How can I learn this language.......? I want to learn oji-cree language. I live on pembina hwy and the BHF center in near the skating rink and I was wondering if I could learn oji-cree there or it I could learn it somewhere else. You should call up the center and see if they have language classes. Or google for other places that might have it near where you live.

What languages do you speak and what is your native language? My Native language is English, I speak 3 languages, English, German and Cree. But I only know a bit in Cree, and I know a lot in German. My native language is in Mandarin Chines, but I speak and write fluently in English. I understand and speak a little in Taiwanese dialect (In fact, Taiwanese is actually the Min Nan dialect from Fujian Province), and understand and speak a little in Cantonese. I understand a little of my mother's native dialect Hakka, but I cannot speak. I don't understand any bit of my dad's native Fuzhou dialect. However, I grow up only speak Mandarin, then later learned English when I moved to US. I don't understand Japanese or Korean, but if I see Chinese characters in their languages, I'll try to make some sense out of it.

Would it be unusual as a white person to learn a native american/aboriginal language? I want to learn the Cree language. Cree is the most spoken aboriginal language both in numbers and is widespread across the country. About 200,000 people know the language. I want to learn Cree because in my field of work, knowing a lot of languages is very beneficial. This isn't an obscure language...it may be only #8 in terms of numbers but it's the second most widespread language after English across the country. Chinese, Italian, and Punjabi are only located in major cities like Vancouver or Toronto. No it's not unusual for a white person to learn a native American/aboriginal language.
Yes, Cree is widespread across the country and spoken by some 200,000 people.
But what you fail to realize is that the population that speak Cree stretch some 3,000 miles across the country. The Cree people have been separated through time and distance and their language is composed of many dialects and many of those dialects are not mutually intelligible.

A second issue is . . . . in some provinces the Cree reside in the far north, and if you live/work in the south you may never be around any significant number of Cree speakers.

Another language with a wide distribution is Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe). This is a map of where the Anishinaabe population reside, both in rural and urban areas. It's an aboriginal language with the greatest resorces on the Internet. The Anishinaabe population is in closer proximity to mainstream society then the Cree, as a result Anishinaabemowin is losing ground as a spoken language.

Like Cree, Anishinaabemowin has many dialects. Although Anishinaabemowin has the greatest number of resources on the Internet, The resources are specific to a particular dialect so to use them you need to know which dialect you are learning.

Does anyone know of a place that offers either Inuktitut or Cree language lessons in Ottawa? I want to learn one or both of those languages. I know UofO and Carleton both on occasion offer courses in those languages, but they aren't offering them at the moment. I'm looking to take lessons preferably starting in January and ending no later then the end of April. Meegwetch! (Thanks) No. Sorry I can't help but I think it's wonderful you've decided to learn languages like Inuktitut or Cree (to any degree). I fell in love with Inuktitut about a year ago. I can't speak a word of it, but learned to read, and studied the grammar for a while. Very interesting language, and it sounds very unique. in the 'native cree' language, what does "Tansi" mean? Its like saying "how is it going" like how are you.. You hear aboriginal people saying it as hi or how are you.

I need to know any surnames for the Plains Cree of the Algonquian language? The Plains Cree is one of the four main dialects of the Algonquian language, and i have looked and looked and i cannot find and surnames that might be of the Plains Cree descent. I know that they may not have traditional last names like other tribes i've heard of that use things like: white feather, etc. But i just need to know any surnames that any ancestors of the Plains Cree language might have.
