What is the best LED bicycle head light for every day after dark commuting in a city? I have a huge and heavy 16 LED flashlight that works well. But well, it's huge and heavy and the "D" cell batteries rattle... though they do last along time. Any suggestions? I'm not spending more than $30 ish. whats better LED or HID bicycle lights? figuring out what light i should buy for bicycling at night. i well be doing on-road riding. LED bicycle light or a HID? i want to know the pros and cons of both lights and which one you thing is best. Over the years I've always used HID or Halogen lights as LED's just were not very bright, battery life is great but their light output suffered. Newer LED's can be very bright, I used one this past fall during 12 hr race that was as bright as my HID, however battery life wasn't much longer than my HID system.
A good thing that has come about is battery tech. as you now can get some systems that will recharge in a very short time (if that matters).
For a rear light LED is the only way to go. For the front you have several things to consider, how bright do you need it and how long must the light stay on for.

I also go to the library, so I will need a good light to ride from the library to home at night. So which one out of the 2 is better? Between the two designs, the 5 LED Power Beam is better. It uses 4xAAA batteries vs. the 56 LED design which uses 3xAA batteries. The 4xAAA higher voltage makes the light brighter. The current draw from the 5 LED design is less, meaning that it should last about 20 hours vs. about 2 hours for the 56 LED light if ALL LEDs are constantly on (number of LEDs on is selectable). The 56 LED mount design is forward heavy and a little fragile. So it will have a tendency to tip forward over time and light just the ground immediately in front of you. You will need to constantly readjust it. The 5 LED Power Beam is much better balanced and never needs adjustment. So, all in all, the 5 LED Power Beam is a better light choice.

* If you ride far at night or in busy areas, you may want to use multiple lights for better visibility. My blinking front light is the 5 LED Power Beam. For my 15 mile night time commute, I augment that with 2 bigger lights in the front, 2 in the rear, and a head lamp. The head lamp is especially useful such that when looking at cars, they see a small light pointed at them and notice that I am a moving bike.
Be careful of potholes when riding in the dark!

Even the elcheapo ones can be seen from miles away. For tail lights go with more not brighter. A motorist that sees a whole bunch of lights thinks a hole bunch of bicycles.
Even the brightest one will dull as the batteries go off.
Headlights are different thing.

Help me find a decent LED light system for a bicycle...please? I'm looking for a decent LED headlight and tail light for a bicycle but I don't want to spend too much money ($30 or so). Can you help me make an LED bicycle light? I want to make an LED bicycle light which will clip or tape to the spokes of my bike and flash when I cycle. It needs to be small and battery powered (obviously) or, even better, self powered by the motion of the bike. The important thing is that it's in the spokes so it goes round and can be seen from the side at night. if it could come on automatically, and switch off after a couple of minutes of inactivity too, that would be great! can someone help me finding the bits i'll need and tell me how to put them together? i don't know anything about electronics, so this will be a learning experience for me, but am happy to solder. preferably stuff will be available on UK websites as that's where I am. If you just want it to blick, Use a FLED, (Flashing LED) also called a blinking LED (these will run for months on one AA battery) . Could use a switch with a weight on the button so as the tire turns the centrifical force will turn it on and goes off when you stop.

Can I modify my current led bicycle light with a more powerful led? I am currently using a led headlight from a bicycle lighting company but recently my dated led headlight that produces 150 lumens fails in comparison with the newer headlights on the market. So I have been researching newer led's that produces massive lumen outputs. I have settled on one led in particular and its the SST-90. I want to know if I can simply solder the new led into position and it work. My battery is a 6 volt 3ah NiMH. the new led should tell you what voltage and milliamps it requires. if it's the same, then just solder it in. if not you may have to rewire the pwer supply
