had a new heat pump installed a year ago hard duct wrapped in insulation flex going to vents? i keep expensive filters and change regularly for some reason on furniture there is white looking fuzz i dust and it comes back in a day my son is keeping upper respir. infections i can go in a dark room shine a flashlight over the vent and there will be lots of particles coming from the vent which makes me think that this is where my white fuzz and dust is coming from. The insulation being wrapped on the outside of the ductwork could it be getting inside somehow? Is there suppose to be particles flying up through the vents? Is the air handler in a crawl space or attic?
I had a customer once with a similar complaint. They complained about a fuzzy dust in the house.
I checked the filter grills and sure enough, fuzzy stuff.
The furnace was in the crawl space where they'd had the exposed portion of the foundation insulated with that blow-on stuff. And yes, it looked suspiciously similar.
I inspected the ductwork and, noted that none of the seams (S and drive) were selaed with tape.
I opened one of the flex duct lines to inspect what was in the supply ducts and found, you guessed it, quite a lot of the fuzzy stuff.
My prognosis was that the return ducting was not tight and pulled the fuzz (a.k.a. blown-on insulation) from the crawl space. Because they had return filter grills, the fuzz found the path to furnace, through the supply ducts, and into the home completely unfettered by any pesky filters.
So...
Is your air handler (or portions of the return duct) in an unoccupied space were there are dust sources such as loose insulation?
How far are your filters form the air handler? This stretch of duct would have a negative pressure. Anything 'sucked' into small cracks and holes would be passed unobstructed through the air handler, into the supply ducts, and then into the home.
The entire return duct would be negative pressure actually, but if the holes were before the filter, we'd be discussing low air flow. That assumes, of course, your filter is set tight.
If any of these conditions seem applicable to your situation, call around for a contractor that is willing to spend the extra effort to evaluate your situation.
Solutions could include sealing the ducts tightly and moving the filters to just before the air handler.
Also, try using 3m Filtrete pleated filters in place of your regular ones.
Consider installing a whole house HEPA air exchanger such as Broan's. Pricey, but I believe they truly deliver.
You might consider having the ducts cleaned AFTER you control the dust.
Regardless, concentrate on that unfiltered low-pressure zone between your filters and air handler. I'll bet you'll find your culprit there.
