How do I become a better commuter? I ride my bike everywhere and a few months ago, I got tired of being restrained to the sidewalk like a little kid. I set out to learn how to commute properly and, while I feel a little bit more comfortable in light traffic, I still need a lot of help. I recently saw a bike that had something like a "bicycle plate" and a sticker that claimed the owner had a bike license. How can I find that program? Would I benefit from it? I'm near Purdue, in West Lafayette, IN. Thanks.
Well a stick won't make you a better commuter. Or maybe I don't understand your question?
By developing you bike handling skills, learning defensive riding and following traffic laws. You'll be predictable to drivers and safe.
Is it necessary to wear a bike helmet when commuting to work? In addition, I only ever ride my bicycle on the pavement/side walk shared by pedestrians; the only time I go on the road is when cross the lights for pedestrians.
Is it really necessary for commuters to wear a bike helmet. I just find it unnecessary to wear helmets on the street because the chances of collision and injury are a lot less than on the road, and I question the compulsory bike helmet laws.
If wearing helmets is mandatory, why don't we make the inclusion of airbags mandatory for all cars as well then?
Even when I ride on the sidewalk, which is illegal where I live, I have close calls when people are backing out of driveways and such. Not to mention the people that are getting out of their house I almost hit.

"The Crosswalk Slam
You're riding on the sidewalk and cross the street at a crosswalk, and a car makes a right turn, right into you. Cars aren't expecting bikes in the crosswalk, so you have to be very careful to avoid this one. This collision is so common we've lost track of the number of people who've told us they were hit this way, such as Ray John Ray. One study showed that sidewalk-riding was twice as dangerous as road riding, and another study said it's even more dangerous than that.
How to avoid this collision:
1. Get a headlight. If you're riding at night, you should absolutely use a front headlight. It's required by law, anyway.
2. Slow down. Slow down enough that you're able to completely stop if necessary.
3. Don't ride on the sidewalk in the first place. Crossing between sidewalks can be a fairly dangerous maneuver. If you do it on the left-hand side of the street, you risk getting slammed as per the diagram. If you do it on the right-hand side of the street, you risk getting slammed by a car behind you that's turning right. You also risk getting hit by cars pulling out of parking lots or driveways. These kinds of accidents are hard to avoid, which is a compelling reason to not ride on the sidewalk in the first place.
And another reason not to ride on the sidewalk is that you're threatening to pedestrians. Your bike is as threatening to a pedestrian as a car is threatening to you. Finally, riding on the sidewalk is illegal in some places. (In Austin, those places are the Drag, and downtown on 6th St. and on Congress). If you do plan on riding on sidewalks, do it slowly and EXTRA carefully, ESPECIALLY when crossing the street between two sidewalks."
"1. Don't ride on the sidewalk. When you come off the sidewalk to cross the street you're invisible to motorists. You're just begging to be hit if you do this. Keith Vick was killed this way in Austin, TX in Dec. 2002."
~~~~~
"Contrary to popular belief, you increase your chances of getting hit by car when riding your bike on the sidewalk. I know you may find it hard to believe but its true.
While riding in the street is more intimidating, it places you in a position that makes you more visible to the motorist. Usually people will ride on the sidewalk because they want to stay away from cars or they ride against traffic in the street because they are afraid of being hit from behind: they "want to see the cars coming at me". Crashes on sidewalks comprise close to fifty percent of all crash types. They are more common because every driveway forms an intersection and, if you went to driving school you may remember, that most crashes happen at intersections. In traffic engineering jargon where two vehicles cross paths is referred to as a conflict point and traffic engineers work very hard at reducing or eliminating conflict points.
Essentially every driveway that crosses the sidewalk forms a conflict point. Couple this with motorists not stopping at the sidewalk before entering the street and looking at traffic in the street not for bicyclists on the sidewalk and you have recipe for a crash. By cycling in the street you completely avoid these conflict points. The motorist stops before entering the street and is looking where you will be before they cross your path. While these crashes are usually not fatal, they can easily result in an incapacitating injury especially if you are not wearing a helmet. In my expert witness practice, the majority of sidewalk related crashes I've been involved with the rider was not wearing a helmet and usually result in brain injury"- http://ezinearticles.com/?Bicycle-Safety---The-Problems-With-Sidewalk-Riding-and-Against-the-Flow-of-Traffic&id=1857311
What tires 700 x 35 for my commuter bike ? Me about 90 kg , rear paniers and light maybe 5 to 7 kg load , mostly flat 40 km everyday and any weather riding , 90 % riding on fast aspalt in bicycle line . Bike is older, restored and slightly modified treking model Koga Miata , 27 spead and I run 52 - 11 gear on it . I think Shwalbe Marathon or Panaracer Pasela . There is more option from Continental , Michelin and so on . Which tire will perform better ? Any idea ? My favourite is Schwalbe with the reflective side wall. If you get the Kevlar ones you will go longer between punctures. I have found Michelin Worldtours a very good too.
