What are some extra tools you carry in your firefighter gear? I am getting into the fire service, and some people have told me some extra things to carry in my gear just in case, like an extra flashlights or wire cutter. i was wondering if anyone had any special tools they carried that some people wouldn't think of. I carry a pair of extrication gloves (heavy leather) in addition to my fire gloves, as well as a flashlight, a roll of duct tape, a pair of channel-lock pliers, a 15 foot length of nylon rope, and on my truck belt I have a short-handled axe, a utility wrecking bar, and another pair of pliers. My belt also had multiple attachment rings for safety lines, as well as for other gear as the situation requires.

Is it possible for a person with one to be a volunteer firefighter in the state of Michigan? I am concerned because there is a man who says he is a "full fledged" firefighter and he has only one arm and cannot even give CPR. Yet he shows up at accidents and medical, fire calls constantly. He also has firefighters gear that he wears. His arm is gone from the shoulder. He cannot put his gear on by himself. He could be someone who has been on the department for sometime, maybe even before a physical ability test. I would say it is safe to assume that if he was applying today, he would be washed out in the hiring process. If you are concerned enough about your safety, I would bring it up to the chief or a city offical. I'm not saying someone with one cannot be a firefighter, just the hiring process today is very tough.
As for CPR, it would be very difficult with one arm.

What is the best firefighter turn-out gear?? What is your opinion of the best firefighter's turn out gear out on the market today??? Globe and Morning Pride have the best in my opinion. I've worn both and have been pleased with the durability and protection of both manufacturers. If I had to narrow it down to just one though I would say Globe.

Is all the gear supplied in firefighter 1 training? im a volunteer going for firefighter 1 in either feb or spring, i have gear right now that's a little too big & i was wondering if the $ for the classes & such include gear to train in? thanks in advance This is in the wrong section.

Anyone have a firefighter pumping notecard they keep in their gear? Im looking for a notecard to keep in my turnout gear that has all the pumo info on it as a quick look. I've seen alot of people use them just never been able to find one online

Firefighter gear bag suggestions? I have just received a turnout gear bag. It is large enough to fit all of my gear in the main compartment and it still has room on the sides for more. I am looking for suggestions as to what i can put in these. So far some of the ideas i have are water, cleaning supplies, extra change of clothes. Any suggestions would be great. Thank You. BTW I put this in the police category because i found no firefighting category. Extra underwear, toiletries (for when you get dispatched out-of-area), flashlight, extra batteries, snack (granola-type) bars, a book, for when you are bored on standby, do you wear contacts (extra cleaning solution), gum (or breath mints)
And you're right, I am not sure why there is no fire fighter category...

in my dept in Calif we get a lot of used gear from the state and federal gov. surplus.
in most areas equipment going to be sold as surplus is first offered to other local, state and federal agencies,
many times for free,
this allows my dept to spend our money on the fancy equipment.
it also allows are dept to make ambulance's runs free to local residents.
we only charge drunk drivers for ambulance runs.

What is the weight of the gear a firefighter wears? i need to know this info so I can train effectively Hey bro,
i've been in the "firefighting" business for quite a while now (about 4 years), and i still don't know what the weight of the gear is:)
i mean, i'm with the civil defense in lebanon (you know, that overseas country that's always on riots and fire ans war:) so our training is limited to this: "here's the situation, DEAL WITH IT!" :)
all right maybe you won't be THAT lucky, but here's the deal:
you do realize that firefighting is way beyond just "fighting fire", so i suggest you keep in mind some of the challenging stuff you'd have to go through, you know, in order to get the best training possible:
- carrying heavy equipment up multi storey blocks
- lifting or dragging heavy unconscious people (that should add "some" extra weight to the gear:)
- being able to work in confined spaces where flexibility is almost impossible
- running out lines of hose (maybe it's coz i'm a chick, but man those things get heavy on the long run!)
- lifting and pitching heavy ladders;
- practicing your cardio endurance, oxygen tanks don't last forever, you'll need to practice controlled breathing
and last but not least
Breaking through hefty doors with heavy breaking in gear (that does NOT mean to ravage every door in the neighborhood!)
aand much much more i'm afraid
i'm really sorry i couldn't give you a number, just keep in mind that what you're training for is far beyond physical: i'm a 25 year old female, i may not be the "strongest" physical-wise, but when i'm on the field, i'm one of the best (and that's not just MY opinion:)) it's about dealing with crisis, one cold (and i mean "frozen-cold") step at a time

Firefighter gear question? I joined my local department a few weeks ago and I was issued turnout gear, Boots,Jacket, Helmet and Gloves, my problem is that they do not match,the jacket is tan with white reflectors and the pants are black with silver reflectors, I want know from a firefighter if this really matters, I know I am still green but it kind of bothers me...thanks for looking It doesn't if they offered the level of protection, But ask the guys at your station about it, ask about colors and which is older---even just look at their turnouts to see if they're mismatched. If they are, don't worry about it.
As for reflector colors,well my Dad was F.D for thirty years, and the guys had Orange, Yellow and White reflectors, but they always had the same turnouts. At his station, Rank was determined by helmet size and paint scheme and Experience was determined by how smokey you got your turnouts.
