What Type of Flashlight Should I buy? Hello, this is a little out of the ordinary but I'm currently a student at Columbia College Chicago and am working on a marketing research project in the Handheld Flashlight category. This project is going to define the survival market, more specifically, what gear is important to survival. I'm currently looking at flashlights, could some of you answer the following questions below to help complete my senior marketing research project? I'm looking for an EDC or BOB emergency flashlight? My old EDC flashlight broke, I've been looking for a new one but I'm unsure what to buy. I had a Gerber Firecracker LED flashlight, I'd like to get a better flashlight. I'm wondering what other people have for an EDC flashlight, I'd like a small flashlight that's waterproof, LED, 60 to 120 lumens, long tactical run time, one of those pointy tactical/home defense type of end, shockproof, and under $120. -thanks! I just recommended the brand Fenix. They are a really good brand for a flashlight. I actually picked up one for my Dad for this Christmas. He was looking for an LED flashlight too. This site, Gad-zooks.com has a huge selection of Fenix flashlights. I bet you can find the perfect one for there. They do range in price, but most are well under the $120 you are looking to spend.

How are you planning to haul all this kit? A wheelbarrow? A solar powered golf cart?
Fact is you can't carry more than a third of your weight for any period of time. All the crap you list would be at least as heavy as you are and most would be pointless in an emergency.
Way too much duplication of tools. A folding pocket knife and saw are all you need. Maybe keep the multitool but no more. Don't need the icebox -- I doubt the 7-11's will have bags of ice during Armageddon.
Certainly don't need all the weapons (take the smallest gun if you insist. Don't you know that statistics support that you are 20 times more likely to be killed by a gun if you carry or own one than if you do not? Facts prove having a gun only attracts violence.) If you plan on using a weapon to hunt game, stick with a good small crossbow -- you can reuse the bolts instead of worrying about ammo. And a bow is silent.
The phone and charger would be useless quickly unless you carry a portable solar charger. Where are you planning to plug in during the Apocalypse?
Doubt any gas mask you could buy would be of much use in a sophisticated chemical or bio warfare attack. Scrap that.
Ditch the water tablets and get a hand pump water filter. A roll of tie wire will be more useful than nails. Ditch the Bible unless you need the pages for firestarter.
Minus 30 sleeping bag is WAY too warm for anything above zero. Carry a 10 or 15 degree bag . You can roll up in the tarp for extra warmth inside the tent.
Other silly stuff: taser gun, bear spray, binoculars, trekking pole (sticks are free and easy to find), hot and cold packs (what for?), MRE's (they taste like crap -- carry jars of peanut butter, Rye Crisp and dried fruit -- you can live indefinitely on that), garbage bag (unless you just want to use it to crawl inside to make it easier for people to dispose of your corpse. A compass and regional topo maps would be useful.
Forget the seeds -- what you have here will only get you through a couple of weeks at best. Considering the lack of reality in this list, my sense is that you don't have the skills or "survival" experience necessary to live long enough to plant anything.
The best prep for a disaster is a calm and reasonable frame of mind and a good bit of experience in camping and trekking with gear you are already familiar with. If you feel like you need to take a book along to teach you to survive, the odds are against you actually being able to do so.

