Which type of LED flashlight is better? Shaking, Crank, Wind-Up, or Traditional battery ones? I just tried to turn on my traditional flashlight and it doesn't work. I know it must be that the battery died. It's the big batteries and those are expensive. So, I'm looking to get a new flashlight, an LED one. My friend has those Wind-up ones where you can pull out a lever and just turn for like a minute and it'll work for 30 minutes. My other friend has those Crank ones where there's a piece that budges out on the side and you just press it a couple of times. Then when I looked on google, there are shaking ones. I'd like to know from your experience which one works the best, and most efficient. I looked on eBay and there are all about $6 a piece, and well, if I have to buy new batteries for a similar price, might as well get a new one. Thanks in advance for your input! I have never had good luck with the kind you shake. They work for a bit and then stop. I prefer the wind-up kind. They're much more reliable.
I mostly use the battery kind, but the wind-up ones are great. You just store them and they're there when you need them. No worry about batteries going dead or leaking.

is this possible- splitting one current into two so i can run other things? ok, i have taken a hand crank generator from an old flashlight and have it hooked up to charge a capacitor that runs an led flashlight (one of those freedom flashlights that you can shake up to charge).and although it works fine as a charger, i was wondering if there is a way that i could run the capacitor to split it's current from one single positive/negative current into 2. i want to be able to use the capacitor to run something that has 2 battery slots. kind of like an extension cord that has one plug in but gives you two outlets to run things. is there a device that allows me to do this? if so, any ideas for where i might find/order one? It's called a "parallel connection". just wire them together.
You can connect any number of things across a battery (or a charged capacitor) and the battery will power them all.
But
They all have to operate at the same voltage that the battery (or charged capacitor) generates.
The total current has to be within the capacity of the battery (or charged capacitor)
The battery (or charged capacitor) will not last as long

How does a hand crank generate electiricity? It seems like flashlights that are powered by cranks take some effort to turn and don't generate enough power to illuminate anything but lame LED lights. Is there a formula to determine the tension vs. power generation in a crank. Or is electrical output determined by revolutions... So tension is created with a big gear spinning a small gear? I'd like to know how the power becomes electricity. There is power & force everywhere, but turning a pulley doesn't spontaneously create electricity... What reaction takes place that generates an arch or charge of electricity. The typical generator works because a conductor has been passed through a magnetic field.
The generator is made up of a lot of conductive wires being passed through the magnetic field.
The more power being generated, the harder it is to turn the generator. Regardless of the efficiency of the drive mechanism you can't generate power without inputing the work.
That power out-put form the generator IS NOT FREE.It takes energy and since it is not 100% efficient, the power in is greater than the power out..
Easy proof.
If you have a portable auxiliary generator handy, find a large load to apply to it. (Possibly a high powered drill).
Have the engine powered generator operating at a constant speed, then start the electric motor of the drill.
Notice how the generator responds.
The engine driving the generator suddenly has to work very hard to carry the additional load and you are sucking more gasoline into the engine to keep the generator turning.
If that weren't true, the power companies wouldn't have to charge you more for the extra power you use, and they wouldn't need to build more generating capacity.

Hand Crank Power Supply (plug in socket)? Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew of a hand crank generator of some kind, which you would be able to plug a regular power cord in for a laptop, cellphone, or any other electric device? I have seen a few LED flashlight/cellphone combo charging devices, but I am not sure if that is what i am looking for. Well, if anyone knows, an response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! While you could charge a cell phone with a hand generator I don't think you could charge a laptop with one. But the link below has a hand operated cell phone charger and promises a foot operated charger for laptops at some time. Maybe this site will help at bit.