What is a comfortable seat for a mens commuter bicycle? I plan on purchasing the Marin Kentfield, I took it for a test ride just yesterday and really enjoyed the light ride that it provides.
Whats more, I would purchased it had they been able to offer me the sale price in advance, unfortunately they told me I could purchase it now and get in store credit later.
As tempting as this may sound I didn't want to purchase anything without knowing that I'd spend that much in accessories.
ANYWAY, The bike was a real nice comfortable ride, except that I feel I most likely am going to have to replace the seat.
Anybody have a suggestion as to what I should look to purchase? or suggestions about features I should look for?
Or is this one of those feel and see situations?
Thanks in advance.
There is only one kind of seat to buy. Everyone else is wrong!
A hard leather seat, narrow, no springs is the MOST comfortable seat you can get!
Sound ridiculous? It's not.
Hard leather feels awful for the first two or three weeks of constant riding but once you break it in you WILL NEVER ride anything else. Why do you think top end used cycles always get sold without the seat (or the pedals, but that's another story)?
A normal. plastic (or whatever) shell with padding will always have hot spots--places where your bones press down at a point. Padded shell seats cannot prevent this completely. A leather seat eventually molds itself to the uneven contours of your backside and acts like a hammock supporting your butt evenly across the entire length of the seat. No hot spots.
Narrow is better to prevent chafing. The difference in support between a fat seat and a narrow one is insignificant. Chafing, on the other hand occurs if the seat is even slightly too large. A blister down there is............slightly unpleasant.
Springs do nothing but add weight. The first significant bump and they ALL bottom out, which is the same as no springs. HARD leather rebounds naturally (it has to be hard to support all your body weight) and cannot, by definition, bottom out (ouch! no pun intended there).
This is all predicated on wanting to ride. If you only ride 5 miles each, three times a summer, then get a Spenco gel cover for your normal seat.
If you ride up to or more than three weeks total, an hour each time per season then it is worth it to get a real leather seat.
So, they take a long time to break in and they are insanely expensive: you can easily spend $200 on a Leper, or an Ideale or a Brooks. Is it any wonder they aren't exactly popular? But the good news is that with the least amount of care they last forever. And if you look carefully you can pull a really sweet Brooks saddle off a thirty year old, $100 Raleigh from a yard sale.
I guarantee if you get one, new or used, and break it in right and take care of it, you will move it from bike to bike until the day you stop riding.
Can I sue my town and the railroad even though I was intoxicated while riding my bicycle at night? I have ridden this route too many times to count over the years with not a problem. Recently work was done on the railroad crossing in my town, Several patches of cement were removed here and there from between the tracks where pedestrians and bicyclists would normally cross over smooth sailing. Returning from the local convenience store one night I went to ride across the tracks as usual to head back home and woot woot! Right into the gaping hole me and a boys bike went! I got up and walked the bike home. Been in ER 4 times, hospitalized twice for several days with severe hematoma to vah-jj, emergency surgical drainage for engorgement extreme pain suffering like unimaginable. I am deformed and in agony because at the crossing after the changes, no street lights were present, no warning blinking orange lights, no caution tape or safety cones, it was pitch black aside from distant store lights and occasional light traffic. I want to pursue a case against the town and/or the railroad for negligence. Lucky thing I didn't hit my head, pass out and get run over by the commuter rail or a cargo train. went to Er 1st time after walking home, it's been 3 weeks of torture. Here's the thing...I was questioned about how much I had to drink that night. No Breathalyzer, pee test or urine tests were taken to prove anything.
Please, no drunk bashing, I had five beers between 3 and 8, and nothing till about 10:30/11:00 when I was back home. Hell yeah who wouldn't need a hefty shot after that! While the ambulance was on its way I had time for two good ones cuz I wazza hurtan big time. So yeah they smelled liquor on me but truth is i didn't drink any liquor till after wards when I was home in my kitchen on the phone. No one can say I was sloppy, incoherent, abusive or rude.
Do I have a case? I say yes please forward your opinions.
If there were patches of concrete taken out and a hole left behind, there should absolutely have been caution tape, cones, a sign, or something to warn people about the danger posed. In that regard, you might have a case.
As far as you being intoxicated, you said you were, and then you said you weren't. Which is it? If you were, you would get less of a settlement because you had a hand in your own injury since being drunk might have stopped you from seeing the danger ahead.
If you weren't drunk, you'd have a decent legal argument, given what you wrote.
