For the price you can't beat the features of the Fenix LD01 - I haven't seen it sell for under $50 though - and it uses a AAA battery so it's easier and cheaper to replace than the CR123's that are common for these high end lights. Flashlight or knife? I want to do some hardcore camping in the summer and am having trouble deciding if i want a large survival/ utility knife or a really good flashlight that i can also carry with me on a day to day basis. Cold steel SRK and for the flashlight Fenix P3D As of now i don't have a large survival camp knife and only have a large 2D cell Maglite. yea. you can do a lot more with a knife. i carry one every day and use it multiple times per day. it always comes in handy. cant remember the last time i used a flashlight. but if youre camping, you might need a flashlight to find your knife.

For self-defense, the flashlight I prefer is a nice 3-Cell D MAGLITE with an LED inserted. Fits nicely into the palm of my hand, and has a lot of weight for that outstanding skull-cracking effect. Tough-won't shatter if you drop it down three stories onto the steel deck of Shaft Alley (I speak from personal experience), or if you repeatedly brain some one assaulting you (I'm guessing). Plus, the LED is bright enough to blind people in the dark, gives you plenty of illumination so afterwards you can examine the soft mush that was once the head of your attacker. You can even start to clean off the blood if you remove the lens and take it into candle mode!
In conclusion, if you want self-defense from a Flashlight, you want a MAGLITE. Just my opinion, of course.

They are great and very affordable. A lot do not like the color of the beam but depending on the model the focus is great (very important).
They are solid, miserly on battery use and bright.