- no need for a rifle, shotgun, and handgun; if your need a gun to hunt, it just pick a rifle or shotgun, depending what you plan on hunting in the area you will be in
- no need for three knives/multitools; a single multitool is fine for 99% of needs, the handsaw will take care of the rest
- no need for a life jacket, just stay away from any large bodies of water
- no need for trip wire...you wont be in Vietnam
- no need for a cooler; nothing will be cold enough to keep cool in the first place, and a cooler wont keep things cool for more than a day at most
- map and compass should be essentials
- I would add snowshoes if you plan on being in the mountains
- Add high strength duct tape and replace the shoe glue & superglue with Seam Grip, as it will cover mulitple needs and is better at sealing waterproof items
- dont forget fuel
There really isn't any point in putting together a general survival kit, unless you plan on getting lost without warning in the mountains. You really need to shape your gear around each trip depending on location and season. Plus, this is going to weigh probably upwards of 100 lbs, so won't be reasonable to carry around as an emergency measure. The fact is, you really can't count on any survival situation as being long term. To survive in the mountains in an emergency, you should focus on getting found or getting out ASAP.
EDIT: Judging by a couple of the answers below, I see some of us live in a fantasy world of paranoia and delusion. Don't worry, I promise zombies and the evil government won't be taking over the Earth and running us into the mountains any time soon.
@Bear Crap: None of those recent disasters you listed required long term survival in the mountains. I'm sure having 100 lbs of mountain survival gear would have helped those people in Pearl Harbor and during 9/11. The only one that required survival was MAYBE Katrina, for those that were too dumb to leave in the first place. All you needed to survive that was stocked food, water, and a pump. Stop living in a fantasy land where doomsday is lurking around the bend and only those with stockpiled "survival" gear will live. If you are really concerned, you should just build a well-stocked bunker, which would be far more useful than a duffel bag of toys from the Army surplus store. I think you "survival" nuts just like to play pretend! Of course there is a 1 in a billion chance a meteorite could knock out most life on Earth, but if that happens, you will end up dying anyway, and your survival skills will be irrelevant on the drastically changed planet. Like I said, I think you guys just like to gather a bunch of little "survival" toys like big useless knives, paracord, whistles, and other junk and play pretend...in fact you probably hope society breaks down because it would be "cool" to have to "survive" LMAO!

hand crank flashlight to bike generator? can i take apart one of those hand crank LED flashlights and take out the part that is being cranked to produce the light. and some how put it on my bike wheel and when i pedal the bike it spins and recharges a 12v marine battery? any suggestions??? thanks im not using the battery to power the bike. im using the battery for my boat Max output capacity of those generators is only a few dozen milliamps, if that - if your battery is about the same size as a typical car battery, then it's capacity would be about 100 amp-hours. Therefore it would take dozens to hundreds of hours to recharge it.
An automotive alternator and regulator is much more appropriate. About the right gear ratio for the alternator pully might be the diameter of a 10-speed's rear tire to the diameter of the alternator's pulley, so a belt large enough to fit both plus an idler pulley to keep it tight on the alternator pulley might get you there, and the gears of the bike can fine-tune it to your physical capacity. One way to calculate how much you'll have to pedal -
1) Assume your leg's max pedal output for an extended time to be say 1/5 horsepower if you're in pretty good shape, maybe 1/3 if you're Lance Armstrong
2) Assume bike/alternator/regulator/battery chemistry net efficiency to be about 50% (sorry, that's about the best considering total losses)
3) Assume battery depletion to be 75%, leaving it only 25% charged (this is as far as you should go even with a deep-cycle marine battery)
4) Then minimum required energy in watts into the battery would be the amp-hour rating of the battery times the 75% percent figure times 3600 (seconds per hour) times charging voltage of 13.5V divided by the efficiency losses of 50%
Ex - 100 amp-hour battery * 75% * 3600 / 0.5 = 540000 watt-seconds, aka joules
Divide that by the constant 745 to get horsepower-seconds, which would be 725. If you're going to kick at 1/5hp, then the time you'll need to pedal your azz off would be
725/(1/5) = 725 * 5 = 3625 seconds, or slightly more than 1 hour.
...I think I got that all right....
...or, you could just jumper the battery to your car's battery while the engine is idling for about 20 minutes....

What do you have in yours? Were do you keep it? I suppose you have included enough toilet paper? Back up battery or another mobile phone is handy. It is recommended now that you have at least 2 weeks food and water supply. Perhaps a hand shovel. I keep some stuff for car emergencies, in case I can't get home. And the rest in a cupboard by the front door.

Will a crank charging flashlight still work after an EMP or nuclear strike? I have this little LED flashlight/ radio combo gadget that you recharge by turning a crank on it. If you are really worried about such things, all you have to do is seal the radio inside of aluminum foil. Make it air-tight, or wrap it with a double layer of foil, overlapping any foil joints.

Please help! can i charge a battery with a hand cranck flashlight? i have a 14 v laptop battery and a hand crank flashlight that has an outport and a wire, can i charge it with that? it doesnt destroy a 3v led Doubtful you'll need at least 15 volts to actually charge a 14v battery you need to test the cranklights output but I doubt it is anywhere near 15 volts. Also the cranklight probably only puts out mA but the laptop battery need and amp or two of current to charge in a few hours mA would take days of solid cranking if the voltage was high enough.
