Does anyone know of a place that offers either Inuktitut or Cree language lessons in Ottawa? I want to learn one or both of those languages. I know UofO and Carleton both on occasion offer courses in those languages, but they aren't offering them at the moment. I'm looking to take lessons preferably starting in January and ending no later then the end of April. Meegwetch! (Thanks) No. Sorry I can't help but I think it's wonderful you've decided to learn languages like Inuktitut or Cree (to any degree). I fell in love with Inuktitut about a year ago. I can't speak a word of it, but learned to read, and studied the grammar for a while. Very interesting language, and it sounds very unique. Best of luck in your efforts to learn such rare (and endangered) languages.

How to get Indian Status in Canada (read description)? To start things off I'm not some random white person that doesn't want to pay taxes, I just would like some clarification. My great grand parents (on my mothers side) were Cree from northern Alberta, last names Cardinal and Lavallee. Both Families were offered to go on a reserve but refused, do to the small amount of land they would have been given, for refusing the following generations never obtained Status since they (my grand parents) refused to go on the reserve. But if they had accepted the offer to go on the reserve basically my whole family on mothers side would have status. I know their extremely picky when it comes to people with no immediate family living on a reserve to get status, and certain members of my family have been trying for years to reason with the Aboriginal Affairs of Canada. I'm not looking for Metis membership because that wasn't what was offered to my family back then. Is there any way at all this is relevant in getting recognized as Status Indian.
No, you can't gain Indian Status.
The first legislation that granted Indian Status to the descendants of those who lost their status (through various means) had a cut off date of 1951.
Anyone who lost or renounced their status prior to that year were not eligible for reinstatement of their "Indian Status" under the 1985 Bill C-31.
That involved a substantial population. Anything Canada does not want is more Indians.

I am unsure of my Karate School could someone help me? I have been taking karate for three years now and I have had a weird feeling about my Karate teacher and his wife. I do not think that they are teaching karate properly. I am just going to describe what my karate place is like.
So instead of calling my teacher Sensei we call him Master and address him as "sir" and his wife as "mam". Every time we enter and exit the room we have to bow. At the start and end of every class we always recite a "student cree" (different for starting and ending).
For testing days, they sit and judge our skills we have learned as a *insert color* belt. If we know it all well then we can graduate to the next belt. On testing days, there are a few younger kids who do not perform a kick or a punch properly (as in it is not strong enough or not accurate to the target) and still pass on testing day.
I have just graduated to blue belt and I know a few things in karate that everyone has heard of. I know how to do a roundhouse kick, sidekick, front kick, reverse sidekick (also back kick i think), hook kick, front punch, ridge hand, back ridge hand. lunge punch, back punch, and tornado kick. I also know how to perform "basics" and "forms" that my cousins (who take karate) or anyone else from a different karate school have never heard of. For example, I know how to do purple belt basics 1 (front punch, lunge punch, reverse sidekick, back punch), 2 (hook kick, back roundhouse kick, reverse sidekick, back punch), 3 (roundhouse kick, reverse sidekick, front kick, back ridge hand). Also I know many "forms" including Chung Yi Form (sp?) which no one has heard of.
The schedule splits the week into "A" days and "B" days. On "B" days, we practice our forms and combinations and on "A" days, we practice sparring. We always have to pair up with someone close to our height and because we are not black belts, we do rhythm sparring which means we count (1, 2, 3) as we attack. Our partner attacks us three times and then we attack three times back. We had to purchase our equipment from the school. We paid for a whole bag filled with foot pads, helmet of padding, hand pads, mouthguard, and shin guards (which we don't use). In September, my teacher announced that we were required to have protection for our ribs due to some new laws or sparring or something. They had us purchase a huge rib guard costing $60 (i think it's kinda reasonable). During the holidays and summertime, they offer to sell small gifts and we order if we want them. Also they have classes call "Master's Club" which are short classes that are optional held for a few minutes after a regular class is done. In order to participate in that we must order a red uniform to wear besides our white ones and some weapons like nunchucks.
If any of you could determine if these ppl are bad or not that would be amazing.
It is sad bet likely that you are in a McDojang/McDojo. It has all the signs of being one. You might want to read what i pasted below. Take the time to read it all. You will not find it written anywhere else.
Best of luck!
Over the years I've watched one fad martial art after the other pop up. Here is a short history of what has happen to the martial arts since I started.
In the 1960's you almost never saw and children studying martial arts. It was a rough adult activity. Less than 3% of students ever made it to black belt due to the tough requirements and full contact sparring in many dojo. The average time to reach black belt was 3-5 years. Many time longer. There were no contracts for the most part and no children that were black belts.
Then these things happened and continue to:
1) the martial arts became instantly more popular due to the martial arts movie boom in the late 1960 and early to mid 1970's.
2) the movie boom caused the public to seek martial arts schools.
3) Many martial arts schools popped up. However many were operated by con artist who knew that the public did not know real martial art from fake.
4) plane loads of Koreans came to the U.S. to open martial arts schools. This was because they saw an opportunity to make money. Again the public was lied to in many cases. Many of the so called masters that are now famous here were low ranks in Korea. The term Airplane Promotion was used often to describe the fact that many Koreans left Korea as low ranked black belt only to get off the plane as high ranked masters.
5) Many martial arts schools realized the it was very hard to keep the schools from going broke. To combat this they used the business model used by health clubs. This meant that they began to require contracts.
6) The contracts began to evolve into the black belt contracts seen often today.
7) Martial arts schools began to lower the minimum age for students to join.
8) Requirements were lowered because many people would drop out.
9) As the requirements for age and testing were required more belts were added to allow schools to promote more often.
10) More belts and more promotions allowed the schools to charge more for testing.
11) Some schools began to have mandatory seminars between testing, which they could charge for.
12) Black belt clubs became popular as another marketing method, as did leadership clubs, and competition teams.
13) Martial arts schools began to start allowing all kinds of uniforms and colors to sell more items.
These are just some of the problems. Less and less real self-defense is being taught. Now schools push the idea of having your child become a black belt. Such other things as fitness, weight loss, and flexibility have become more important than learning real self-defense.
In the 1990's about 80% of the martial arts students in the U.S.A. were children. Children black belts are common. It is not reason that the martial arts are viewed as a Children's activity. The martial arts were originally a deadly method of self-defense to be used only if your life is threatened. Today it is largely a joke. What is really sad is that there have been generation after generation of new black belts for so many years. Each generation being taught less and less of the real art. Now only the old timers like myself can clearly see the difference between what it once was and what it has become.
I realize that many reading this will not agree. Some will get downright mad. My purpose here is to tell it as I and many other long time martial artists have witnessed it. The good news is that there are a small number of martial artists that still practice and teach the old ways. We do not need to study multiple styles to try to create something more effective as is the practice today for many. We have complete fighting arts that have worked for hundreds of years. The ignorance, arrogance, and disrespect we see all around us is hard to deal with. But Many of us continue to do what we know is correct training. Our goal is to educate as many student as we can. that is the only thing keeping the martial arts from turning into either a children's activity or a collection of techniques collected by those that imagine themselves smarter than those who are more experienced.

