Who makes the best 1911 .45ACP pistol (e.g. Colt, Springfield, Kimber, etc.)? I'm just wondering who makes the best 1911 pistol for the money? How are the Para-Ordance 1911's? What about the Springfield GI addition of the 1911A1? I've seen both of these priced between $500-600. Are they as good as the 1911's in the $1000 price range (e.g. Kimber, Colt)? I am actually considering a Para Ordance model. I like the parkerized finish over the stainless steal, it looks more military. For my money, I prefer Colt. Down through the years I have owned at least 6 and have yet to have a problem. I have two right now, a Colt Gold Cup Trophy and a model 1911 series 80 with a full Combat Custom job..
My choice is based on reliability, accuracy and feel a Colt just feels right in my hand. The only other 45 that I would seriously consider would be a Wilson Combat 45, they have a couple of models that I like...
I carry for personal defense. Your reason to own a 45 may differ. Looks may be important to you, but I would think feel should be your greater concern, along with reliability if you intend to carry..
I would suggest, if you have not. Go to a large gun show and handle any handguns you are interested in. See how they feel, check out the sights make sure you like them..
To answer one of your main Q, is a $500-600 pistol as good as a $1,000 one. The answer to that is obvious, no, you pay for what you get.. The exceptions would be a collectable, or a brand new model that is still scarce etc!...
You ask some good questions, continue to do the same and you will not make a mistake "the first time"..

Who makes a better 1911 pistol - Colt or Kimber? In the price range of around $1000 (I can't afford the fancy Les Baers or Wilson Combats), would you rather buy a Kimber or Colt 1911 style pistol? I'm only considering the full size 5" barrel versions. Thanks for your thoughts. Kimber makes much nicer 1911's than Colt in the $1000. price range.
Kimber's are far better finished, better fitted, and have more and better features.
A couple of small examples: Except for a small number of their more expensive 1911's, Colt can't even be bothered to update their terrible, sharp edged, poorly fitted semi-beavertail that pinches and chafes your hand. I had one Colt who's slide stop notch was rapidly wearing to the point of not stopping the slide and locking it back. Some NIB Colt's look like they were assembled by a drunk 4 year old.
Colt is behind the times...Are they junk? No, but they're completely average. No better.
Kimber includes the features that people want, straight out of the box, no cuts or scrapes to your hands included...I've never seen a Kimber that looked like it was built by that drunk 4 year old.

What are the prices for a colt 1911 handgun? Turning 21 soon I like to go to the range. Where are some places I can look for new 1911 pistols either 5" barrel or 7". Any websites that list the prices? The easiest way to answer this question is... whatever you want to pay for one.
Back "in the day", the only way to get a really custom autoloader was to buy a stock 1911 and send it to a shop for some work. The ejection port was typically made wider, the feed ramp was smoothed and polished, springs were replaced, triggers were polished, hammers were bobbed/trimmed/replaced, and so on.
Now, most 1911s come with the majority of these features straight out of the box. You can pay excessive amounts of cash for super slick race guns, or reasonable amounts for reliable self-defense pistols. The possibilities are endless, and you should really do your research as to what you want. Start by deciding what the gun will be used for. Although you can always upgrade (again, the sky is pretty much the limit) if you decide you want more out of the gun, the easiest thing to do is start with what you want from the jump.
A lot of people are going to tell you that Kimber is the best, yada yada yada. Point of fact, they've had a lot of QC issues as of late and are IMO a risk. The higher price tag makes them a no-go in my book. I'd also steer clear of Norinco, for the same reason, although they are at least affordably priced. This is something you may call upon some day to save your life-- do you really want to leave it up to question? Rock Island Armory has some low cost, well manufactured 1911s and it's a good baseline pistol to start out with. When you start getting into the longer barrel/slides, you're looking at a more limited selection and higher price-- that's the nature of the beast.
Make sure you function test any ammo you'll be using for self defense-- I recommend at least 100 rounds. Find some good magazines (Chip McCormick's are nice), and get your butt out to the range. The 1911 has the most commonly known manual of arms on the planet (for a pistol), and it doesn't take a genius to "master" its function. As with any firearm-- practice, practice, practice.

If a simple 1911 is what you actually want I'd suggest you checkout Springfield Armory 1911's on the high end, and Rock Island Armory 1911's which are, somewhere, in the middle.

I have a Colt Python, NEW in the box, NEVER fired ... whats the BEST way to sell this classic pistol ? Whats the best and safest way to sell guns from my collection ? I am thinking "online" as my local gunshops won't offer me anything but LOW LOW prices as they want to make a BIG profit from reselling them. Ebay won't let me post handguns. Any other "online" websites allow the sale of firearms ? Thanks There is a conflict between the best (meaning most money) and safest (depending on meaning). Even if you sell it to a firearms dealer, you need to get a receipt since I have heard of cases where the firearm was not logged in and instead sold illegally.

The problem with auctions is that it is for a limited period of time and you need two or more people who are interested in it, otherwise the price does not go up.
The best way is to advertise the firearm on various firearms forums and email lists, but you need to determine the value of the firearm first. You can set a reserve for the auctions, but some places charge you even if it does not sell, it can get expensive.
Once you sell it, you need to make sure that the funds are good. There are numerous scams involving bogus cashier checks and money orders, often for amounts more than what you are selling it for. Then, you need to find a firearms dealer to sent it to, if the person is not local. In some states it is legal to sell a firearm directly to another person, but you need to protect yourself by getting information from the seller as you don't want them to use it in a crime and have the firearm traced back to you.
Unless there is a state law preventing it, you can ship a firearm yourself, but handguns can not be shipped USPS by non-FFLs and FedEx and UPS require expensive shipping, so it could be cheaper to have a FFL ship it, depending on rates. Before you ship it, you need to get a signed copy of the FFL, check the status on the BATF EZcheck web page (https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/) and make sure that you follow all shipping laws, such as requesting an adult signature, no markings on the box that it is a firearm, telling the shipper that it is a firearm, etc.
