is 300 dolars a good price to buy a used living room set 2 lamps a 3 tables? I just moved to America and I don't know if this is a good price . They are covered in fabric instead of leather and seem to be in good condition Sure that's a good price. Especially, if the furniture is in good condition. We have nice antique hand me down furniture that we got for FREE ! It's DANISH MODERN and looks really nice in our ranch style home.. The low profile of the furniture looks GREAT against the large floor to ceiling windows. PLUS the furniture has drawers and a dark finish! It's circa 1960's ! The people we got it from bought it used in the 1970's.. So good furniture can last a long time if taken care of properly! I suggest if you need other furniture you check out FREECYCLE.ORG in your area... EVERYTHING is FREE you just have to workout a pick-up time with the person offering!

what are the best quaint, possibly "victorianesque" downtowns in america? I am wondering what the nicest, most picturesque downtown areas in the united states are. I am specifically thinking of nice brown-brick 19th century commercial strips, supplimented by nice trees and traditional-styled street lamps, possibly brick-paved streets too....not exclusively, but basically any historic well-kept downtown that is unblemished by surface lots or modern skyscrapers/1960s slab-buildings. thanks I don't know if it is what you are looking for, but I've heard of this place called Ripon, Wisconsin. They have an historic downtown district and a lot of Victorian ("painted lady") houses on the streets nearby. I guess they do some kind of Charles Dicken's themed weekend at Christmastime during which people walk in the streets wearing Victorian clothing. Might be worth a look. Voltage Converter for United Kingdom lamp used in North America? Hello, I recently bought a small lamp from the United Kingdom and would like to use it in Canada. However, I know that a) the UK uses a different type of plug and b) their voltage is higher then ours. I know I need a "step up" voltage converter. However, I am unsure what kind of wattage I should be looking for. I see a ton for 50W but do I need to go higher? If so how high would most people recommend. Thank You The step up transformer has to be able to handle the wattage of the bulb but it would be better to get one that is a little bigger. If the lamp has a 50 watt bulb get at least a 60 watt transformer. If the bulb is 100 watts go for a 120 watt transformer.
But check and see what kind of bulb the lamp takes. Maybe you can find a 110 volt replacement bulb to fit. Then you don't need to worry about the step up transformer. Just get the cord rewired with the correct plug.

usa lamp into uk socket? i want to buy a lamp from america and am wondering how/if it will work here in the uk? i thought of just using a travel adaptor but heard that they are really only for tempory use, but i wont really be using it that much. i have looked at changing the actual socket on the end what do you guys think, cheers in advance. some specs: (this means nothing to me) low voltage (12v) replaceable bulb Replaceable halogen bulb is 10 watt/12 volts Cord and adapter are UL approved for use in US households (110V, 50-60Hz power) link: http://www.offi.com/products/lighting/MEGDAS.php?p2c=662#top The "50-60Hz power" thing is good since US is 60Hz and the UK is 50Hz. If you could get the outlet to 110 -120 volts with a neutral it should work fine.

Do british light bulbs fit american lamps? Help? I ordered my daughter a spongebob lamp from america, it came today but im not sure if i can use a british light bulb in itor not, its says use type A light bulb max of 40 wats, but what is a type A light bulb? Can any one help me? Light bulbs are pretty much international, only the names are different.
Look at the light fitting. If it has a rim with two sideways L shape cutouts, it is a BAYONET socket. If it is only as wide as your finger, it is a SMALL BAYONET.
If the fitting has screw threads, it is an EdisonScrew fitting. These also come in normal and small.
If you are in doubt,take the lamp with you to the shop. Make sure the bulb you get is not so big that it touches and overheats any cover over it.

I've installed 3 fluorescent fixtures in the house. They randomly go off whY!? I've replace fixtures before. This time I got 3 fluorescent fixtures round style lighting and put them up. THey worked nice but lately been giving me headache. The lights goes on for 2 sec and goes off. sometimes it can go on normally. They are relatively new from costco. made by lights of america. i bought lights of america before (table lamps and they work great) Check to see if your light switch is going bad or if there is a loose wire.

If the the economy in America is so great, then why are so many Americans moving to China? China is over-run with American wannabe ESL teachers. They all tell similar stories of American unemployment, lack of health insurance, and being kicked out by their parents. China seems to be their beacon of hope, just like the Statue of Liberty used to be. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" First, I'm glad to hear that Chinese schools are getting a lot of native English speakers. I think China is a great country for Americans to discover, because it's a whole lot better than Americans are led to believe by the propaganda machine, and Chinese people are very warm and friendly as hosts in their own country, as opposed to being insular (unless they need something from you) and on the aggressive side when guests of other countries.
I think that a lot of Americans are fed up with the American quality of life, and are looking for something different, for a change, and just to get out of America and its particular ugliness. It's true that most Americans when they reach 18 or so are expected to get out of their family's house permanently and "do something with their lives". This was the case for me. Usually everybody wants this; independence is one of the most highly valued traits in American culture. usually an American won't complain about being kicked out of the house; he'll look forward to leaving.
Unemployment: China offers opportunities to teach English, often at a university, for any native English speakers who have any sort of university degree. No opportunities like that stateside. It's a chance to have a good status, feel good about yourself and what you're doing, help people, and have an interesting cultural experience. Few Americans are going to go to China just because they can't find a job or don't have health insurance. China offers a lot more than just a job, but if they do go just for work, then how lucky they are if they have their eyes open to discover such a wonderful culture. I think young Americans are smart to take advantage of China's demand to learn English. They are not planning to become Chinese; this is a stage in their lives, in their development. It's a world economy now, anyway, and good for those who figure that out and have the skills and are in demand so that they can take advantage of that..

Can a UK bayonet electrical lamp fitting be used in America? This is the type of .fitting found on table lamps Yes. We have come a long way here across the big pond. A lot of quality lighting stores carry bulbs with Euro bases or if not Euro reducers are availible to use U.S. Bulbs.

What kinds of pens did people use back in the 1850s, in America? i'm sure they didnt use quills, did they? or were pens and pencils already invented? and also.. what kinds of lamps? oil lamps? what kinds of houses? what kinds of beds? what kind of paper? sorry... it's just that i'm writing a historical fiction for social studies class, and i couldnt find this information anywhere.... thanks in advance! quills