But if you want a real answer to your question of whether or not you have a legal case, you really should speak with a lawyer. I believe you would have a case, but mine is at best an educated guess.
REPOST: Can I sue my town and the railroad even though I was intoxicated while riding my bicycle at night? I am re-posting this because well, I am new here and was surprised to see 3 responses so quickly after my initial post AND because my second responder had an interesting point I thought I would clarify....I have titled my question ".....while being intoxicated" BECAUSE it is my belief that THAT is what I will be ACCUSED of and not necessarily what really was.... Thanks for any interest in my question, read on........ I have ridden this route too many times to count over the years with not a problem. Recently work was done on the railroad crossing in my town, Several patches of cement were removed here and there from between the tracks where pedestrians and bicyclists would normally cross over smooth sailing. Returning from the local convenience store one night I went to ride across the tracks as usual to head back home and woot woot! Right into the gaping hole me and a boys bike went! I got up and walked the bike home. Been in ER 4 times, hospitalized twice for several days with severe hematoma to vah-jj, emergency surgical drainage for engorgement extreme pain suffering like unimaginable. I am deformed and in agony because at the crossing after the changes, no street lights were present, no warning blinking orange lights, no caution tape or safety cones, it was pitch black aside from distant store lights and occasional light traffic. I want to pursue a case against the town and/or the railroad for negligence. Lucky thing I didn't hit my head, pass out and get run over by the commuter rail or a cargo train. went to Er 1st time after walking home, it's been 3 weeks of torture. Here's the thing...I was questioned about how much I had to drink that night. No Breathalyzer, pee test or urine tests were taken to prove anything. Please, no drunk bashing, I had five beers between 3 and 8, and nothing till about 10:30/11:00 when I was back home. Hell yeah who wouldn't need a hefty shot after that! While the ambulance was on its way I had time for two good ones cuz I wazza hurtan big time. So yeah they smelled liquor on me but truth is i didn't drink any liquor till after wards when I was home in my kitchen on the phone. No one can say I was sloppy, incoherent, abusive or rude. Do I have a case? I say yes please forward your opinions.
Will a dynamo in the front bicycle wheel hub interfere with wireless bike computer? I bought a new commuter bike, comes with dynamo-powered lights in front and rear, dynamo located in front hub, a wire running up inside the right hand fork. I have suspicions that this will cause interference with a wireless bike computer's sensor as the hub will contain strong magnets and the electric current running in the wire within the fork will also generate a magnetic field, all in the close proximity of the sensor. Just curious if anyone has had an experience with respect to this? I will likely return the bike computer anyway because of the ridiculous (for my bike) distance needed between sensor and magnet (5 mm).
It has been noted that hub dynamo lighting systems can interfere with wireless computer systems. I use wired computers with my hub dynamo systems. Even the ones with rear hub dyno systems.
Why is 5mm a ridiculous distance? Is this space too large or too small? There are solutions to both of these problems.
what makes for touring or commuter bikes? I'm looking for a commuter type bicycle on the higher end ($700+) and want to know what makes to look at. Of course there are a lot of high end road bike makers but I need something suitable for fenders, plain clothes, a bag, lights and even a trailer sometimes.
I'm looking at Trek, Raleigh, Cannondale, Bianchi. I don't know what else to look at because so many seem to be focused on road racing or mountain bikes. Am I missing something?
Most if not all of the manufactures have a commuter bike in their line up. You can put fenders and racks on a hybrid or even a touring bike. For long rides drop bars can make a huge difference.
Why do motorist hate cyclist and why are some cyclist so G*d D@mned arrogant? I ride a bike as a commuter and it is not uncommon for motorist to throw things at me and edge me off the road (even the bike path [if you can call a white line and a foot to two feet of asphalt a bike lane])
On the flip side there are the spandex people who seem to think that traffic signals do not apply to them. I would understand it if they came to a stop and waited awhile then went through a red light (with very few exceptions lights do not change for cyclist) but they seem to act as if the light or stop sign does not apply to them.
It is a small planet 7925 miles in diameter at the equator. less than 200 million sq.mi. TOTAL surface area INCLUDING the oceans. Less than 55 million sq. mi. 'dry' land including the Sahara and Antartica.
If I can travel over 7000 miles in a little over 2 months by bike (that is coast to coast and back in America) that shows how small the planet is and how much distance can be covered on a bike.
Bicycling is good for you and good for the planet
I'm glad to see people riding bikes instead of wasting fuel. It's the people who rant and rave about how bikes should get all the same consideration that cars do and then don't follow traffic laws that piss me off. If you are going to insist on getting any respect from motorists, follow the freakin' traffic laws. If they don't then I just treat them like a dumb kid on a bike and try not to run them over.
Too many times.
