I know Katherine Dunham was black and part native american. what tribe did she belong to Cherokee, Cree what? I looking up information for school on the famous dancer katherine Dunham. Her mother was par freench candian and Native american. But was she cherokee, cree, what was her heritage? Does any body know? Fanny June Guillaume is a descendent of the Huron tribe.
What is an interesting fact about the Cree tribe? i need one fun fact about the tribe, ANYTHING WOULD HELP AT THIS POINT! please and thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's a few:
- the Cree are one of the few First Nations who have a language not considered at risk and still largely spoken
- the Cree are one of the three largest tribes in North America
- the name Cree actually originates in that one of the Cree groups was the first to convert to Christianism (giving them the designation "Christinaux" by the Catholic missionaries). Crees usually refer to themselves as "Eenou or Eeyou", meaning "men"
- the Cree have groups present from Quebec all the way to Alberta and even in northern parts of Montana
- the Cree in Quebec signed what is considered by many to be the first "modern-day treaty" known as the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement signed by the Cree, the Inuit, Quebec and Canada
- the Cree word for white man is "whem-stook-ooshoo", meaning "from the Island, or from the wooden island" because of the wooden ships the Europeans arrived on.
Cheers.
is the cree tribe an american indian? the cree tribe They are part of the Algonquian tribes and they are from Canada
how do i start getting benfits from the untied states when i am in the cherokee and cree tribe? how do i get the papers to start filling out for benfits
Brianna,
As already suggested in your other questions of this nature, you need to start with your tribe of enrollment. You cannot be "in" two tribes. Yes, you can be OF two (or more) tribes but you can only be enrolled in ONE tribe. That's both a US and tribal law. So, again, go to your tribe of enrollment. There is only one "benefit" from the United States for enrolled tribal members/citizens and that is access to Indian Health Services. In order to access IHS you need to provide copies of your tribal enrollment paperwork. You get your paperwork from your tribe of enrollment.
If you are not enrolled then you need to get enrolled before you are eligible for IHS. Only enrolled members/citizens of federally recognized tribes are eligible for IHS. There are only 3 federally recognized Cherokee tribes in the US and one Cree tribe in the US (the other Cree tribes are in Canada and don't qualify for US-based programs):
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma
Eastern Band of Cherokee of North Carolina
United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee
Rocky Boy Chippewa-Cree Tribe
You need to determine which of these tribes your family descends from, contact the tribe directly and request an enrollment packet. If you meet the enrollment requirements you need to complete the paperwork and return it to the tribe. The tribe will make the determination of whether or not you are ultimately enrolled. Assuming that you are you will receive your enrollment certification which can be used to access IHS.
What are the animals of the Cree tribe? I think It have very many animal We can't count
What website could i go to so i can registure with the Cree tribe? Usually you have to do that in person at the Tribal Administration Office for whatever tribe you are applying to. You will need all your supporting documents to prove you have the necessary genealogy
Algonquin Tribe, Cree Tribe, Huron Tribe, Ojibwe Tribe, the Neurtal or Petun tribe, which should I choose? ... for my assignment Considering that I made this question as simple as possible, from what I can see so far I shouldn't take any of these answers seriously. Obviously because I was so specific, I chose these tribes for a reason, they are in Ontario, all I wanted to know was which one you would advise. Algonquin Tribe are a very popular tribe so you probably get information easily. Or there another tribe you can try it's the Innus tribe. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Innus
I need some "Cree" tribe facts? ( the culture and the tribe's region)? Description of the tribe's region.
a. Where the tribe is or was located
b. Ways the tribe adapted to their environment.
2. The tribe's culture
a. How they lived
b. What they ate
c. What they did for work and fun
d. What tools or weapons they used
:) Please helppp. Or give a website to where I can find these answers and such.
5 pts to whoever helps, thanks!

Canadian history about the Woodland Cree Tribe - did they have clans? I'm trying to finish up my history homework and I've hit the books and the internet but I can't find one particular answer... did the Woodland Cree have clans within the tribe? I know they had many bands, does that count? Or who were leaders of the clan?
I'm a little confused. Please offer facts and opinions! (Just tell me which one it is.)
No they didn't have a clan system.
But there are Oji-Cree (Ojibwa-Cree) and they many follow a clan system.
.
How do i join my indian tribe? I'm Cree? I am 1/16th native american. My family tells me that we belong to the cree tribe, i want to become an offical memeber of my tribe but im not exactly sure how. Can anyone help me out or get me started on how to become a memeber????
Well first of all you will need to prove you have 'Cree blood' so you need to research your family tree, this is a website which gives you some information and I am sure there are many others which will help by explaining what you need to do

Teen Boys Traditional Dance BEST 2011 Perkins Powwow 0337. Teen Boys Traditional Dance. Originating with the Om aha Tribe, this dance was given to the Sioux (several bands), Southern Cheyenne, Southern Arapaho, the Crow, Cree, and many other tribes at the Omaha Indian Congress of 1898 as the Crow or Raven Dance. Red paint on the forehead indicated (honors) returning (and sunburned) warriors from their wars and raids. Red Streaks on their horses and bare bodies indicated wounds received in battle. At first, the warriors sneak up to the enemy, then charge in a straight line in a steady gallop, do not circle back, hop (or skip) their horses and occasionally signal their intentions. (Contemporary Dancers now hop and skip around). 2011 Perkins Powwow. 2011 Iowa Tribe Powwow. Time 12:03 AM Sunday 6 19 11.
Uktena Cherokee Myth The Horned Serpent was venerated, in various forms, by the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek, just to name a few. Some myths say it is invisible, or that it brought rain and made a noise similar to (but not the same as) thunder. Those who know say the Uktena is a great snake, as large around as a tree trunk, with horns on its head, and a bright blazing crest like a diamond on its forehead, and scales glowing like sparks of fire. It has rings or spots of color along its whole length, and can not be wounded except by shooting in the seventh spot from the head, because under this spot are its heart and its life. The blazing diamond is called Ulun suti Transparent and he who can win it may become the greatest wonder worker of the tribe. But it is worth a man s life to attempt it, for whoever is seen by the Uktena is so dazed by the bright light that he runs toward the snake instead of trying to escape. As if this were not enough, the breath of the Uktena is so pestilential, that no living creature can survive should they inhale the tiniest bit of the foul air expelled by the Uktena. Even to see the Uktena asleep is death, not to the hunter himself, but to his family. Horned serpents (rattlesnakes) tied together on a Mississippian sandstone plate from the Moundville Archaeological Site According to Sioux belief, the Unktehila ( c ila) are dangerous reptilian water monsters that lived in old times. They were of various shapes. In the end the Thunderbirds destroyed them
