Who still uses a Coleman fuel catalytic heater for camping? Does anyone still use a COLEMAN catalytic heater that burns Coleman Liquid fuel (not propane) for camping? Do you use it in a tent? How much ventilation do you provide in the tent? I'm a little worried about Carbon Monoxide if I use it in the tent. Liquid Coleman fuel; Heater, not a cooking stove. It has a catalytic dome that glows red and provides heat. I used it in a garage with a carbon monoxide detector and the detector registered zero. I know it uses up oxygen. Don't use this in a tent unless you have all the vents open to the tent. They are not very efficient heating devices in really cold weather in a tent. I've heard of several people who have died using those type of heaters in tents without adequate ventilation.
What i've done in the past is bought a gas powered generator and i used quartz radiant heaters when i was out camping in the mountains in the snow and sub zero temperatures.
These days i use a battery i removed from a bulldozer and use quartz heaters. Works really good for 2-3 days then i just hook up some cables to my truck battery start up and recharge the large battery for about 30 minutes every 2 or 3 days.

This IS an open flame. The propane burns on a wire screen.
That's too many BTU's in a tent-sized space. I have a Mr. Heater that is similar but it's a 12,000 BTU capacity and works well as long as you don't burn yourself or the tent (the head gets red-hot).
45,000 BTU is better suited to a 2-3 car garage space. What you show may be mis-labelled as to heating capacity.
Even 12,000 BTU is best used intermittently: Close the tent, heat it up, turn it off and go to bed. In the morning, turn it on for a bit to get dressed, turn it off. Otherwise it's still too much heat. There is NO thermostat on these units and the fire hazard or burn hazard is too great.

You need to have a lot of ventilation in you tent to keep from not ever waking up again. I have a small wood burning stove that has a stovepipe through the roof of the tent. Even with the tent door or window open it'll keep you warm. Depends on how much you want to carry or spend. It would be unrealistic to believe that any solar powered or battery powered resistance heater would. You would need a bank of batteries that would fill a truck to heat for just one day. You can also heat large rocks in a fire, wrap them in towels or blankets and use them to heat your tent. You'd need 2 sets, one for in the tent and another set in the fire to rotate when the first set gets cold.

Thanks a bunch!! The normal alternative to propane in camping is white gas (name in US at least) which has the great advantage over propane of not requiring a heavy container to contain the pressure. It has a lot of Btuh's in liquid form and can be carried in a thin metal container (or some plastic containers) Many stoves and heaters are available that run on white gas/Colman fuel/camping fuel.
But the real answer is to not try to heat a space that is separated from the cold by a thin layer of nylon or canvas. Instead, put your money into properly rated sleeping bags and clothing to match the temperatures you will encounter and use the tent to keep off the wind and rain.

COLD sleeping bags.....Any opinions???? WINTER CAMPING? ok, well im planning on doing some winter camping/ice fishing this year in northern wisconsin. I will have a large portable ice shanty and heater . but what would be the best sleeping bag i could buy for these types of temperatures. It gets below zero in january but in december im expecting it to only be in the teens on average. I found a nice Coleman square sleeping bag at Fleet Farm rated -5 degrees. $59.99 but does this mean it is comfortable in -5 degree cold? the chart on the box seemed a bit misguiding saying that the comfort temp was 20-30 i think. and below that was dangerous/extreme cold. ???? I know ill have a shanty and heater but i dont want to rely solely on that. anyone have any good suggestions for sleeping bags under $80??? thanks My spouse and I love to winter camp, but just say no to Coleman for anything other than stoves and lanterns. I would suggest that you go to backpacker.com and check out their rated gear for 2007. Every brand is different, so, even if the bag is rated to -5, it might run cold, or it might run hot. But the guys and gals at backpacker field test EVERYTHING and the feedback is excellent. Plus, their magazine is essential reading for anyone into the outdoors - they have all kinds of cool stuff!

Is the Coleman SPORT CAT portable propane heater approved for tent use? I purchased a SPORT CAT but do not know whether it is just for outdoor use, for example at sporting events, etc. or whether I can use it to heat a tent as well when camping. I am very nervous about using any propane powered piece of camping equipment other than outside the tent in a very well ventilated area for obvious reasons (possible flame setting things a fire and carbon monoxide build up) and I would never use any piece of equipment that has on open flame in a enclosed area for those reasons anyway. However, the SPORT CAT has a protected, meshed metal top that prevents open flame and diffuses the heat. My tent has quite a large amount of mesh screening which is covered by a rain fly, but there is also quite a large amount of space (several inches) between the rain fly and the mesh, supposedly allowing for good ventilation. Would this amount of ventilation be adequate to use the heater inside the tent for cooler nights without risking build up of carbon monoxide? Has anyone ever used one inside a tent when camping? I'm just a little nervous to try it without asking these questions first. Thanks for your help! You need to carefully read the the CERTIFIED manufacturer's operating instructions for that heater and follow them to the letter. I have attached a link to a "sport cat" heater from coleman's website. I don't know if this is the exact model you have or not.

It does not specifically say whether you can use it inside a tent or not. IT DOES talk about clearance from combustibles, not sleeping in an area were this heater is operating, providing adequate ventilation. You need to make sure you meet ALL of the requirements. The ventilation provided must be uninterrupted. In other words you cannot rely on an open window because a passerby might close that window. A tent flap could be tied shut cutting off your fresh air supply.
They are not saying you CAN use it in a tent, but they are sure hinting that you shouldn't!
You need to remember that even though it is a catalytic style burner with no open flame, it is still burning propane. And if it does not have sufficient fresh air you will be producing carbon monoxide.
I'll tell you this much...I've worked around propane and propane burning equipment for 22 years. I would never operate anything like that in a tent. Heater, lantern, cooker...none of them. Use battery operated lights and an extra blanket!
If you do not follow those operating instructions to the letter, and anyone is hurt by this thing, the manufacturer will take no responsibility because it has been used in a manner "other than what it was intended". Insurance companies would deny any personal injury or property damage claims for the same reason.
Edit: Scott...I followed your link to that tent heater. It's looks like a great idea, however if you follow the link on that page to the manufacturer's website( not the retailer ) it shows as no longer available. That raises an eyebrow!
You have to be very careful with retail sellers. They sometimes make claims that are not necessarily what the manufacturer supports. A perfect example of this is http://www.colemanheaters.com They are not what you would expect, which is the manufacturer of the well known "coleman" camping equipment. Well they are not! They are a retailer!

It's the old "buyer beware" thing... If there was ever a court case, it would be the manufacturer's instructions that would be considered correct, not what the retailer claimed it was OK to do.

How long does a coleman mini propane tank run for? If you use it all in one run how many hours would it last? It's one of those camping heaters if you need more detail.. A couple of hours, maybe longer if the heater isn't running full blast.
Note that you can get an adapter hose that will allow you to attach a regular 20 lb. BBQ type LPG tank to your heater's "throw away cylinder" thread. Check "Mr. Heater" products.
