either end, and either ONE or TWO PINHOLES!!!) These holes confuse me. If mercury is toxic, why make holes in the ends? Wouldn't it just leak out? (you can even see the other end of the bulb through one of the holes if you look carefully.) The green-capped bulbs, are "reduced mercury" right? (Those have TWO holes and not one. Maybe mercury is reduced because it leaks out twice as fast...) If you don't believe me, look at any Fluorescent Tube in your home or office. My question, finally, is this: Why do they have to have holes, and doesn't the vapor that is toxic just leak out? Perhaps that's why they stop working after a few years? (when one dies, nothing actually burns out like in an incandescent bulb. It's either the ballast that can't jolt the vapors to fire up or something inside that doesn't connect. But when you notice one dying, it's not instant. That's why I'm led to believe the vapors just slowly leak out.) Thanks for reading, but I would like an answer. Tomcat: Perhaps you haven't looked at the end of a flourescent bulb carefully: Next to the metal pins, there are either one or two holes, in which you can see, to the other end of the tube, on the inside. If you put your mouth to one of the holes and blew into it, air comes out the other side. I uploaded a picture to my site, but sorry I didn't get the right angle to see into the bulb. Just look on your own bulb to where the hole is: http://public.u4ik.tk/DSC08167.JPG and also, the non-green capped bulbs have more mercury AND one or 2 holes. Those are holes in the end cap themselves which are not part of the tube. The tube is sealed with only the electrodes protruding through the glass. Chances are that those holes were for alignment during assembly or the result of riveting the pin plate into place. Also, there's very little mercury in these tubes, on the order of milligrams, the mercury is not bio-available and not readily absorbed by people. The concern is that if spent tubes wind up in an anaerobic landfill, anaerobic bacteria would bio-methylase the mercury into methyl mercury which could bio-accumulate up the food chain to dangerous levels. It's more accurate to say that the mercury could become toxic in a landfill. Also, mercury is a rather large molecule and hence does not leak easily. It's not so much the gases inside leaking out as it is air leaking in. It's practically a vacuum inside so that a plasma can be easily established but as outside air leaks in, it becomes harder and harder to initiate and sustain a plasma. There's a lot of work being done at reducing and even eliminating the need for mercury in such lights.

I read the xenon's use an arc to produce light rather then a filament however in the picture these look like they have a filament. If so can they just replace my current, yellowish halogen bulbs in a '06 mitsubishi lancer. Cheers i believe those are valve stem lights so they just screw onto your valve stem's but if your trying to use HID's they do need a upgrade kit which costs like 100 bucks for the kit and installation