Canadian history about the Woodland Cree Tribe - did they have clans? I'm trying to finish up my history homework and I've hit the books and the internet but I can't find one particular answer... did the Woodland Cree have clans within the tribe? I know they had many bands, does that count? Or who were leaders of the clan?
I'm a little confused. Please offer facts and opinions! (Just tell me which one it is.)
I believe that I can help you, albeit indirectly:
http://www.giftoflanguageandculture.ca/index.html
Go to the above web site and contact the Cree staff directly. The information that you are requesting is so specific as not to be readily found on the Internet. So go to the source, Cree staff who have made this kind of information their life's work.
I would have sent them an email myself but time is growing short for an answer to your question.
Good luck in your homework assignment.
French speakers/natives only? The shopping facilites near my area is superb because it offers many shopping opportunities in Wilshere. The fact that it is near my house is another advantage because this creates less hassle for me. Often shops will have a discount day which ensures customers can buy what they require at an affordable price which saves money for them.
I'm changing the wording slightly but still conveying the same idea.
To the first person who answered you: the English is fine aside from a couple minor errors: "Wilshire" was misspelled (a typo, undoubtedly), and he should have used "are" with "facilities" since the latter is in the plural form. To suggest that the English is difficult to understand based on that is frankly untrue.

No they didn't have a clan system.
But there are Oji-Cree (Ojibwa-Cree) and they many follow a clan system.

How do I find a Canadian job sponsor? I have looked into all the details about emigrating to Canada. I know that in order to get a work visa I must first have a job offer/sponsor. I've been sending out my resume, but it seems like not too many places are willing to take me without a work visa. It's a catch 22. I don't have $1100 for permanent resident visa fees. And I certainly don't have $10,000 in savings to prove I can care for myself once there. My partner lives and works in Ottawa now, but we are not married, nor have we been together for 1 year yet...so I can't apply under conjugal partner sponsorship. It's easy for her because she is Plains Cree and has natural dual citizenship. I don't have family there. Ottawa, Ontario doesn't qualify as a provincial sponsor. I don't know what to do. Can anyone advise me where to send in my resume? Does anyone know of a loophole in the system? Is there someone out there willing to give me a job offer/sponsorship? I'm running low on options at this point and it's depressing Canada is very choosy when it comes to immigrants. They don't want the unemployed, uneducated and no skills kind of person. They already have enough of those. The best way you can immigrate to Canada is if you are a doctor or lawyer.
