1. How far was the lighthouse from the shoreline when it was built in 1870? I have this essay and some questions about it, i've answered them all and i just want to check my answers. I will post the other in a min. [The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina. The 60-meter (208 feet) high structure is the tallest lighthouse in the United States, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And here is the other 2 Questions: 2.How far was the lighthouse from the shoreline in 1935 when the first significant steps were taken to try to protect the coastline against erosion? 3.What was the approximate rate of erosion for Cape Hatteras in the first 65 years after the lighthouse was constructed? This reflects the natural erosion rate for this part of the Outer Banks before the impact of man-made structures. Ever since the completion of the new tower in 1870, there had begun a very gradual encroachment of the sea upon the beach. This did not become serious, however, until 1919, when the high water line had advanced to about 300 feet from the base of the tower. Since that time the surf had gnawed steadily toward the base of the tower until in 1935, the site was finally reached by the surf. Several attempts were made to arrest this erosion, but dikes and breakwaters had been of no avail. In 1935, therefore, the tower light was replaced by a light on a skeleton steel tower placed farther back from the sea on a sand dune, 166 feet above the sea, and visible for 19 miles. The old tower was then abandoned to the custody of the National Park Service.
1999: The lighthouse was moved 2870 feet from its original location, placing it 3000 feet from the Atlantic Ocean.

You can get a checking account with us at 16, but you have to have a parent or guardian on the account with you, at least until you are 17. You can deposit and withdraw as much as you like with the checking account, and you can also get a debit card. Once you turn 17, you and who ever else was on the account with you, can both sign to take their name off the account, or you can open a completely separate account. The only road to recovery may be to declare 40 percent of the world's oceans off-limits to human exploitation to ensure the restoration of life in depleted areas. Seventy percent of the Earth's surface is covered by ocean, and three-quarters of the population live in coastal areas. We are all dependent on marine resources - yet our oceans are facing threats that include overfishing, toxic pollution, climate change and whaling. A new report from the prestigious Worldwatch Institute, Oceans in Peril: Protecting Marine Biodiversity, calls for these marine reserves - areas where all extractive and destructive activities, including fishing are prohibited - while giving an alarming snapshot of the shocking state of the world's oceans. It's a wake-up call that should jolt the complacency of policy makers worldwide. Oceans in Peril details new and emerging threats, such the increasing acidification of the world's oceans, and underscores how the race for ever-diminishing resources is forcing marine ecosystems to the point of collapse. The report illustrates how 76 percent of the world's fish stocks are fully or overexploited, an estimate borne out by figures from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which suggest that 158 million tons of fish were harvested worldwide in 2005 - a seven-fold increase since 1950. Catch records between 1950 and 2000 show the "collapse" of 366 out 1,519 fisheries worldwide, most famously the Grand Banks cod fishery off Newfoundland. ©Greenpeace/Grace Orange Roughy and bycatch in the Tasman Sea Oceans in Peril also details the pitfalls of fish farming, the supposed magic bullet of marine resources with alarming statistics: producing carnivorous animals such as salmon or marine shrimp requires 2.5 as much fishmeal as the amount of saleable fish eventually produced. For tuna caught in the wild and fattened in "ranches", the weight of fish fed to the tuna is a shocking 20 times more than what is actually produced. The damage to thousands of marine animals and entire ecosystems by longlining and bottom trawling, as well as overfishing off the coast of developing countries, is made even worse by the estimated 20 percent of the global catch that is illegal, unregulated or unreported. This illegal catch is worth somewhere between $4-9 billion a year. That solution is the establishment of comprehensive marine reserves all over the world, protecting vulnerable species and habitats, enhancing fisheries beyond the reserve boundaries, and buffering the worst impacts of climate change. Marine reserves are the single most powerful tool available for arresting and reversing the decline of our oceans and are equally applicable to the high seas as they are to coastal waters. A 1980 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memorandum defines “essential” government services and “essential” employees as those: (1) providing for the national security, including the conduct of foreign relations essential to the national security or the safety of life and property; (2) providing for benefit payments and the performance of contract obligations under no-year or multi-year or other funds remaining available for those purposes; (3) conducting essential activities to the extent that they protect life and property, including: (4) medical care of inpatients and emergency outpatient care; (5) activities essential to ensure continued public health and safety, including safe use of food, drugs, and hazardous materials; (6) continuance of air traffic control and other transportation safety functions and the protection of transport property; (7) border and coastal protection and surveillance; protection of federal lands, buildings, waterways, equipment and other property owned by the United States; (8) care of prisoners and other persons in the custody of the United States; law enforcement and criminal investigations; (9) emergency and disaster assistance; activities that ensure production of power and maintenance of the power distribution system; (10) activities essential to the preservation of the essential elements of the money and banking system of the United States, including borrowing and tax collection activities of the Treasury; and (11) activities necessary to maintain protection of research property.