- no need for a rifle, shotgun, and handgun; if your need a gun to hunt, it just pick a rifle or shotgun, depending what you plan on hunting in the area you will be in
- no need for three knives/multitools; a single multitool is fine for 99% of needs, the handsaw will take care of the rest
- no need for a life jacket, just stay away from any large bodies of water
- no need for trip wire...you wont be in Vietnam
- no need for a cooler; nothing will be cold enough to keep cool in the first place, and a cooler wont keep things cool for more than a day at most
- map and compass should be essentials
- I would add snowshoes if you plan on being in the mountains
- Add high strength duct tape and replace the shoe glue & superglue with Seam Grip, as it will cover mulitple needs and is better at sealing waterproof items
- dont forget fuel
There really isn't any point in putting together a general survival kit, unless you plan on getting lost without warning in the mountains. You really need to shape your gear around each trip depending on location and season. Plus, this is going to weigh probably upwards of 100 lbs, so won't be reasonable to carry around as an emergency measure. The fact is, you really can't count on any survival situation as being long term. To survive in the mountains in an emergency, you should focus on getting found or getting out ASAP.
EDIT: Judging by a couple of the answers below, I see some of us live in a fantasy world of paranoia and delusion. Don't worry, I promise zombies and the evil government won't be taking over the Earth and running us into the mountains any time soon.
@Bear Crap: None of those recent disasters you listed required long term survival in the mountains. I'm sure having 100 lbs of mountain survival gear would have helped those people in Pearl Harbor and during 9/11. The only one that required survival was MAYBE Katrina, for those that were too dumb to leave in the first place. All you needed to survive that was stocked food, water, and a pump. Stop living in a fantasy land where doomsday is lurking around the bend and only those with stockpiled "survival" gear will live. If you are really concerned, you should just build a well-stocked bunker, which would be far more useful than a duffel bag of toys from the Army surplus store. I think you "survival" nuts just like to play pretend! Of course there is a 1 in a billion chance a meteorite could knock out most life on Earth, but if that happens, you will end up dying anyway, and your survival skills will be irrelevant on the drastically changed planet. Like I said, I think you guys just like to gather a bunch of little "survival" toys like big useless knives, paracord, whistles, and other junk and play pretend...in fact you probably hope society breaks down because it would be "cool" to have to "survive" LMAO!

Christmas gift for a Marine deploying to Iraq? My boyfriend is leaving right after Christmas, and he's got everything he'll need, as this will be his second tour so he knows what he needs. He's got his amazing flashlight, gerber tool thing, a watch that does all kinds of crazy things... I'll send him his wet ones, porn, and chap stick while he's over.. but is there something I can get him before he leaves that he can take with him that will be special, or something really useful that he's not thinking of? I hate having to ask this question! I know him so well, I know tons of things I'd get him if he weren't leaving, but I don't know what to get him that he'd want to take over with him. We could DO something for his present, but I've only got 2 or 3 days with him, hopefully. I'd love to get him something really thoughtful that he'll use while he's over there and be able to think of me, something that he hadn't thought about needing, but I don't have a clue as to what this thing is. i was going to say the same thing on porn. nothing above maxium..... the rule is digtial only. no magzines ect. Email them, send them on a cd, or dvd, webcams which is the only thing i do because i don't want stuff in the wrong hands and because it works for my husband and i. You could really get him in a lot of trouble with porn and toys, though i know some guys that take toys. My best suggestion to you is to write a few love notes a special qoute or saying, i do bible verses that are about love for my hubby and fold them little and put them in a pants pocket and sorta all through his bag that he packed, so a few days over there he puts on a pair of pants and finds a note...... goes to dig in his hygenie kit and finds a note. little things like that. write a poem about him or do a painting or something that ur good at that is special to you and seal it in an envelope for him to open for xmas. he'll prolly keep it the whole tour. I made my husband a 'smell like me' kit, with my shampoo and deordant that i always wear so if he's having a down day he can 'smell' me with him. It's our first deployment and my cutise gay thing has been to send a ty bear a month, my first one had a note, i sent my kiss with him to you and the bear was either a love or a patriotic bear. they have one named hero, and slatue, casnova, things that describe my hubby so i pick one that fits him and send it. he'll bring them all home to me at the end and i'll have a collection started. It's the little things of home that make the difference hon, don't kill urself trying to think of ONE huge thing, you both probably wouldn't be able to handle that emotionally right now anyway. How bright is 3 lumens? I am looking to purchase the Gerber Recon-M Task Light (or regular recon). This light features 4 colors of LED lighting. The website lists the flashlight at 3 lumens. I am only looking to use this flashlight in house, namely a dark basement. Will this be sufficient? I had to do some research on this one.
We are going to start with a candle.

A 3 lumen light equals three birthday candles shining on something that is one square foot in size, one foot away.

It would seem to be not a very bright light source, but in a dark basement it will work better than a candle.

2 Flashlight questions? I have 2 questions for flashlight experts. I own a gerber lx 1.0 which my parents got me for xmas and I love it. It has a solid body and is bright. But it is pretty long at 7.5 inches and I was wondering if anyone know what kind of sheath or case I could get for it that fits it that I can wear on my belt. My 2nd question is I am looking for a good cheap led EDC flashlight to carry in my pocket. I would like it to have a clip and be bright and preferably a little weather proof. Any suggestions? thanks
