Second life question? Ok I'm no conspiracy theorist but bear with me while I bore you. I played Second life for a few weeks before dipping out for various reasons... basically I had no real life people I knew in the program and I'm married, so after sex was nixed and shopping got old, I left. However, I did notice all sorts of well.. pentagrams?... Egyptian stuff, especially in sex sims and strip clubs, statues of gods and gargoyles, eye of Horus and heiroglyphs as 'wallpaper' in the most unusual places.. and the SL logo, a hand with an eye in the center? Also I noticed pretty quick you can do lots of naughty things... be a vampire, stripper, prostitute, pimp, lycan or warewolf, practice magic... be a shoppaholic, rapist, voyer or exhibitionist... but there's no place to be a cop, firefighter, cowboy, doctor, nurse, (what I mean is, what if your desire is to be a nurse in a hospital helping people, or a doctor performing surgeries, or someone who puts out fires... what about those fantasies? Are good fantasies not allowed, or just not wanted as much as having a 3some for example) feed starving kids, get therapy, get advice on life or love or anything else that would be honorable or help you be a better person in RL (real life). Ok now I know this is gonna strum a few people the wrong way; fact of the matter is there are lots of advocates for Secondlife. People make their livings there, have relationships, have used it as a dating site and found people which they actually married in RL and so forth. Also I get that it's a 'get away' from the real, and is a user created enviornment so anything I saw is basically up for interpretation. In fact I asked about it CASUALLY (seriously I wasn't being a troll or ass or creep about it), and got some hostility. People basically said, 'Ok sure... we're all heathens that worship idols and are going to hell is that what you're saying?' No, not saying that, just making an observation... So what do you guys think? It's obvious that Secondlife is created to provide all the things we can't endulge in, in real life and supposedly at a safe distance save a few exceptions when a few ppl met up in RL and it didn't turn out that good... but my question is, do you see any sponsorship by any people or organizations that have anything to do with a nastier motive or intention... maybe blur the line between ok, and not so ok? And is that up for interpretation depending on who's experience it is? Just asking so no nasty attacks. The question is a legitimate one and I'd be interested in the perspective of others... thanks! Anything where you have freedom to do what you want is always going to attract certain people with more dubious motives. We know for a fact that there have been people with paedophile fantasies active in Second Life, but as and when they are discovered, they are promptly banned and real life authorities notified of their actions. All the other sexual fantasies people indulge in in SL are (depending on where you live in the world) deemed acceptable, although I personally find very little acceptable (or even interesting) about forced rape role-play, but some people claim it's 'therapy'. The thing is, because there is a sense of 'freedom' about it, the Internet has always been stuffed full of things some of us consider to be unsavoury. Second Life also runs along those same lines of freedom, but it has policed itself to a point - insisting all things of an adult nature be relocated to adult rated areas and adding age verification before you can access such places.
As for people sponsoring things with a nastier motive or intention, well I guess that really depends what you consider to be a nasty intention. Hillary Clinton actually came into SL (in avatar form obviously) during her bid for Presidential candidate, trying to drum up support. If you are an American Republican, I guess you could interpret THAT as sinister! The UK Department of Work and Pensions has offices in SL. They claim it's there to offer advice for UK users of SL looking for RL work, but we all know it's there to see which Brits are making some tax-free money on the side - LOL.
What I DO find sinister is the increasing number of fundamentalist Christian groups that are cropping up in SL. I have a suspicion that the Jehovah's Witnesses are in here too. I have already seen one young person get brainwashed by the crazy gay-hating Christians in SL.
To be perfectly honest, with a few exceptions, the majority of my friends in SL are not interested in sex games, rape, international paganism or anything like that.
One thing you may be very unaware of is the Relay For Life organisation in SL. It was set up several years ago to raise money for the American Cancer Society and last year it raised $222,000 in real world money. You don't have to have (or have had) cancer to be a part of this incredible event, but it's something that affects most of us. My father died of cancer and so did my best friend in SL. I DJ and host music events during the Relay season and I take part it the virtual walks. I buy lots of things from designers who donate the proceeds to RFL and I throw money into the donation kiosks too. When I remember my dad and my friend - especially during the survivors lap of the track - I cry my eyes out, but I have a lot of fun too and I know we are making a difference for the better. If nothing else, SL provides a place where people with cancer, or other illnesses and disabilities can come to feel whole again - a place where they meet those who share and understand their difficulties and where they play as equals with those who are healthy and well.
Currently, there's also the Japan Relief Fund in SL. Before that the New Zealand Aid fund. Because Second Life is global, those of us who are there for more than some selfish sexual relief act globally. Just the very act of talking to someone who lives in a different part of the world changes us and broadens our horizons.
So yes, there is sponsorship of sorts, but they are actions really. In the case of Relay For Life in SL, it's things we do together to make the real world a better place.

