Earlier attempts to analyze these laws focused upon efforts to maintain slavery by severely restricting the rights of free blacks: if free blacks could not possess arms and lacked other basic rights, slaves would be less inclined to seek their freedom. Cramer rejects such thinking by demonstrating that the concealed weapon laws of the early republic were not racially-motivated. He further supports the work of other scholars who have lately examined the role of Scots-Irish immigrants in creating a distinctive southern back-country culture of honor violence including dueling and brawling. It was the attempt to control such violence, Cramer argues, that led to the concealed weapons laws. Thus, rather than considering gun control laws primarily as legal or constitutional history, this study starts from a cultural and historical viewpoint. Excerpt: The .50 Caliber BMG Regulation Act of 2004 is a law in the state of California that effectively banned all .50 BMG -caliber rifles from being sold in the state. The law took effect on January 1, 2005. Background The legislature of California declared that "proliferation and use" of .50 BMG rifles posed a terrorist threat, as well as a threat to the "health, safety, and security of all residents" of California. The act required existing .50 BMG rifles to be registered with the state and prohibited the sale of any rifle after the ban went into effect. To quote the state web site, the act "regulates the .50 BMG rifles in essentially the same manner as assault weapons." The law specifically allowed a registration period of one year, now passed, to register any such firearms, after which unregistered weapons would become illegal firearms.Definitions .50 BMG rifles are defined in the act as "a centerfire rifle that can fire a .50 BMG cartridge and is not already an assault weapon." ".50 BMG cartridge" is defined as a cartridge that is designed and intended to be fired from a centerfire rifle and that meets all of the following criteria: (1) It has an overall length of 5.54 inches (141 mm) from the base to the tip of the bullet. (2) The bullet diameter for the cartridge is from .510 to, and includ...$27.09

Pages fine. An invaluable guide to truth over propagandizement and limitation of the individual's rights of self-protection. Does allowing people to own or carry guns deter violent crime Or does it cause more citizens to harm each other Wherever people happen to fall along the ideological spectrum their answers are all too often founded upon mere impressionistic and anecdotal evidence. In this direct challenge to conventional wisdom legal scholar John Lott presents the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever done on crime. In this timely and provocative work he comes to a startling conclusion: more guns mean less crime. Lott's sources are broad and inclusive and his evidence the most extensive yet assembled taking full account of the FBI's massive yearly crime figures for all 3054 US counties over eighteen years the largest national surveys on gun ownership as well as state police documents on illegal gun use. His unexpected findings reveal that many of the most commonly held assumptions about gun control and its crime-fighting efficacy are simply wrong. Waiting periods gun buybacks and background checks yield virtually no benefits in crime reduction. Instead Lott argues right to carry laws and legally concealed handguns currently represent the most cost-effective methods available for reducing violent crime. 321 pages. Few bookstore marks. FAQ about Handgun Laws

What are handgun laws like in Ontario? I'm just curious if it is legal to carry a hand gun in Canada. What is owning shotguns and handguns like? Are the laws pretty strict? There is no permit to carry a handgun in Canada. You can own a handgun but need to have a PAL (position acquistion license). In order to get that, you need to take two different gun safety courses, then pay the money to apply.
In order to have a handgun in your house it has to be registered. You need to have a trigger lock, secured in a container (gun safe, locked closet, etc) away from the ammunitions. There are also strict conditions to transport to and from the range.
Long guns require only one course to own and handle. They also have to be stored safely. I believe they are getting rid of the long gun registry. The laws around them are a little more relaxed then handguns.
So yes, the laws are pretty strict for handguns, less for long guns (and should get more relaxed).

Handgun laws? Does anyone think they will eventually do away with the 2nd ammendment because of rising gun deaths across the U.S.? I am a new collector and i would hate to see this happen. I guess our capital is trying to make it illegal for the public to own a handgun and experts say it may spill out across the U.S. I do not believe that removing the right to own guns will change the death rate due to guns -- and that is what NRA has to present. I don't own a gun, don't want to, wouldn't know what to do with it if I had it.
I think you are safe to collect, but make sure your collection is stored in a safe.

Handgun Laws? A couple questions.... Is there a waiting period for purchasing a handgun in Nevada? Can you purchase a handgun in Nevada even though you are not a state resident and take it to California.(Im from California) NO and NO.

