Shake Flashlight- No Batteries- Simply Shake to RechargeShake Flashlight- No Batteries- Simply Shake to Recharge : The Forever Flashlight uses no batteries or bulbs. Instead it uses Faraday's Principle of Magnetic Induction and a bright LED to produce light without batteries. The flashlight is shaken for about 30 seconds to recharge a capacitor and it will then provide about 5-7 minutes of light. How does this happen? As the flashlight is shaken, a magnet passes through a metal coil which, when you shake, "induces" voltage in the coil generating electricity. During prolonged use it can be shaken for 10-15 seconds every 2 or 3 minutes for bright light. The light requires no maintenance so it can be left in your home or car for years, but will still be ready to produce light. The bright LED will last for thousands of hours and does not burn-out like a typical lightbulb- it should never need replacement. Great for home, car, camper, boat, or emergencies. Imagine exploring without of fear of ever running out of light. No need to worry about light if your car dies during a dark and stormy night. You'll be in great shape even if you have to signal for help in the pouring rain because it's 100% waterproof and it even floats! It gives you a powerful beam of light visible for up to a mile. This is a flashlight that never needs batteries, replacement parts or even bulbs for that matter. Now that's peace of mind. Features: Super bright blue/white LED bulb. Powered by principles of Faraday's Principle of Induction. Never needs batteries, vever needs bulbs, maintenance free. Save money- never have to buy batteries. 100% Waterproof case & even floats in water. Light visible for up to one mile. Great for cars, boats, campers, homes, cottages and all emergency kits. 30 seconds of shaking powers LED for 5-7 minutes. Dimensions 11" x 1.75". Model No: SF100. Weight: 2.25 Lbs.$4.99

If I absent-mindedly shake my Faraday flashlight too long, will it explode? Sometimes while I'm sitting there watching a movie or what have you, just as a habit I'll find myself absent-mindedly picking up my Faraday flashlight and shaking it back & forth to produce a charge. I've also thought about little ideas for shaking them while doing other things just for economy sake - such as, for instance, attaching one to a tire so that it shakes at about a thousand shakes per second for five miles. ;-)
So what happens if it's got a full charge but you just keep shaking it? And how long does it take to reach that point? :-?
Well, that was much too quick of an answer to be very satisfactory to my ornery little curious mind. ;-) It's accurate, I do believe, but still - I want to make trouble. ;-) So if I took the resistor out of a standard faraday flashlight, how much shaking would it take to cause a problem, and what sorts of problems would it cause? :-?
(Thank you, btw, for answering so quickly and accurately - I appreciate it!
Good Luck!
Faraday Flashlight circut? I'm making a faraday flashlight like here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Shake-it-like-a-Tic-Tac!/ . before i start soldering, could someone tell me if this circut would work?

Your new "international standard for drawing circuit diagrams" is a bit too complicated for us geeks.... ;-)
I assume it should look like this
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/9163/circuit1qu3.png
But it's all wrong!
a) The 2 diodes top/left and bottom/left must be reversed.
b) The LED must be reversed.
c) There must be a permanent magnet inside the inductor coil. This magnet must move freely when you shake the mint box.
How can Faraday induction coil ('forever flashlight) be adapted for emrgency lighting in blackouts? well i hate to break it to you, but my dad has 3 of these advertised shake and use flashlights. if you look closely, there are 3 button cell batteries near the top. these power a single led. the sad news is you would have to shake this flash light very fast for a very long time in order to build a decent charge. I have taken one apart and the batteries continue to power the led WEEKS after removing the coil. The fact is an led can be powered for 10,000 hours off of one battery. can you say RIPOFF?
how come a Faraday flashlight isn't as bright as a maglite or even an ordinary flashlight? Also, how come they don't come in miniature size? It has to do with the amount of charge that you can generate through the 'shaking'. They can be as bright as you want to design them but with such a low charge rate you would have to shake them for hours to store enough 'charge'. That is also the restriction on size since the size of the 'coils' determine the rate of charge. They are an engineering compromise large enough to be useful but small enough to 'shake'.
faraday flashlight? i just got a faraday flashlight for christmas. i shook it for about 2 minutes, and left it sit here turned on. it's been on for nearly 12 hours strait now. it's still bright. how is this possible? i know it uses a supercapacitor, but how has it lasted this long? yeah, it has a coil, a magnet, two diodes, a super cap, an LED, and a resistor. but still 12 hours on one charge and it's still going strong? How possible? my first guess would be that is has a battery rather than a supercap, and it arrived partially charged. If it is a capacitor, then it too, would have to have been partially charged. There is not enough energy in two minutes of shaking to run even the most efficient LED. Run in all the way down try it again, and let us know.
who invented the faraday flashlight, and when was it invented? the faraday flashlight also know as a shake, or mechanical flashlight

Scale up the Faraday Flashlight model for household applications? I want to build a unit large enough to be able to recharge a battery powering an inverter so I can run regular 110-120V appliances. I'm thinking something that will harness the rotational power of a bicycle (21+ gears) and move a magnet thru the solenoid (either direct rotation at the wheel, OR movement in a verticle tube and use an upward force to move the magnet up, with gravity pulling it back down, to simulate shaking) to generate the electricity to recharge a battery.
I'm wondering why this hasn't yet been done and think it could be impracticle if not impossible. But I can't get the idea out of my head.
Can anyone see anything wrong with this idea?
I have the battery (12v, 4.5 A) and inverter. I have a solar panel but that takes too much time to recharge.
If you "average guy" level of fitness, you can generate maybe 200 watts for an hour. Maybe. As you build up your fitness, if you achieve professional bike racer levels of endurance, you could up that to 300 watts for 8 hrs. To generate that power, you would have to eat something on the order of 8000 calories per day (assuming around 1000 calories per hour). Charging a battery, assuming no power losses, you could then run one 100W light bulb for 24 hrs. Tomorrow, you get to do the same thing again.
Happy riding!
How can I use Faraday principles to generate a certain amount of voltage, ideally 12 volts? Faraday's law (as in the energy generation used in those shake flashlights).
I'm trying to rig a fan as created in this youtube video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klTfk6L7o6o]. But I'd like to use the faraday/shake flashlight "battery" instead.
Hey, this is a great question.
You'll need an iron nail and a wire copper coil. You can find a length of copper wire at almost any craft store, and the nail can be found at any Lowe's or Home Depot. Using a hammer, nail the nail into a piece of plywood. Then, wrap the wire around the nail. Now, you should be able to move the board up and down and generate a current.
Didn't the Faraday Flashlight used to be called the "Everlast Flashlight"? Or Everlight flashlight or something like that? I could have swore it was, and if so, does anyone know why they changed their name? These flashlights are now available under many names. You can find them under both "Faraday" and "Everlast" if you do a Yahoo! search.
how does the faraday flashlight work? A current in a wire creates a magnetic field around the wire. The reverse is also true, and that is what is used here. A magnet moves in a coil of wire. The fluctuating magnetic field induces a current in the wire. Store that in a battery, or use it to power a lightbulb.
