Does the 4 inch barrel of the Colt Python give good accuracy and distance? That is for shooting Magnum .357 cartridges? Or does it require a longer barrel; like a 6 inch or even an 8 inch (which looks too long)? BTW, what's the effective range of a 4 inch Colt Python; effective enough to give a "stopping effect"? What's the effective range of a 6 inch and an 8 inch?? Please explain... The myth that a longer barrel is more accurate is just that, a myth. The only advantage of a longer barrel is that with open sights it gives you a longer sighting radius and that makes it easier to hold on target.
The the effective range of a 4 inch barrel shooting the .357 Mag. is further than most people can hold it on target. It doesn't matter how much "stopping effect" your firearm has if you can't hit where you are shooting.

Why is my colt python discharging scraps of metal or sparks from the space above the barrel? I noticed our 6" colt python was doing this when I stood behind and to the left a yard from my dad... I was hit a few times by some of this discharge.. is this normal? The gun itself has only been taken to the range a few times in the past 30 years... note: we WERE using some bullets that could've been around 20 years or so... Bubba, some others have already noted that some escaping gas is normal. However if you are finding metal shavings then you need to have the pistol inspected. What can happen is the timing can be off so that when you pull the trigger the cylinder rotates and it is fired as it is aligned with the barrel; [f it's off the lead or the copper jacket can scrape the edge of the barrel. Here's a couple of things to check on the Python, with the pistol empty close the cylinder and try to rotate it. If it slips past the locked position it needs a gunsmith. Second open the cylinder and look at the end of the barrel. If you find lead or brass color on the edge it needs a gunsmith. There are several other checks to do but not knowing you or your dads level of gun knowledge I'd have it checked out. If it rotates enough that that the edge of the primer is hit by the firing pin while it's being fired; the results won't be a good thing

How much would a perfect, unfired, 8" Colt Python be worth? I bought it a while ago and its just been greased and kept in storage, how much would it be worth now? Would it ever increase in value? I also have a minimally fired and well oiled/maintained Colt Anaconda, same questions. Assuming it is a "standard" Python, it looks like the top price is about $1000. Just a year ago you might have held out for twice that much, and some models are still command prices in the $2000 range. The 6" barrel has always been the most desirable, and that will mean a smaller market for your revolver. I'm guessing that you can get up to $750 for the Anaconda, but that probably won't be a quick sale. Barrel length and caliber may have some effect with 45 Colt being less desirable than 44 Remington Magnum.Just like the Python, the Anaconda was worth more last year. Values in your particular area may be higher or lower.
No one can guarantee the future value of any firearm, but the Python is such a highly regarded design it will probably rebound in a few years. The Anaconda is a fine revolver, but I suspect the value will not rebound, rather increase or decrease at about the same rate as comparable S&W and Ruger models.

Can Pistols be made to have a caliber of a .357magnum Colt Python? I know the Handgun (Revolver) Colt Python has a huger .357magnum Caliber and the same company is doing Pistols almost no damege compred to the huge damage coursed by one shot from a Colt Python with standerd rounds, why cant they combine the benifits of a Pistol with the pershot damage power of the .357magnum Colt Python? Are they not intrestrested in perfection? or they like to mess with us? and if not why is it? why mess with something that's already done. Simply put, it's a question of how many rounds you need. 'With that kind of stopping power you don't need that many rounds. And to make an automatic that will take that kind of beating is difficult. It can be done. Where can I get a full metal Colt Python Airsoft gun? Ive been searching forever for a full metal colt python air soft gun. Every one that I find is made of mostly ABS and just the trigger and hammer are made of metal. Im looking for one completely metal (preferably black), with exception of the grip. I don't care what the cost is. If somone could please help me out it would be GREATLY appreciated. If u kept my colt python for lets say five more years how much do you think it would appreciate? My colt python 357 magnum six inch stainless steal vent ribbed double action wooden grips is in meant condition exept a small chip in left grip. It has only been fired six times. Hard to tell, but I can tell you this... In the Sixties I bought my first Python for a small fortune: $150. My next Python I got at a steal in the Eighties for: $416. Both of these were 4" Royal Blue wooden grips. Then I bought my first stainless steel Python, a Satin finish w/4" barrel with original Colt black neoprene grips about two years ago for $900. Last year I paid nearly $1,200. for a 'like new never fired' Colt Python Royal Blue original wood grips 6" barrel. This year I saw for sale a 'like new' Colt Python Satin Stainless steel 6" barrel black Colt neoprene grips for: $1,500. I had to pass on this beauty!
So it appears that they're doing nothing but going up in value as they are no longer made. However, consider that the buying power of the dollar is also declining. For example, in the late Twenties and early Thirties you could buy a fine gentleman's suit for twenty US dollars in gold (a $20.00 US Double Eagle gold coin). You still can buy a fine gentleman's suit for twenty dollars provided that you pay for it with the same Double Eagle gold coin. So you see, the dollar only represents value. Gold IS value.
If I were you I'd just keep that Python. I still regret having parted with my first two Pythons and I'm kicking myself for not buying that last one!

ADDENDUM: My first two Pythons were brand new. The last two were (of course) used, but in like-new conditions. There are stainless steel Pythons that are NOT the later Elite models and the less common ones are the Satin Stainless Steel. These are NOT 'Elite' Pythons but earlier models. Shiny stainless is hard to tell from factory nickel finish but any Python that has not been damaged, worn out, or re-finished is apt to appreciate in value. This also applies to the newer 'Elite' model. The rarest Pythons are the 3" barrel, 5" barrel and 8" target model Pythons chambered in .38 Special only, rather than .357 Magnum/.38 Special. If I ever 'win the lotto' I'll probably become a big Colt Python collector!

The gun has been discontinued for around a decade. You can try for private sales. Uh, backpage.com is a good place, so is your newspaper classifieds. But when it comes to such dealing you need to know your state firearm laws. I know them but I would need specifics. You do need to be at least 18 to buy and own a handgun and you'd need to be 21 to get one through an FFL holder. Plus they are expensive. $1,000 and up used. You won't find them new.

You are chasing windmills. The REAL value is what someone is willing to pay for it. You can get an idea from the Blue Book of Gun Values, which also explains the NRA 98%, 50%, and so on condition ratings. For the right buyer, you could be looking at a grand or so. Do you have the original box? It matters to collectors. Don't jump on the first offer you get. They are not being produced anymore, so supply and demand kicks in. The supply is obviously a fixed number, and demand will drive the price.
