Where can I get a dynamo for my science project? Hello, I am comparing three different types of energy by building three generators (hydro, solar, and wind). I will be measuring the efficiency of all three, so I will need three dynamos (I think) to produce energy into the ammeter and voltmeter. All I see is just cycle dynamos, and flashlight dynamos. How do I get a simple, cheap dynamo that I can attach to the windmill and watermill I will attach it to? Look for ones with a long shaft so you can mount the fan or water wheel, possibly http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102827 would work, but you need to get a piece of PVC plastic sprinkler pipe to hold the motor, maybe use matching diameter PVC elbows and another PVC pipe to hold it in position. The base could be wood, drilled with a hole to hold the PVC pipe upright. Making the water wheel and fan could take a lot of time.
The solar panel generates electricity directly, so needs no dynamo, just the resistor, voltmeter and ammeter. Shine a 100 watt lamp (2.6% efficiency or 2 .6 watts effective) onto the solar panel. Calculate the efficiency as Efficiency = Output Power ( x Watts) / Input Power (2.6 watts)

I haven't taken a dynamo flashlight apart yet, but I believe that the dynamo itself is actually shaped like a? Question 1- If the dynamo's circular edge had a diameter of 2 inches, how many watts per minute could it produce if it was really well put together, and how expensive would it be? Question 2- If this expensive dynamo was used continuously, how long would it last- and if I paid more for it, could it ever be made to last indefinitely?- and if it's a matter of the magnets within dying, would another magnetic source nearby be able to refuel it? Thank you! I took a dynamo flashlight apart, it used a permanent magnet motor as a generator. The hand crank had 3 rows of gears to increase the crank speed to the armature shaft. A bridge rectifier is used to allow the crank to be turned either clockwise or counterclockwise and still charge the metal hydride battery. A voltage regulator is used to prevent overcharging the battery. The brushes in the dynamo are what will fail. They are cleverly designed to be made cheap. Even if the dynamo were made better the battery would be the limiting element. They can only be recharged so many times. There is nothing in the design of the one I took apart that has any overcharge protection.

Anyone know of a hand-crank/dynamo flashlight that can also charge an iPhone? I have survived a few hurricanes without power, it can get get annoying winding things. Go for solar power for your phone with maybe wind up for a backup. There are also solar powered florescent lights that you can read by, keep the two separate in your priorities. What are planning on doing that you will need alternate power?

Where can I buy a hand cranked generator like the ones you find in flashlights? I'm doing a project that uses one of these dynamos and I don't want to cannibalize an existing flashlight. Here's one that used to be used on bikes. Just put a handle on the end and a lamp on the other end for your demo.

mechanical LED flashlights? According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyno_torch), a mechanically powered flashlight (or dyno torch) has a device called the flywheel that can store energy. From this, the user squeezes a handle to operate a small dynamo which supplies an electrical current to a miniature incandescent bulb for it to operate. My questions are: 1. How much energy does it store in the flywheel? 2. How much energy do we produce every time we sqeeze the handle? 3. Much thanks! 1. the energy is stored in the spinning of the wheel. Kind of like when you coast in your car. The real power is coming from the magnet rolling over the copper coils making a generator.
2. Very little. But if you made the setup better with real bearings and precession gears you could pull a lot more. Maybe around 1/4 watt.
3.Not even close to making the power needed to run a fan. Maybe again with a precession setup. Then i believe you would still have to use the hang pump to charge a battery .Then run the fan off the battery after you pumped it a number of times. More along the lines of hand powered radios.

9V motor with dynamo !!? Hi, I have a school project and I need to make a 9V motor work without a conventional battery! so I decided to take a dynamo from a flashlight (to make the energy with my hand), but it's written 3.2 V on the capacitor (in the flashlight)... so my question is if I take that dynamo with a 3.2V capacitor, will it work when I connect my wirings to my motor or it will just... explode!! thanks for the help!

How much power does a dynamo generate? I'm talking the ones on dynamo powered flashlights. Preferrably in joule or watts. Also i would like to know if it's per crank/second/whatever A bit of physics first. Joules are units of energy, but power is energy delivered in a given time, so joules divided by seconds (which is actually watts), gives a unit of power, which is what you want. Without knowing the size of the flashlight bulb, one can only give a guess, but say it is a 6V bulb, drawing 0.25A, then its wattage is 6 x 0.25 = 1.5 watts. That is the continuous rate at which your dynamo would have to deliver energy to illuminate the bulb continuously, whether it be cranked or rotated

how the battery free flashlight dynamo works-dynamo unclear , apparently no flux change? disassemblying the flashlight if not mistaken i found out the coil is motionless and the magnet shaped as coin is rotating while applying the crank,however both the coin magnet and the coil are parallel and the center of the coil and of the rotating coin are the two point of the line of axis of rotation thus no flux lines are cut by the rotating coil. the same flux lines are circling in the envelope of the mathematical cylinder containg the wire of the coil! how thus the voltage induced in the coil? Are you sure about the direction of the field from the coin? Check it by putting it under a sheet of paper and sprinkle iron filings on the paper to see the filed lines. Do it with the coin parallel to the paper and with the coin perpendicular to the paper to see the field patterns.

I know because I have one in my power out emergency kit, Bought it only 3 months ago.
They work real well.
