Designed for military, search & rescue, and border patrol applications, the HIDH-3550 can project it's primary 50 watt HID beam 2000 meters with minimal surrounding light. This is a very powerful handheld flashlight. It will easily reach 7000 feet in 50 watt mode and 5000 feet in 35 watt mode. There are several unique features that make this HID light powerful, dependable and easy to use. From a power standpoint, the state of the art ballast actually enables the operator to conserve the lithium ion battery life while still providing 5000 foot of beam length. The completely sealed housing makes this light operable as a dive light to at least 100 meters. The use of a magnetic switch ensures that there is no ingress point in the housing. Instead the operator simply twists the collar ring style switch to turn the light from 35 watts to off to 50 watts HID spotlight operation. One of the most unique aspects of this light is the fact that each of the two parts are machined from billet aircraft grade aluminum. This includes the reflector and light head. The reflector itself is actually machined as part of the head and coated. Generally, when you disassemble a flashlight, the reflector is a separate, thin aluminum cone shaped component. In this light, the head is actually machined from solid billet, and the reflector is actually milled into the head directly. While this takes an inordinate amount of CNC time, the result is a lifetime reflector that always holds its shape and is exempt from many times of degradation found in separate reflectors. The reflector holds it designed optimal curvature regardless of repeated heating and cooling. Thus, the operator is guaranteed consistent light output. The heavy duty handle makes the light easy to carry, point and surface place for ideal beam placement. The light can even be hung from a tree branch or pole. The weight balanced housing enables the operator to position the light fairly precisely. It also make it easy to carry. Many times, larger handheld spotlight type flashlights are heavier on whichever end has the battery. This HID flashlight, however, is well balanced, which makes it ideal for portage or mounting. No, there aren't any. They do use too much power. You won't find HID or incandescent shake-lights because the shaking just doesn't create enough energy to light up a hot-bulb like an HID or incandescent. LEDs use much less energy.

I need your opinion on an environmental incident Recently I was on a backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas to Thousand Island Lake. One night two boys decided that it would be fun to bait a bear with leftovers from the dinner. The parents found out and many of them said that it was a very bad idea. The two boys never cleaned up the mess of food that they made 20 yards from their tent. That night a bear came and ate the leftovers while the two boys hid in their tent and watched it with a flashlight. The bear then walked away when it was done eating and nobody was harmed. What are your thoughts on this incident and how do you think it should be handled? This was 5 days ago and people are still upset even though I think the boys understood what they did and were talked to the day after.

over the years, bears have been know to raid the campground dumps to the point of the forest service transporting the campground garbage out of the area.
As long as the boys did not attempt to approach the bears, there was really no harm done.

Its hard to compare the three since different bulbs and "number" of bulbs differ in their output. LED bulbs -- single -- has the lowest output that's why you usually see 25 of them at a time on a flashlight.
Standard small halogens bulbs produce around 350-400 lumens.
Xenon and HID are the same thing, Xenon is the gas inside of the HID bulb and has the most lumens. If you are looking at 400 lumens you want to stay away from HID. HID produces around 3000 lumens.
First Reference is the output of a HID bulbs, the 2nd reference is only for 55W Halogens but you can see the difference in lumens and candles.

looking for the most illuminating HID flashlight...? I'm looking for a good solid beam (or adjustable beam) projecting torch, strobe function is a necessity. This would be for suspect contact, so i'd prefer a torch that provides a high intensity blinding beam. Also would be nice if it was small enough to tack onto a duty belt and patrol comfortably. Hi everyone. I sell HID Conversion kits, and i was thinking about making HID Flashlights.? I wanted to know since, these HID lights use a 12 volt power source from a car, is it possible to get like one 9 volt battery, and 2 AA 1.5volt batteries and power up the light? I was worried about the amperage needed and other stuff of sorts.. any ideas? I think the amperage will shut you down. It is going to be hard to find a niche between halogens for high intensity and LEDs for battery life.

Other than the fact it is out of stock and you can not get one it sounds OK. Maybe it is a bait and switch where they try to sell you a more expensive one instead of the "out of stock one" or maybe the price goes up after it becomes available again.
Technically it looks good but out-of-stock always worries me.