Does Jerry Lewis get paid millions of dollars to do the telethon ? I have worked for years collecting money for jerry's Kids because I am a firefighter. One day a guy told me that Jerry lewis does not do that out of his love for Jerry's kids but that he is paid Millions of dollars to do the telethon each year. If that is true i think I would like to collect for some other causes because when we collected for katrina victims and the Snunami victims the Jerry Lewis people (muscular dystrophy) made a big deal that we could not use the boots to collect and that they had the boot as their logo. We had to have our union go out for 9/11, katrina and the Snunami victims and get buckets made which really seemed disengenuous to me. Then I was told that since the Snunami victims money was collected so close to the telethon the MS people wanted to keep ALL of the money rather than keeping the typical yearly amount collected and giving the extra which was obviously meant for Snunami victims to the intended victims. After that I sort of stopped. MDA uses 76.4 cents for services, clinics, and research. MDA is constantly ranked by Money magazine as one of the best managed non-profits. You need to check your info people. MDA and Jerry Lewis have never paid any of the stars to come on the Telethon, everyone , including Jerry Lewis himself is a volunteer. Thanks to MDA research, they have found the genetic cause of all 43 diseases they cover, and the families they cover are grateful. MDA research is responsible for the first gene being coded, tons of research on body building and strengthening. MDA is the number one funder of reaserch for ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. can you wear firefighter t-shirts? okay so i have this friend,, who sometimes goes out the house in t-shirt with our city fire logo on it and company number like this(http://www.elliottsportswear.biz/catalog/userfiles/image/18.jpg) he also wears blue pants(not dress) and black boats. the uniform looks exactly like the ones our fireman wear... now he does not wear a badge or have one... and does not tell anyone hes a fireman... in fact he dress like everyone else its just the combination of clothes is the type our firefighter wear...... is this illegal the state is md. not at all illegal. a bit weird if he's trying to look like a fire fighter.

What happened to MLK's dream of equality? Things seem distorted to me. If you score higher on your tests shouldn't you get the job regardless of race? Welcome to reality. As a firefighter I know exactly what you mean. We have quotas that force the department to hire substandard firefighters just because of the color of their skin.
@ELLE: If you were white and didn't score 95% or better on the entry exam in my city, you could kiss the job goodbye because the only way a white male gets on the job is being in the top 5%. It took me years to score that high and every time I took that test, people who scored lower were accepted ahead of me simply because the city needed to keep up their stats.

Im originally from boston and would love one Sorry I answered someone elses with a question. I am looking for a Red sox tee shirt that also has the Boston fire department name on it. I am a firefighter on the west coast but Im from Boston. This sounds like a custom made shirt, and not one you'll find on these "generic" t-shirt sites. You're best bet, is to try to contact E-37's firehouse, and see if the t-shirt is available thru them. If Boston is like Chicago, there are several stations who have shirts made up to sell to visiting firemen, buffs, or whoever just walks in to visit. These shirts aren't even available at the fire commissary. So, give em a call..if they don't have them, I'm sure they can point you in the right direction!
