1806 - Ora Quinto di Notte - The Fifth Hour of the Night - Antique French Engraving by Louis CroutelleLouis Croutelle was a French line-engraver, who executed chiefly book-plates and vignettes, was born in Paris in 1765, and was a pupil of Delaunay. Among his most interesting works is an allegorical portrait of Voltaire, published in the Kehl edition of the philosopher's works, proofs of which are extremely rare. He died in Paris in 1829. This etching is from the series "The Six Hours of the Day and Six Hours of the Night" which was originally comprised of 12 incredibly gorgeous etchings (of which I currently have 10 available (separately or as a group, see below, this listing is for one only) with imagery based on the work of the famous Renaissance artist, Raphael. Each features an allegorical figure of a graceful, floating woman draped in a gown set against a black sky holding an item or animal suggesting a particular time of day or night. Each incorporates a predella scene in the lower border depicting scenes of animals, some fanciful, such as a squirrel driving a chariot pulled by a blue bird, and some more realistic, such as two dogs hunting a goat, relating to the respective times of day and night. According to Killikelly, the scenes of animals in each predella also relate to the moods and activities associated with the times of day and night. The swan depicted in the First Hour of Day, the dove in the Second Hour, and the ram in the Fourth Hour, are associated with Venus. The bristly animals in the Fourth Hour of Night and the panther symbolize “the double nature of love” and the squirrel teasing the snake in the First Hour of Night, jealousy. The snake entwined around the altar in the Fifth Hour of Day signifies health or prosperity. The lizard in the First Hour of Night is “the good angel of the sleeper” guarding “the urn containing diseases, evil dreams, etc.” The rooster in the Sixth Hour of Night stands before a tripod with a flame, “the altar of the Penates, or household gods, the symbol of peaceful home life.” By the late 19th century, the fresco paintings that these prints were based upon no longer existed and their origins were a mystery, though they have been consistently attributed to Raphael. In 1885, the scholars Joseph Archer Crowe and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle posited that Raphael may have made the original sketches, incorporating female figures identical to those found in the ancient Roman wall decorations, but that the frescoes were actually executed by his apprentices in the Sala Borgia at the Vatican. Crowe and Cavalcaselle's theory rests on a “rare print by Montagnani” made in 1790, showing the ceiling decoration of the room with “frescoes of the twelve figures of the Hours in threes, on two sides of the rectangle, resting, as handed down to us in the copper-plates engraved by Fosseyeux and his comrades in 1805 and 1806, not on the air, but on flowers rising from antique meanders.” Soon after the prints were made, they believed, the Hours frescoes were covered by the stucco decorations that were there when they wrote their book. ♥*´¨) (¸.•´♥ This is an original from 1808, not a scan or copy. The lizard in the First Hour of Night is “the good angel of the sleeper” guarding “the urn containing diseases, evil dreams, etc.” The rooster in the Sixth Hour of Night stands before a tripod with a flame, “the altar of the Penates, or household gods, the symbol of peaceful home life.” By the late 19th century, the fresco paintings that these prints were based upon no longer existed and their origins were a mystery, though they have been consistently attributed to Raphael. In 1885, the scholars Joseph Archer Crowe and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle posited that Raphael may have made the original sketches, incorporating female figures identical to those found in the ancient Roman wall decorations, but that the frescoes were actually executed by his apprentices in the Sala Borgia at the Vatican. Crowe and Cavalcaselle's theory rests on a “rare print by Montagnani” made in 1790, showing the ceiling decoration of the room with “frescoes of the twelve figures of the Hours in threes, on two sides of the rectangle, resting, as handed down to us in the copper-plates engraved by Fosseyeux and his comrades in 1805 and 1806, not on the air, but on flowers rising from antique meanders.” Soon after the prints were made, they believed, the Hours frescoes were covered by the stucco decorations that were there when they wrote their book. ♥*´¨) (¸.•´♥ This is an original from 1808, not a scan or copy. Lafalee (available)(Ora quarta di giorno) Carrying a sun-dial, a symbol of the afternoon hours. Fifth Hour; LF Mariage (available)(Ora quinta di giorno) The figure carries grains and points to the sun that disappears. Fourth Hour; FJ Dequevauvillier (available)(Ora quarta di notte) With Venus in the background, carries an owl, sacred to the Greek goddess of wisdom, Minerva, symbolizing the secrets that are revealed to those who seek inspiration in the stillness of the night. Fifth Hour; L. Croutelle (available)(Ora quinta di notte) Wingless and crowned with flowers, the figure pours dew as a symbol of the blessings of the night. (the urn is like one of the three figures preceding the chariot of Aurora, painted by Guercino in the Villa Ludoviso in Rome). Sixth Hour; N.
