I want to be building a high powered flashlight with LEDs. It's required to have a LED driver and or resistor? So I wanted to build a high powered 200 lumens flashlight with an LED. It's 3.2V~3.3V. I was wanting to know if I could hook up a pair of AA batteries in sequence along with a switch to the LED and use it like that. It would give me a 3 volts. Or should I be using a 9 volt battery and a resistor (Which is fuzzy for me) and switch with the led plate? Fist time for me and I'd like a bit of help thanks! a) 200 Lumens isn't high-powered, it's mediocre (at best), considering current LEDs
b) a pair of AA batteries won't give you three volts - at least not for long, considering that you'll need around 700 mA going through the LED. But even if - 3.0 Volts is not 3.4 Volts. The usual ways for this are
1) use three AA or AAA cells in series, possibly with a small series resistor. Rechargeables are preferred to primary cells
2) use a single Li primary cell. In either case, you'll need to figure in the internal resistance of your batterie(s) in order to limit the current through the LED, and you'll get a horrible performance since your light output will be (hughly) dependent on the runtime, i.e. the longer you run the light, the dimmer it gets.
3) use any reasonable (i.e. don't mix Li and NiMH) combination of cells you like and a matching current regulated step-up (or -down) converter to drive the LED.

Making sense of flashlight brightness...? I got confused when trying to buy a flashlight today. When the flashlight says 3 Watts, is that the same wattage output than a light bulb in my house? 3Watts seems very low to me, yet it was the highest wattage I could find. How does a lumen compare to a watt? How does a candlepower compare to watt? Do volts have anything to do with brightness output? Some flashlights only say how many volts. Some flashlights only say how many LED's it has, is there any way of telling how bright it is? How am I supposed to compare if every company uses a different method of measuring light? WHY are there all these different measurements for light now? What was wrong with sticking to watts? Lumens or candlepower is the true light you get out of a bulb or other light source. Watts is the power consumed to produce that light. Incandescent bulbs are very inefficient in this respect. Krypton and other rare gas bulbs are somewhat more efficient. LED's are the most efficient. With flashlights or any battery powered light the watts used are important because you have limited power in your batteries. So I disagree partially with Ynot. Watts are important but you really need to know the about of light you are getting from those watts.

Which flashlight is best? Lumens are meaningless if you want to blind someone with it. Look for the spec in candlepower. A good blinding spotlight will be rated for 2 - 3 milliion candlepower.
Me, I've been using Mag-Lites for over 20 years. They're powerful, reliable, durable, and long-lasting. The 3 D-cell, and especially the 4 D-cell ones will trigger the daylight sensor on streetlights and turn them off. And the 2-AA pocket flashlights are extremely portable and convenient.

What is the smallest and brighest flashlight? I am looking for a reallly small flashlight that has a high lumen output (at least 120 lumens or more). If you know of any flashlights like this, please tell me about them, I already have the Streamlight Scorpion LED. I would also like the flashlight to be at least 8 inches or smaller. Good adjustible L.E.D Flashlight ? No, I'm not in law enforcement just figured this section would know about good lights. I'm looking for a good light to go fishing with since I do mostly night fishing. I been looking at the Coast Tactical light, low's has them for $40 sounds like a good light ..... but figured I'd get some sugestions from people , I guess cops usaly go with mag-light right? ..... I like them but there too big for me to carry ...... I'd like to have a good led white beamed light no bigger then 7 inch with a 60 or higher lumens light in the price range around $70 or so. ....... Does any one know about how much the Coast T 7 model cost. Check with Cabela's or Bass Pro shops. They sell some of the same lights by Streamlight or Surefire that we use.
Maglite does make a good "AA" 1 watt led light that can be found just about anywhere for under $20.00 or a 3 watt version for under $35.00.

What is the highest lumen flashlight that I can get my hubby for Valentine's day? My husband is obsessed with finding the highest lumen flashlight, but that is still small (can carry in his pocket). You don't say exactly what you mean by carry in his pocket, that can vary a lot. The first link leads to a very bright flashlight at 450 lumens. It's about 8 inches long or 207 mm. The link leads to a wholesale house. You'll need to find a retailer that handles it.
The flashlight at the second link puts out 200 lumens but is very reasonably priced. It's much smaller at about 4 inches or 100 mm long.
The third link is also a 200 lumen light. It's about 5.5 inches or 140 mm long.
Many of the high output flashlights only put out about 80 lumens. These are the brightest I could find.

what flashlight (tactical) has the highest output rating in lumen? I am having trouble finding one past 200 help appreciated thank you i dont care about multi spectrum led and whatnot. led's are the way to go, bright and efficient.

Which LED flashlight should I buy, for camping/hiking/bail out bag? From looking online, it seems like any surfire light is the way to go.. and i would love to have one, but they are so pricey.. is there a LED flashlight for under 50$ (or close to it) that has a high/low (power saver) lumen output setting and a long lasting hours usage on a single battery? prefer a tac light or high lumen but will sacrifice that for price... finally, do those LED lights have a focussed beam? or do they just illuminate an area? Man, reading online is fine and dandy but there is no substitute for experience. You gotta go try out some of this stuff and make a decision based off what's best for you, not what anybody else says.
In my experience no LED lights have as focused of a beam, they mostly just make light. Not always helpful, but sometimes.
You seem to be looking for quality gear. Hate to break it to you, but good equipment (in any field, not just outdoors stuff) is expensive. Either suck it up and pay the money or deal with lower quality products.

Most powerful flashlight? Hi I'm looking to buy a flashlight soon. I want to know what is literally the most powerful/brightest hand held flashlight. And what is the difference between lumens and candle power?? I found one online that is 4500 lumens. Is there higher? Candlepower is not an outdated term but it is different than lumens. To keep it very simple, lumens refers to VOLUME of light while candlepower measures INTENSITY.
For example, take a flashlight with an adjustable beam like a Streamlight Stinger or a MagLite MagCharger. When you change the beam from flood to spot the lighted area becomes smaller but much brighter. The candlepower of that spot of light has increased significantly but the flashlight is still producing the same amount (lumens) of light.
As DumDum says about checking the light's run time, remember that these are rated by the manufacturers and are usually a very optimistic estimate. I find that I can usually count on 2/3 of what the manufacturer claims and anything after that I consider a bonus.

best tactical flashlight (streamlight?)? I just purchases a blackhawk! cqc shoulder rig with a spare mag carrier and a a flash light carrier. The flashlight carrier is suppose to fit compact streamlight flash light and the Streamlight Scorpion LED Tactical Light is pretty cool for only $50. like I'd prefer to see a higher lumens (120) because I know the sog strobe is about 210 but I like how it lasts 3 hours on a pair of batteries. I will NEVER buy another Fenix flashlight again, not b/c of the lumens (they're great, very bright flashlight), but b/c the flashlight isn't build strong enough. I use a flashlight everyday (Journeyman Electrician), and the Fenix just isn't built for heavy trade or military use. Also, the red filter is cheap - plastic housing and lens break too easy.
Most of us have switched to Surefire. Some have Pelican but still have problems.