What are the concealed handgun laws in Kentucky and Tennessee? I'm going to be stationed in Fort Campbell so I'm wondering what the concealed handgun laws were for active duty miliary in either kentucky or tennessee. Kentucky is a "shall issue" state. A carry and conceal weapon (CCW) permit will be issued to anyone who qualifies but will not serve as a National Instant Criminal System (NICS) check. The issuing authority is the Kentucky State Police. The following steps will show how to obtain a CCW license in Kentucky.
Step1Receive a carry and conceal weapon permit from another state.
Step2Be more than 21 years old and a United States citizen. Note that these requirements do not apply if you already have an out-of-state CCW permit.
Step3Live in Kentucky for six months or be a member of the United States Armed Forces on active duty if you are applying for a Kentucky CCW permit.
Step4Complete an application form at your local sheriff's office, a citizenship affidavit and provide photo identification. You will also need to pass a criminal and mental background check.
Step5Pay the application fee, part of which goes to the sheriff and part goes to the state police. You are exempt from the application fee if you are a retired police officer.
Step6Renew your permit every five years by submitting the renewal notice, a renewal affidavit stating you are still qualified to hold a permit and a photo ID to your local sheriff's office. A renewal fee will be charged and an additional late fee will be due if your permit has expired in the last six months. You must reapply if your permit has been expired for more than six months.~
Tennessee is a "shall issue" state. A carry and conceal weapon (CCW) permit will be issued to anyone who qualifies but will not serve as a National Instant Criminal System (NICS) check. The issuing authority is the Department of Public Safety or the Handgun Carry Permit Office. The following steps will show how to obtain a CCW license in Tennessee.
Step1Have a CCW permit from any state or be a police officer from any state. Tennessee recognizes CCW permits from all other states unless you have been a resident of Tennessee for six months. In this case, you need to get a CCW permit in Tennessee.
Step2Be 21 years of age and a resident of Tennessee.
Step3Complete a handgun safety course certified by the Department of Public Safety within the six months before applying for the CCW permit.
Step4Obtain an application form from any driver's license station. Submit the completed application, a handgun safety course certification, a photo identification and the permit fee in cash or a certified check to any driver's license station.
Step5Receive your permit or be denied in 90 days. Renew the permit every four years by paying the renewal fee. You must keep your permit on your person at all times when carrying a concealed weapon and present the permit upon demand by any law enforcement officer.
Step6Refrain from carrying a concealed weapon in bars, courtrooms, public schools or any building with a posted sign banning firearms. ~

handgun laws? what do you have to have to own a handgun and do you have to have anything to own a 22 pistol also what all is needed to own a suppressor aka silencer for a handgun or a 22 pistol? Depends on what state your in. State laws vary from great gun states like Alaska and Idaho to unconstitional nazi states like Massachussetts and New Jersey. In Alaska you can buy a handgun in a convienence store and after the NICS check clears, stick it in your jacket and walk out. In New Jersey, you have to run around and get permission from local authorities then fill out paperwork, then wait like a month. Very few states allow you to carry silencers, some states will allow you to own them, but not carry them. Here is a website with a list of gun laws for every state.

Any handgun laws & licensing in New York in the 1950’s? I am doing a history project and need info on any handgun laws or licensing required in the Long Island area of New York in the early 1950’s. I am unable to substantiate that there were any restrictions or licensing required what-so-ever. But, I would like verification. The only dates I’m conserved with are the 1950’s. Please let me know the source of your information. Thanks for any help! The mainstay of NY gun restriction and control is the Sullivan act [see link]. It allowed gun permits on a 'discretionary' basis.
If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. :-)

What are handgun laws in New York City for non-residents? If a civilian wants to carry a gun in New York City what is the law as far as permits or any other rules. This is for a law abiding, sane non-resident that travels from Virginia to New York City. fifthwheel948 - I am well aware of the law on carrying guns and having proper permits. That is why I am asking if someone knows what the rules are in New York City. Thank you for your useless response. i wouldnt, even if i had one. pennsylvania and other states are very lenient with their gun laws however... in nyc :
Non-residents:
A non-resident citizen may possess a rifle or shotgun in New York, as long as it is unloaded while being transported. No person may carry, possess or transport a handgun in or through the state unless he has a valid New York license. New York does not issue licenses to non-residents nor does it recognize licenses issued by other states. (A provision of federal law provides a defense to state or local laws which would prohibit the passage of persons with firearms in interstate travel. If a person is traveling from any place where he may lawfully possess and transport a firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and transport such firearm and the firearm is unloaded and in the trunk. In vehicles without a trunk, the unloaded firearm shall be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. Necessary stops, e.g., gasoline and rest, seem permissible.) A member or coach of an accredited college or university target pistol team may transport a handgun into or through New York to participate in a collegiate, Olympic or target pistol shooting competition provided that the handgun is unloaded and carried in a locked carrying case and the ammunition is carried in a separate locked container. An alien may possess a rifle or shotgun for use while hunting provided he has a valid New York hunting license. Criminals Escaped Because Guard Used Lethal Weapon Criminals Escaped Because Guard Used Lethal Weapon, April 22, 2011. In my last video I talk about Gary L. Bryant, 21 who was murdered during a Internet caf robbery. The two robbery suspects escaped because the guard killed Gary. If the guard would have shot him with synthetic bullets he would be alive to tell police, who the two robbery suspects were and where they lived. Real bullets don t stop criminals. There was a man who was shot in the head and he didn t know it until several weeks later, when he seen a doctor for headaches and the doctor found a bullet in his skull. Bullets travel so fast they can go right through someone without the person even feeling it. The reason why bullets kill people, is they bleed to death or if a person is shot in the heart, it stops blood flow. Synthetic or rubber bullets are not designed to go through people. Therefore they cause a lot of pain and it knocks people down very easy. You know if you were shot with a synthetic bullet. You re not going anywhere. Synthetic bullets can also be designed with a tattoo dye that could mark a person for life. Yes synthetic bullets could kill someone, but they re not designed to. When Gary was shot, he simply got back up and ran to the car. He later died from bleeding to death. If he was shot with a rubber bullet, he would never got back up, never bled to death either and he would have been able to tell police who the other suspects were and where they lived. I used to think the nine Supreme Court
